Frank opened a cigar box. Cuban Cohibas. He pressed one with his index finger and shook his head. "Guy spends four, five hundred bucks a box but doesn't know enough to put them in a humidor." He sighed, thinking about the hours of good smoking shot to hell. - Robert Andrews, from his novel, A Murder of Honor

Very smooth from the first combustion. Cameroon wrapper notes of coffee and spice. Light taste of leather. Overall construction is solid and draw perfect. I waited until I have smoked at least 3 of these to review and all have been consistently good. Have more in humidor to see if age makes it even smoother.

This is the Maduro version of the Tyrannical Buc from JSK. I thoroughly enjoyed the Connecticut version I had previously, but unfortunately this cigar was subpar. Had burn issues from first light although it showed at 62% humidity level prelight. The draw was decent, but smoke output was lacking. The taste of charred wood was the major note with no usual broadleaf notes. I gave up on it with a 1/3 left. I have 5 more and will let these sit for 3-6 months to see if they improve.

This cigar comes from a company headed by a very interesting guy named Riste Ristevski. This cigar is a very nice looking Connecticut shade toro. Upon first light it gives off a very smooth and buttery flavor profile with thick chewy smoke. This is not a bland stick and has white pepper spice mixed in. The construction was absolutely perfect and I only had to relight due to lack of attention when I took a phone call. I normally do not nub cigars as they get too hot, but made an exception with this one. These came from CP and they look like they are sold out. I did seee they will be restocked with JSK cigars next month and I will definately purchase more.

Humidor time: 104 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 64, foot - 60 Appearance and construction: A few minor veins, a light sheen, a pig-tail cap, a closed foot, and a moderately firm pack with no soft spots... The pig-tail came off in the celo so I gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10) Flavor: PLA gave a faint whiff of tobacco. The light gave a full-bodied profile with a spicy retro and notes of black coffee, black pepper, leather, and spice. The spice in then nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note but this was very rich and flavorful with just enough spice in the mix to keep things interesting throughout. Strength was about medium. (32/35) ![]() Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a small cone. Things were then uneventful down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining optimal throughout. (20/20) Overall impression: This one came as a single from Cigar Page awhile back when they were having a sale. A very good Nicaraguan puro on the fuller end of the flavor spectrum with both flavors and construction getting the job done in fine style. I'd definitely smoke it again. 32/35) Burn time: 1:42 Rating: 92

I love the Salamone vitola so took a chance on these on sale on CP. Decent Connecticut flavor profile with a smooth buttery quality to the smoke. Floral spice added a little zest. After that it is really a basic ride. Construction was very good and the size makes it a nice long journey. I dont think I will buy more, but will enjoy the rest of what I did purchase.

Humidor time: 103 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 66, foot - 50 Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, a half inch shaggy foot, and a firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a double shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10) Flavor: PLA gave a faint whiff of tobacco. The light gave a medium/full profile with a spicy retro and notes of coffee, spice, and a hint of wood. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. No particular change was noted when it burned past the shaggy foot and into the wrapper. No transitions to note but this was quite flavorful with just enough spice in the mix to keep things interesting throughout. Strength was about medium. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a cone. The burn was a bit wavy but self-correcting through the 2nd third, then it got lopsided going into the last third and a touch-up was needed before reaching the nub. Draw and smoke output remained optimal throughout. (17/20) Overall impression: This one came in a "shaggy" Raymond Pages sampler from Cigar Page awhile back and this was the sixth vitola I've had from this blend. My reviews of the others show a somewhat similar experience, flavor-wise, but I was getting a citrus note or hint in most of those that I didn't get from this one. At any rate, this was a pretty good smoke with nice flavors and slightly imperfect construction and I'd smoke it again. (30/35) Burn time: 1:44 Rating: 86

Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10) Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of rich tobacco. The light gave a medium+ profile with a spicy retro and notes of rich wood, spice, and a hint of coffee. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note but this was quite flavorful if not quite within my wheelhouse as it was just a bit too woody for my taste. Strength was about medium or a bit better. Pretty good habano smoke, although not quite perfect for either flavor or construction. Two more singles of different blends from this brand to go so we'll see how those do. Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was open. (8/10) Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of mild tobacco. The light gave a mild/medium profile with a spicy retro and notes of light wood, grass, spice, and a hint of cream. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. (31/35) ![]() Smoking characteristics: The light produced an easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling past 1" leaving a small cone. Things were then uneventful down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining optimal throughout. It was a fast-burning stick for its size, clocking in at just past one hour from light to nub. (20/20) Overall impression: This one came from Cigar Page when they were having a singles sale awhile back. This was the fifth vitola I've had from this blend, which used to be my favorite conny blend for quite awhile until I discovered other, slightly more tasty blends. This one was very similar to what I remember from smoking the other vitolas and it's a little unique in that I get a grassy note from this one vs. the more citrus-like note I get from my other favorite blends. It's a subtle difference, but noticeable enough to stand out. A good smoke, at any rate, and one I'd gladly smoke again. (31/35) Burn time: 1:01 Rating: 90 |
