| Humidor time: 124 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 68, foot - 59 Appearance and construction: A few minor veins, a light sheen, box-pressed, and a soft pack with no soft spots... Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10) Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of tobacco. The light gave a medium/full profile with a spicy retro and notes of rich wood, coffee, spice, and a hint of citrus. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note but this was very rich and flavorful with just enough spice and that citrus hint to keep things interesting throughout. Strength was about medium or a bit better. (32/35)  Smoking characteristics: The light produced an easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a small cone. The burn continued slightly wavily but self-correcting through the remainder and things were otherwise uneventful down to the nub. It was a fast-burning stick for its size, clocking in at well under an hour from light to nub. (19/20) Overall impression: This one came in a five-pack from C-bid awhile back. Very tasty smoke and I like it better than the NL core line, which is a pretty good blend in its own right. I'll enjoy smoking up the rest of this five-pack and may have to get some more. | Good looking wrapper leaf, dark with a slight sheen and very little veining. Nice sweet tobacco aroma at the foot prelight. Cap looks good and cuts well with a good draw. Fires up without issue and pepper is the first thing I notice but a puff or two and a tobacco along with a toasted malt joins in and the finish is slightly sweet and medium in duration. About a half inch in a creamy vanilla joins in. Really enjoyable start. Espresso opens the second third with a hint of cream and the toasted malt is still present. There is a nice sweet spice apparent in the retro. Smoke production is decent and ash held well past a inch, was light gray in color and solid. The last third opens with tobacco and a hint of chocolate. The sweetness has faded away the spice has become noticeable on my lips and a light char note is present. Overall a nice smoke. Quite a bit of complexity, good flavors and a nice slow burn with good smoke production. | |

The light gave a medium+ profile with a spicy retro and notes of coffee and spice and a hint of wood. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent through the first half or so after which the wood hint ramped a bit through the remainder. Very tasty, overall, and one of the more fuller-bodied conny sticks I've had in a while. Strength was about medium. (32/35)  Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn was slightly wavy but self-correcting through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a small cone. The burn continued slightly wavy but self-correcting through the remainder and things were otherwise uneventful down to the nub. Draw and smoke output remained mostly optimal throughout. (19/20) Overall impression: This one came in a five-pack from C-bid awhile back and this is the first smoke I've had with this blend. As mentioned, it's a bit unusual for a conny stick to have as much body as this one had with a strong coffee note in place of the usual light wood I get from a conny-wrappered stick, so it was a welcome change-of-pace and quite tasty and enjoyable. Good construction, too, so I'll enjoy smoking up the rest of this five-pack and may have to get some more. (31/35) Burn time: 1:23 Rating: 90 | |

The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a cone. Things were then uneventful down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining optimal throughout. (20/20) Overall impression: This one came in a five-pack from C-bid awhile back. Definitely one of Oliva's budget blends with decent conny flavors but nothing that blew my socks off or that I'd go out of my way to buy more of. | I happen to love Candela wrapper and take every opportunity to try the limited ones available. This starts typically for a Candela with notes of cut grass and hay. It transitions adding a nice punch of cinnamon spice and a woody note. Definately full medium profile. Construction was excellent with only one touch up needed. Draw was spot on. I am a fan of the many La Palina blends and now add tthis as one I enjoy. | |

My reviews of the previous sticks mostly show what I'd already arrived at from memory - the blend in this one has changed a bit as my memory of this one is that it was considerably lighter in body than what I was getting from this one. Light and airy with a certain amount of creaminess is what I remember and this one was much closer to the Man O' War Virtue blend, which I have recent experience with. Blend changes aside, it's still a great morning smoke with the conny flavors I always enjoy and I'll be smoking up the rest of my C-bid haul with the usual enthusiasm and reckless abandon... The light gave a medium-bodied profile with a slightly spicy retro and a note of cardboard with hints of butter and spice. The spice in the nose faded quickly with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note and, while this wasn't completely horrible, it was at least within spitting distance of "pretty bad". I didn't get anything resembling whiskey and what I did get was something like hot, buttered cardboard. Somehow, I managed to get through the whole thing... Strength was medium at best. (8/35)  Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a small cone. The stick tunneled a bit in the 2nd third and was trying to go out, but I managed to keep it going until it recovered. The burn line got wavy/lopsided in the last third but self-corrected before reaching the nub. Draw and smoke output remained optimal throughout except when it was tunneling. (17/20) Overall impression: This one came in a five-pack from C-bid awhile back and was definitely one of the least-wise choices I made during that shopping spree. This stick has been reviewed here twice previously, the last being back in 2010, with both reviews saying the flavors aren't up to much and it doesn't appear the blend has changed much since. Dunno, but if any stick was begging for a re-blend, it has to be this one. Now, what to do with the rest of this five-pack as I don't think they're going to get smoked, at least by me... The burn got wavy, then lopsided through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/2" on the low side of the burn line. Post-ashing, I gave it a touch-up as it showed no signs of self-correction. The burn continued wavily but self-correcting through the 2nd third and things were otherwise uneventful down to the nub. Draw and smoke output reached the low side of optimal part way through the 2nd third but never reached fully optimal before reaching the nub. (10/20) Overall impression: This one came in a five-pack from C-bid awhile back. Unfortunately, it was a bit tightly packed resulting in the aforementioned reduced draw and smoke output all the way through. Flavors were nice, so I'll update this review should the remaining sticks perform any better. (25/35) Burn time: 1:95 Rating: 73 | |
