Title: home roasted coffee
Post by: kennyg on 03/12/2011 12:32 PM
So last summer I tried roasting my own coffee at home, and since then I have consumed coffee from more countries around the world then Hillary Clinton has visited since taking office !!!

The most suprising thing I came across was the Decaf coffees that are out there. My home roasted decaf coffee is the best I have ever had.

Anyone else roast their own coffees ??? I would love to share tips and learnings

I don't roast my own, but I am curious about the decaf and how they decaffeinate the beans. I've heard they use chemicals to do it. I also heard that there is really only a couple percent difference in the amount of caffeine compared to "normal" beans.

A pox on decaf coffee, light beer, low-fat, low-sugar, no-sugar, half-sugar, "new and improved" anything, low cal salad dressing, diet anything (except Diet Pepsi), low cholesterol anything, or any other consumable which has had its natural qualities and/or quantities of consumable goodiness artificially manipulated.

Good question, there are actualy 3 ways to decafinate beans.

1. Chemical bath
2. Water bath
3. carbonated water bath

All 3 types of processes remove between 85 and 96 percent of the caffeine from what I have read. So you would have to drink 10 to 15 cups of decaf to equal 1 cup of regular coffee to get the same amount of caffeine.

The decaf coffee's I roast are water processed, they don't use chemicals to take the caffeine out. That's one reason these beans have more flavor. The water process is slower, so it costs more to decaffeinate beans that way....but there is a big taste difference I think.

I dont know much about coffee, but I tried to dry some weed in the microwave when I was a teenager.

That didnt work so well...

Mom came home and asked "what the hell is that nasty smell"

I have a feeling that wasn't Bob's dumbest moment but it's got to be up there.

As for the coffee and original post; the only coffee I drink is some Columbian blend we get at work, and the Foldgers that's in my fridge at home. I'm not much of a coffee guy, so I drink it to keep me awake. No decaf for me thank you.

I totally forgot to comment on the original post.  I was thumbing through the coffee geek page and was looking into the home roasting techniques and whatnot.  Don't know if I'll try it or not, but seemed like a lot of info on the page and youtube.

I'm not a fan of decaf either, but couldn't say if I've ever had any where the caffeine reduction was not chemically induced.

Most decaf coffee sucks! It would be great to find one that actually tastes good!

Nick, do you buy ground coffee or whole beans ?

I had a great little local shop that I have bought whole beans from for years.  Recently they went under, thanks to Starbucks.     I am looking for some place to buy from or order from that isn't Starbucks.  Starbucks is much to bitter for me.  I like strong OK but not bitter.  That being said I do not think that I am ready or have the time to roast my own.

Whole bean for me. I love it ground just before I make a pot.

Kenny, will you be getting yourself a burro and touring the country? Providing delicious cups of coffee to the masses?
