Humidor time: 152 days
Humidimeter reading: Head - 69, foot - 61
Appearance and construction: A few minor veins, no sheen, a closed candela foot, candela strips around the head, and a moderately firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10)

Flavor: Got nothing from PLA, probably due to the closed foot. The light gave a medium/full profile with a spicy retro and notes of dark wood, coffee, and spice. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with a black pepper note coming in and the coffee note ramping just a bit once the burn had progressed beyond the 1/4" of candela at the foot. This slightly heavier profile then stayed consistent through the remainder. Very tasty, overall, with just enough spice in the mix to keep things interesting throughout. Strength was about medium. (32/35)

Smoking characteristics: The light produced an easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling past 1" leaving a small cone. Things were then uneventful down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining optimal throughout. (20/20)

Overall impression: This one came from Privada CC as one of their "Brian's Box" selections awhile back. A very nice smoke it was with both flavors and construction getting the job done and I'd easily smoke it again. (32/35)

Humidor time: 151 days
Humidimeter reading: Head - 71, foot - 73
Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, a moderately firm pack with no soft spots, and a gold cloth foot-band... Gave it a double shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately tight. (8/10)

Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of tobacco. The light gave a medium/full profile with a spicy retro and notes of charred wood, coffee, spice, and a hint of something sweet. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note but this was very tasty with just enough spice and that hint of sweetness to keep things interesting throughout. Strength was about medium. (32/35)

Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately easy draw, smoke volume on the low side of optimal, and an even burn to start. The burn was a bit wavy but self-correcting through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/2" leaving a small cone. The burn continued wavily in the 2nd third, then got lopsided and a touch-up was needed. The burn continued wavily but mostly self-correcting through the remainder and down to the nub. Draw and smoke output remained optimal from the 2nd third on. (17/20)

Overall impression: This one came from Privada CC as one of their "Brian's Box" selections awhile back. First smoke I've had from this brand which I'd never heard of before or seen advertised anywhere, so presumably it's a very small brand and possibly new.  Pretty good habano smoke with very nice flavors and it would have rated higher if the construction had been a bit better.  Definitely good enough to smoke again, though. (30/35)

Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of tobacco. The light gave a medium/full profile with a spicy retro and notes of dark wood, coffee, and spice. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent through the first two thirds after which a hint of citrus came in during the last third. Very tasty, overall, with plenty of spice in the mix to keep things interesting throughout. Strength was about medium. (33/35)

Smoking characteristics: The light produced an easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a cone. Things were then uneventful down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining optimal throughout. It was a slow-burning smoke, clocking in at nearly two hours from light to nub. (20/20)

Overall impression: This one came from Privada CC as part of their monthly "Farm Rolled" pack awhile back. What a great smoke.  I'm not normally a huge fan of Sumatra blends but this one was hitting on all cylinders with loads of spice and rich Nicaraguan flavor. It's an AJ stick and probably one of his blends, so no surprise, of course. At any rate, it was so good I just emailed PCC to see if they have more... (33/35)

Solid, flatly BPd, medium brown flawless wrapper, good oils.  PLA barn-y wood; PLT aged wood; PLD moderate.  A fairly easy toast & light, a moderate draw, a pretty even burn, & a wood smoke.  Openers are dark wood & a little pepper in the mouth & more in the retro,  The flavor strength is medium plus.  Nuttiness, at times coconut-iness, imbues the 1st 1/3 sweetening the wood some.  The nut/coconut flavor builds in the 2nd 1/3 but is joined by some darker earth & coffee bean later.  The final 1/3 has all the flavors blending nicely making for a tasty finish.  The body is near full.  A very enjoyable some.

Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, and a firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10)

Flavor: PLA gave a faint whiff of tobacco. The light gave a medium-bodied profile with a slightly spicy retro and notes of wood and coffee and hints of spice and citrus. The spice in the nose faded quickly with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note and this was decently flavorful but it missed my wheelhouse by a bit due to the relative lack of enough spice in the mix. Strength was about medium. (29/35)

Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately easy draw, smoke volume on the low side of optimal, and an even burn to start. The burn was a bit wavy but self-correcting through the first third with the ash falling past 1" leaving a small cone. Smoke output was gradually improving by this point and reached optimal shortly into the 2nd third. Things were then uneventful down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining optimal from the 2nd third on. (17/20)

Overall impression: This one came from Privada CC as one of their monthly selections awhile back. It's a tribute to Jopito Kelner, patriarch of the Kelner family who were involved with Davidoff.  It was blended by Eladio Diaz, also originally with Davidoff. With all of that pedigree, you'd expect it to be a banger of a smoke, but I was left a bit underwhelmed.  Ok smoke, but nothing I'd really go out of my way to smoke again.  (29/35)

Semi firm core, dark brown oily wrapper, a couple veins.  PLA hay & some fruitiness; PLT sweet fruit; PLD easy.  An easy toast, light & draw, a very even burn, & a light sweet wood.  Opener are sweet charcoal, wood & a touch of black pepper in mouth & nose.  The charcoal backs down & a dark fruity sweetness comes on in the 1/3.  The pepper kicks up a bit.  As the 1st 1/3 enters the 2nd the fruit builds & takes on a dark cherry tone.  Notes of coffee dark chocolate, leather come & go & come again after the 1/2 tickling the palate & coloring the finish.  The body is upper medium.  Better than the original!

The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note but this was very flavorful and pretty close to my wheelhouse for this type of medium Habano blend. Strength was about medium. (32/35)

Overall impression: This one came from Privada CC as one of their monthly selections awhile back. Another fine smoke from Mr. Rivas and I should note that it's got a Peruvian binder which didn't provide anything extra that I noticed to the overall flavor profile.  But it was a fine, flavorful smoke nonetheless and is one I'd easily smoke again.  (32/35)

Semi firm core, fairly flat BP, medium brown wrapper, no veins & good oils.  PLA dried fruit; PLT more fruit & molasses; PLD easy.  An easy toast, light & draw, a sharp burn, & a slightly sandy smoke.  Leather, rich tobacco, a touch of dried fruit & a little black pepper in mouth & nose start.  Strength is upper medium.  Oak notes come on, the leather eases & the fruit fades back in the 1/3.  Traces of coffee bean in the 2nd 1/3.  Nearing the 1/2 the leather sweetens & the fruit- raisin?- returns.  The palate is smooth with little spice.  The finish is wood, leather, tobacco & just a hint of sweet.  The body is medium plus.  Terrific!

The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent through the first third after which the citrus hint ramped to a full note and stayed there through the remainder with the other flavors maintaining throughout. Very tasty, overall, and pretty close to my wheelhouse for this sort of medium Habano blend. Strength was about medium. (32/35)

Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately tight draw, thin smoke volume, and an even burn to start. I quickly gave it a 2nd shallow V-cut on top of the initial cut but this had no effect on smoke output so a single deep V-cut was then applied but again with no effect. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a cone. Smoke output had been gradually improving through the first third and finally reached optimal part way through the 2nd third. Things were then uneventful down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining optimal from the 2nd third on. (17/20)

Overall impression: This one came from Privada CC as one of their "Brian's Box" selections awhile back. Pretty nice smoke but it was a bit tightly packed with a somewhat restricted draw and reduced smoke output for the first third or so, so loses a few points for that. Great medium Habano flavors, though, and I'd definitely smoke it again. (30/35)

By: Ash in my Lap (05/13/2024 12:08 PM)
From start to finish, this cigar is an experience. The short flat cap begs to be circumcised, the style of cut I prefer on all my Parejo cigars. This technique creates a clean removal of the cap without getting into the shoulder of the cigar. Look up what HoxD is all about, there Science there is son!

This is a pretty powerful smoke from start to glorious finish. It works and wanders through flavors of Earth, Wood, Leather, Chocolate, with a solid back bone of Tobacco to carry it all. Oh, and PEPPER, all the Peppers with Red and Black being the most pronounced.

The chocolate brown wrapper is beautifully rugged, and it covers an excellent blend of filler tobaccos, the key to the strength of this cigar is the double Ligero. You have been warned!
