Humidor time: 126 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 70, foot - 60 Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, and a firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10) Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of tobacco. The light gave a medium/full profile with a spicy retro and notes of rich wood, coffee, and spice. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavor staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note but this was very flavorful and pretty close to my wheelhouse for this type of rich Nicaraguan habano blend. Strength was about medium. (32/35) Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately easy draw, smoke volume on the low side of optimal, and an even burn to start. I quickly gave it a 2nd shallow V-cut on top of the initial cut but this had no effect on smoke output. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a cone. Smoke output started to improve at this point and finally reached optimal towards the end of the 2nd third. Things were then uneventful down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining mostly optimal from the end of the 2nd third on. (16/20) Overall impression: This was the last vitola from this blend sampler that arrived from Cigar Page awhile back. It was a bit tightly packed resulting in a reduced draw and smoke output most of the way through, but apart from that it was a very similar smoke to the other vitolas I've had from this blend. A very nice and rich habano blend, albeit a bit on the woody side, flavor-wise, but definitely one I'll be smoking more of. (30/35) Burn time: 1:35 Rating: 86

Solid core, oily dark brown wrapper, no veins. PLA citrus & baking; PLT faint citrus; PLD firm. A fairly easy toast & light, a moderately firm draw, a sharply even burn needing no work, & a slightly citrus smoke. Openers are orangewood, some earth, faint baking notes & a little herb & pepper spice. Strength is medium plus. The wood, citrus, earth & spice work well from the start. There is a nice balance to this cigar even though there are no real changes from beginning to end. The finish is tasty & even almost sweet by the last 1/3. The body is medium. This cigar has proven its worth.

Firm core, medium dark brown wrapper, no veins & decent oils. PLA earth & wood; PLT earth & wood; PLD airy. An easy toast & light, airy draw, even burn, & a wood & earth smoke. First notes are earth, a touch of leather, some dry wood & a bit of black pepper in mouth & nose. Flavor strength is medium. The wood comes forefront in the 1/3 w/the earth & stays that way into the 2/3. Before the 1/2 the wood picks a charcoal tinge & there is the faintest indication of bitter chocolate. This is the profile until the last 1/3 when the charcoal fades, the wood & earth gentle down, the leather returns & the chocolate is more prevalent. The finish is smooth & lightly spiced. The body is medium. Pleasant if not particularly transitional.

Humidor time: 122 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 72, foot - 66 Appearance and construction: A couple minor veins, a light sheen, box-pressed, and a moderately soft pack with no soft spots... Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was open. (9/10) Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of mild tobacco. The light gave a mild/medium profile with a spicy retro and notes of light wood, spice, and a hint of citrus. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note and this was decently flavorful with just enough spice in the mix to keep things more or less interesting throughout. Strength was about medium at best. (29/35) Smoking characteristics: The light produced an easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn was slightly wavy but self-correcting through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving no cone behind. The burn continued wavily but self-correcting through the last two thirds with draw and smoke output remaining mostly optimal throughout. (17/20) Overall impression: This one came from Small Batch as one of their COTM selections awhile back. Pretty good morning smoke but nothing that blew my socks off, flavor-wise, with construction being perfectly adequate, the wavy burn line aside. Good enough to smoke again but I wouldn't buy more of these. (29/35) Burn time: 1:16 Rating: 84

Humidor time: 124 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 69, foot - 66 Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, and a firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a double shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10) Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of rich tobacco. The light gave a medium/full profile with a spicy retro and notes of rich wood, coffee, and spice. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note but this was pretty close to my wheelhouse for this type of rich Nicaraguan Habano blend. Strength was about medium. (32/35) Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a small cone. Things were then uneventful down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining optimal throughout. (20/20) Overall impression: Yet another vitola from this blend sampler that came from Cigar Page awhile back. Pretty much an identical smoke to the 6x60 box-pressed "Soledad" I had yesterday. Same great flavors, same great construction, same enjoyment. Definitely will be smoking more of these. (32/35) Burn time: 1:24 Rating: 92

Another Raymond Pages creation. Ecuador Connecticut wrapper gives it some creamy notes of bread and light cinnamon. The Pennyslvania filler with Nicaraguan give it some spicy notes. Not a mild Connie, but more to the medium side. Construction, draw and combustion were all flawless. Enjoyable short smoke.

Humidor time: 123 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 65, foot - 58 Appearance and construction: A few minor veins, a light sheen, box-pressed, and a moderately soft pack with no soft spots... (20/20) Overall impression: This was another vitola from this blend sampler that came from Cigar Page awhile back. A really nice smoke, and it was a bit more enjoyable than the double corona I had yesterday with the wood note not being as strong as it was in that one. Definitely my favorite so far with two more vitolas to go... (32/35) Burn time: 1:25 Rating: 93
601 Serie Green Trabuco Habano Oscuro
By: druid (09/11/2024 08:48 AM)
Rock solid, dark brown wrapper, no veins & good oils. PLA wheaty & meaty; PLT molasses & earth; PLD moderate. A normal toast & light, a moderate draw, an even burn, & spruce & mixed wood smoke. First notes are wood (including spruce or pine), grains, leather & only a touch of spice. Strength is medium plus. The wood is a mix but with pine-y undertones, the leather mild. Do I detect a note of coffee bean? There's a bit of charcoal & past the 1/2 some dark chocolate. By the end the profile is a nice mix of wood, still with that pine note, grain, leather & chocolate with a smooth finish. The body is medium plus (this stick had been aging for years & probably lost a bit of potency). Well-aged.

Humidor time: 122 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 64, foot - 55 Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, and a firm pack with no soft spots... Gave this big double corona a double shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10) Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of tobacco. The light gave a medium/full profile with a spicy retro and notes of rich, charred wood, coffee, and spice. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note but this very flavorful if just a bit too woody to put it right in my wheelhouse. Strength was about medium. (31/35) Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately easy draw, smoke volume on the low side of optimal, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling on my shirt past 1" leaving a cone. After the ashing I gave it a single deep V-cut on top of the initial cuts but this had no immediate effect on smoke output, however it did finally reach optimal in the latter part of the 2nd third. The burn got a bit wavy but self-correcting in the last third before reaching the nub. Draw and smoke output remained optimal from the 2nd third on. (17/20) Overall impression: This one came in a blend sampler from Cigar Page awhile back and this was the 2nd vitola I've had from this blend, the box-pressed perfecto being the first. My review of the perfecto says that I was getting black pepper, black coffee, and leather, none of which I got in this one, although wood was a common note between them. Pretty good smoke, in any case, although as noted, it wasn't quite in my wheelhouse due to the overly strong wood note. Good enough to smoke again, though, and I have three more vitolas queued up so we'll see how those do. (30/35) Burn time: 1:47 Rating: 86
Perla del Mar Shade Toro
By: druid (09/10/2024 10:18 AM)
Firm, flatly BPd, no veins & pressed oils. PLA hay & cookie dough; PLT grass & baking; PLD easy. An easy toast, light & draw, a very even burn, & a gentle wood smoke. Lead-offs are sweet wood, sweet baking notes & a bit of black pepper on tongue & retro. Strength is medium. Slightly tart grass notes join in the 1/3 but the other flavors hold on. Early 2nd 1/3 most of the tang dissipates & is replaced by wheatiness. Past the 1/2 the grassiness is back for a bit before finally bowing out in the final 1/3. The wood, wheat & baking notes with little spice make a fine ending, The finish trails off in sweetness & the body is medium. Very enjoyable. |
