Pass Moderator Eligibility Rules

Curious what everyone's thoughts are on this topic.

- Should there be eligibility standards in place for pass moderators?

- If so, what should they be?

Let me start by saying, this is not directed to any 1 person or pass by any means. The first CG pass I ever participated in had to be closed down midway by an admin due to the absolute chaos it created (Stefan's Unconventional Pass - for you oldies).

I bring this up because the one common thread I see among all passes that incur these unnecessary issues is simply the moderators' pure lack of experience. As a community, I feel that we can do more to not only guide members that show interest in moderating, but also to help curb the unnecessary distractions that take away the fun of a well run pass. To that end, here is my proposal -

Box Pass Moderator Eligibility:

- Has participated in a min of 3 passes

- First Moderated pass must be accompanied by a Veteran Moderator. (Veteran Mod - anyone that has moderated a min of 3 passes)

Thoughts?

It might be hard to get someone who has been in 3 passes and someone who has moderated 3 passes to work together.

Interesting proposition.  My $0.02:

Passes are fewer and further between around here so it seems like too high of a standard, might take someone 3 years to qualify.  I do agree it makes sense that you should be part of at least 1 so you get an idea of how it should be run.  I think we can all agree Stefan's pass was a rare exception.  I went back and looked and I moderated my first pass within 3 months of joining the group.  I don't know HOW I pulled that off except the geeks here gave me the benefit of the doubt (and maybe liked my pass idea) and I watched how the veterans (like longhorn) handled things and tried to follow suit.  I think I participated in maybe 1 by that time?  The pass went fine.

I think maybe a certain feedback standard might make sense?  It will encourage interaction so people get to know and have some confidence in the potential moderator before starting a pass.  Again, I wouldn't put the feedback standard at some level that takes forever to attain...

I think it would be better to just require defined criteria on how to run a pass.  I suggest copy-pasting the rules from www.cigarpass.com.

We have similar CG defined criteria that goes into more detail than that:
http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=16
http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=15

And we have a good article on Cigar Pass Etiquette (including the Cuban issue):
http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=37

All of this, and much MUCH more, can be found under the Articles tab in the left column.   Maybe we should rename the Articles the CigarGeeks Handbook and make everyone on the site sign off once a year that they've read it all and understand it (like your HR dept makes you do!).  Things would go much smoother around here, especially for admins!

Can't argue with you there. The rules are clear and they should be read!

But nothing beats experience in my opinion. Even after reading the driver's manual first, I still had a trainer sit next to me for a time. No shame in passing down knowledge.

Would we have more passes if they were run differently? who knows

I would agree that it should be "recommended" that anyone wanting to start a pass should participate in at least one, but certainly not a requirement.  As has been stated above there are plenty of guides for running a pass and hundreds of past passes to be referenced.

But also those who are site FOGs and veterans of past passes also have a responsibility.  If you are considering joining a pass and you feel the pass rules are missing somethings that you feel are required, then speak up.  Contact the moderator, get you concerns addressed.  if you are still uncomfortable,  then don't join.

I love passes, pretty sure I am going to start one after the current one is completed! Beauty and the beast with high end and budget? Ren & Stimpy with thick and thin? Or even better, Perfect pairings with booze samples and coffee, just gets a little heavier! I would welcome any assistance in mainly getting it set up.

I gotta say, that's a great idea!
