This cigar was enjoyed with Water

Pre-Light: 17 Points of 20 Possible

The cigar had a very nice dark sheen too it. It had a few fairly prominent veins but nothing that would detract from its appearance. It also had a nice solid heft in the hand. I enjoyed the look of the cigar very much from an aesthetic point of view. When I cut it it did not cut cleanly, and this was odd considering it was a brand new Colibri cutter I was using, so I know it was razor sharp. Cleaned it a bit and no big deal. Pre-light draw was mild and earthy.

Light & Burn: 12 Points of 15 Possible

The stick lit with no problems whatsoever. Lit evenly and cleanly. It also had a bit of a tight draw and did not produce a lot of smoke. The dark grey ash fell after less than an inch which seemed off. In its defense, it did leave a nice perfect cone. Burned nice and slowly and took almost 1 and 3/4 hours to smoke, and I tend to smoke quickly.

Construction: 22 Points of 30 Possible

Construction was solid with no soft spots and looked nice. Has a well built wrapper and cap but the 1st half draw was a bit tight. The 2nd half opened up nicely, which I really enjoy. I love a lot of smoke production. It would have rated higher if it hadn't taken so long to get there.

Flavor: 25 Points of 35 Possible

Initial draw offered a very mild earthy creaminess with no pepper or sweetness. To be honest, I expected a more robust flavor from such a hefty dark cigar. It wasn't unpleasant, just sort of uneventful. There still wasn't a discernable flavor change: smooth and creamy, but uneventful. At about 2/12 inches left I noticed a slight bitterness at the back of my tongue, nothing unpleasant and actually a bit of a welcome change.

Summary

I smoked this while drinking water and I think that this would benefit with the addition of a nice adult beverage. I received one of these in a smaller vitola in the Rookie Robusto pass and look forward to giving it a try. All in all, I give it a solid 3 but could see it easily improving with the right accoutrement.
