BXgreenhorn - 6/23/2012 1:48 PM I have a large airtight tupperdor, that has been preserving my cigars very well. I recently heard that you can't properly age cigars in a tupperdor. Is this true? Should I invest in a large humidor to properly age my stogies?

Aging cigars in humidors that are made of wood is my first pick as far as equipment...but aging refers to 5 years and over.  Resting cigars is basically anything less than 5 years and not many of us will choose to age cigar that long even though I do have a few humidors that have cigars older than 5 years.

Tupperware is a great product and when used correctly will take care of your cigars as well as anything out there.  I usually buy tupperware that is large enough to hold at least 200 cigars and I either take old cigar boxes and put them inside the tupperware or I line the bottom of the tupperware with cedar sheets.  There are a number of things that you can put KL in...but the more surface area that you can expose of the KL ....the better.  I bought a dozen of the rectangle plastic humis and took the floral foam out...and put KL in there instead.  Just one large rectangle with KL will take care of about 200 cigars.  Don't spray with DW until you get a base reading inside...once you get a reading then spritz 2 times for each percentage you want to move up percentage wise...if it gets to high then add more KL or take half out and refill with fresh KL.

Thanks for the great advice, I guess my tupperdors are good for now. I'll put my pennies away and pick up a Cabinet in a couple of years.

Yeah, im just tryin to look at all my options. The igloo at Sams was only $70, the cheapest i found, and there werent any really cheap deals for small fridges on craigslist. Plus i thought it was funny/cool that she was all for it. I thought for sure id get some pushback on space lol. Another of my issues is that all we have is a lil car so i cant pickup anything too big. like i saw some dirt cheap full size fridges on craigslist, but i cant pick em up.

When I run by Walmart I check the cooleradors...same with Sams or Costco and sometimes you get them for cheap. I have one I bought a couple years ago...it's a monster and I got it for around $80...big enough to put a body in. These are great to store boxes in for a year or two and I keep it in the MB closet...67RH and 70 temperature wise. I love KL when it comes to these storage containers...it keeps my stuff right at 67% for months but I still check it...it's on OCD thing.

Also, If i like it alot and decide to use it in my smaller humis, how the heck do ya open up the credos with the mesh screens. The buggers seem to be locked tight.

I actually can answer this, since I put Heartfelt beads in my regular humidor. Mine were glued shut in 1-2 spots. I flipped them over to get to the back and ran an exacto knife around it, which didn't seem to work. Eventually I got it apart by using some tooth picks to keep most of the edges away from one another until I found the corner that was glued and giving my difficulty. Then I just applied some leverage and it came apart.

All of these guys have great info and here is another storage unit you could try. I have a storage unit that is hermatic and the cost is cheap. Its used to seal files from moisture and its size is approx 30 inches by 24 inches. I don`t know if you have them in the states but my gues is yes....they have a seal around the edge and 6 handles clamp it shut and they are see through so you read meters and check conditions without opening if you wish. I use 6 of them plus the other humi stuff I have.

The short answer is no, you can't really age cigars (long term as Gary said 5+ years) in plastic nearly as well as in spanish cedar lined wood humidors. Has to do with permeability and cigars being able to "breath." But fore shorter term "resting" (per Gary's explanation above) plastic Tupperware-like boxes are fine. Just open 'em up for a minute or two every couple days or so.

A friend of mine uses a case like this for some of his cigars too. He got it at Staples for cheap.

Those rectangular hygros with the floral foam inside can be a PIA to get apart but I saw a guy on U Tube get inside of them...it's very easy now.  You need a good solid knife blade and score around the edges to break apart the glue they use...once you score the outside then use the blade on the short side of the hygro and lift up until you see it break the seal...then do the same with the other side...after a couple of times you can then lift it off...remove the foam and fill with KL...don't overfill or you won't be able to close the top over it..leave about 1/8 of an inch so you can put the top over it.  I keep the mesh screen over the KL and just spritz when I need to...it works perfectly.
