Pre-Light: 19 Points of 20 Possible
Very good looking cigar. Smooth to the touch, few veins, nice aroma from the foot. The Oval shape is cool as hell! As I'm studying this smoke my anticipation begins to build. AJ did a good job with the overall branding, and appearance of this cigar.
Light & Burn: 12 Points of 15 Possible
The burn stayed pretty sharp the entire cigar. I had to make only one correction throughout the smoke. The ash was good, but not great. However, I have to deduct a few points, because it began to tunnel and inexplicably went out about halfway into the final third.
Construction: 28 Points of 30 Possible
You could tell the cigar was made with care. No major construction issues. The cap clipped easily, and the wrapper didn't consider unraveling. Which is pretty impressive considering this Oval shape can't be easy to roll.
Flavor: 25 Points of 35 Possible
First Third: Unfortunately the most important part of the smoking experience is where this cigar just did not do well, taste. I lit it with a single flame torch, and was immediately met with a blast of bitterness. Unperturbed, as that is often the case, I smoked on. The bitterness dissipated in 3 or 4 puffs leaving a very bland subtle tobacco taste behind. No spice whatsoever, even on the retrohale.
Second Third: The spice began to pick up on the retrohale in the second, but not very much, while the cigar remained constant. Distant nutty, and earthy flavors would fade in and out, while a distinct ammonia flavor took center stage.
Final Third: As I neared the band, the ammonia flavor was becoming a little overwhelming, and the spice continued to build, unfortunately so did the harshness. The cigar went out mid way through the final third, and I couldn't bring myself to relight it. Overall, I was very disappointed as I had some high hopes.
Summary
My initial post smoke thought about this cigar is it must be very young. I know that Wayne got them from AJ himself, so I tend to believe that he may have grabbed them off a very recent production. I really wanted to like this cigar. As I said the shape, the look, and even the odor was pleasing, but the smoke itself was not. I will give these another chance in the future when I feel like I've got one that's "ready", but I'm in no hurry.
