Thanks to Otis for this one! I thought overall this was a good medium to med/full smoke. I love the look of a marbled wrapper and the added visual of the “wick” off the cap was cool. The flavor... Read More

I had never had a cigar by this manufacturer and was interested to try this out. I wanted to like this stick, gave it a chance, but the flavors and lack of complexity just didn't do it for me. T... Read More

Xikar HC Series Blue Barber Pole Toro
By: tuck0411 (Today at 03:52 PM)
Humidor time: 119 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 71, foot - 68 Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, and a moderately firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a double shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately tight. (8/10) Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of tobacco. The light gave a medium/full profile with a spicy retro and notes of rich wood, coffee, and spice. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note but this was quite flavorful with plenty of spice in the mix to keep things interesting throughout. Strength was about medium. (30/35) Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately tight draw, smoke volume below optimal, and an even burn to start. The burn got wavy, then lopsided through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/2" on the low side of the burn line. Post-ashing, I gave it a touch-up as it showed no signs of self-correction. The burn continued wavily but self-correcting through the 2nd third and things were otherwise uneventful down to the nub. Draw and smoke output reached the low side of optimal part way through the 2nd third but never reached fully optimal before reaching the nub. (10/20) Overall impression: This one came in a five-pack from C-bid awhile back. Unfortunately, it was a bit tightly packed resulting in the aforementioned reduced draw and smoke output all the way through. Flavors were nice, so I'll update this review should the remaining sticks perform any better. (25/35) Burn time: 1:95 Rating: 73
Punch Knuckle Buster Shade Robusto
By: ElCid1986 (Today at 12:47 PM)
I do not smoke enough of Punchs portfolio and say that after I enjoy another of the line. This was a very solid Connecticut Shade cigar. Hints of bread and light roast coffee. White pepper spice helps give this a medium flavor profile so definately not a bland connie. Construction was impeccable with smooth draw and combustion. A consistent and tasty cigar.

Humidor time: 118 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 71, foot - 70 Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, and a moderately firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10) Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of tobacco. The light gave a medium-bodied profile with a spicy retro and notes of wood, spice, and hints of butter and citrus. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note but this was quite flavorful with plenty of spice and more body than one normally gets from a conny-wrappered stick. Strength was about medium or a bit better. (31/35) Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn was even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a small cone. The burn continued wavily into the 2nd third and the stick tried to tunnel and go out at one point but I managed to keep it going until it recovered and the burn evened out again. Things were then uneventful down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining optimal except during the brief tunneling episode. It was a slow-burning smoke, clocking in past 2 hours from light to nub. (18/20) Overall impression: This one came in a five-pack from C-bid awhile back and this was the 2nd vitola I've had from this blend, the churchill being the first. My review of that one was over five years ago and doesn't really resemble what I'm reporting here other than the butter hint but my palate has probably changed in the meantime. Pretty nice morning smoke, in any case, albeit a bit stronger than your average conny stick but it's got Mexican leaf in the filler and a Sumatra binder, so that probably has something to do with the increased strength. Definitely tasty, though, and pretty good construction so I'll enjoy smoking up the rest of this five-pack. (30/35) Burn time: 2:03 Rating: 87
Byron Serie Siglo XXI Elegantes
By: olea111 (12/01/2024 07:05 PM)
This is the best cigar I have had to date. It starts out with honeysuckle and citrus, progresses to butter and parmesan reggiano, then brioche and finishes with allspice, and dark chocolate. Smoking this cigar was like the first time I tasted a very serious wine, or very serious whiskey.

Pretty classic, very well made Connecticut wrapped Dominican. Mild, creamy, buttery, honey throughout. I found it to be reminiscent of some of my favorite of this type, Perdomo Champagne, Room 101 Tobacconaut, but at an even lower price point than those, which are both good value.

By: olea111 (12/01/2024 04:21 PM)
Part of the Cigar Authority contenders pack for their cigar of the year. The construction, ash and burn was great. Started out nutty and with a tiny bit of coffee, and cocoa, dry dry dry San Andres for sure. remained consistent until the final third when some eucalyptus and dark chocolate/cayenne came out. Super nutty, and toasted oak were main notes. Overall was pretty boring for middle, but not bad

Humidor time: 117 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 66, foot - 70 Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, and a moderately firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10) Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of tobacco. The light gave a medium/full profile with a spicy retro and notes of rich wood, coffee, spice, and a strong hint of citrus. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note but this was very rich and flavorful with a juicy citrus aspect that made it very enjoyable. Strength was about medium or a bit better. (33/35) Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a cone. Things continued uneventfully through the 2nd third followed by a wrapper split developing in the last third but this didn't impact smokeability before reaching the nub. Draw and smoke output remained optimal throughout. (19/20) Overall impression: This one came in a five-pack from C-bid awhile back and this was the 2nd vitola I've had from this blend, the robusto being the first. My review of that one was from over five years ago and doesn't bear much resemblance, flavor-wise, to this one, but that's probably mostly due to my palate changing in the meantime. It appears I enjoyed this one quite a bit more than the robusto, though, and I'm now looking forward to smoking up the rest of this five-pack with the usual reckless abandon and will likely get more. Great smoke! (32/35) Burn time: 1:38 Rating: 92
Man O' War (Original blend) Double Corona

Humidor time: 116 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 63, foot - 50 Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, and a moderately firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a double shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10) Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of tobacco. The light gave a medium/full profile with a spicy retro and notes of rich wood, coffee, leather, and spice. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note but this was very rich and flavorful with plenty of spice in the mix to keep things interesting throughout. Strength was about medium. (32/35) Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately easy draw, smoke volume on the low side of optimal, and an even burn to start. Smoke output quickly improved and reached fully optimal about a half inch in to the first third. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a cone. The burn continued a bit wavily but self-correcting through the 2nd third and things were otherwise uneventful down to the nub. Draw and smoke output remained mostly optimal from the first third on. (18/20) Overall impression: This one came in a five-pack from C-bid awhile back and this was the fifth vitola I've had from this blend. Back when I was doing a lot more buying from CI and C-bid than I've done up to now, I somehow missed this particular vitola... My reviews of the other vitolas report that I was getting black pepper in all of those and a chocolate hint in a few of them with leather being common between those and this one. If black pepper was present in this one, my palate didn't notice it, or any chocolate. Suspect that's just my palate changing over time... Great smoke, in any case, and one of my favorite AJ blends, which I plan to smoke lots more of going forward. (31/35) Burn time: 1:37 Rating: 89
La Gloria Cubana Serie R Black No. 48
By: tuck0411 (11/29/2024 05:20 PM)
Humidor time: 115 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 64, foot - 60 Appearance and construction: A few minor veins, a light sheen, box-pressed, and a moderately soft pack with no soft spots... Gave it a double shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (9/10) Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of rich tobacco. The light gave a full-bodied profile with a spicy retro and notes of charred wood, black coffee, black pepper, leather, and spice. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors mellowing through the first third and the body receding towards medium/full where it stayed through the remainder. Very rich and flavorful, overall, with plenty of that Nicaraguan spiciness that always tingles my taste-buds. Strength was about medium or a bit better. (32/35) Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately easy draw, smoke volume on the low side of optimal, and an even burn to start. Smoke volume quickly improved and reached optimal shortly into the first third. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a cone. The burn continued slightly wavy but self-correcting through the remainder and down to the nub. Draw and smoke output remained optimal from the first third on. (19/20) Overall impression: This one came in a five-pack from C-bid awhile back and this was the third vitola I've had from this blend, the No. 58 and the No. 60 being the first two. It'd been over four years since I reviewed either of those so I had to go back and re-read my reviews of them, neither of which bear much resemblance to the flavors I'm reporting here, but I'm guessing that's mostly due to my palate changing as the overall experience was definitely reminiscent of what I vaguely remember from those sticks. At any rate, it's a very nice, fuller-bodied smoke and full of that spicy Nicaraguan goodness I always enjoy and I'll be looking forward to smoking up the rest of this five pack and will likely get more when these are gone. (32/35) Burn time: 1:43 Rating: 92
Nica Libre Estopilla Double Toro
By: tuck0411 (11/28/2024 04:07 PM)
Humidor time: 114 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 57, foot - 44 Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, and a moderately firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a double shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10) Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of tobacco. The light gave a medium+ profile with a slightly spicy retro and notes of wood, spice, mint, and a hint of coffee. The spice in the nose faded quickly with the other flavors staying consistent through the first half after which the flavors intensified a bit with the body increasing to medium/full by the last third. Very tasty, overall, with just enough spice in the mix to keep things interesting and an overall sense of quality tobacco being present. Strength was about medium. (32/35) Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately easy draw, smoke volume on the low side of optimal, and a wavy burn to start. The burn evened out through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a cone. Smoke volume was improving by this point and reached fully optimal immediately following the first ashing. Things were then uneventful down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining optimal from the 2nd third on. (18/20) Overall impression: This one came in a five-pack from C-bid awhile back and was the first vitola I've had from this blend. It's a Nicaraguan puro with a corojo wrapper and a tasty blend it is with pretty decent construction so I'll be looking forward to smoking up the rest of this fiver and may have to get some more. (31/35) Burn time: 1:23 Rating: 89 |
