Cigar Database Guidelines by Junglepete

CIGAR DATABASE ENTRY GUIDELINES

Thanks for taking the time to enter a cigar into our database. In order to make your effort easier and to help our administrators process your entry quicker, here are a few tips you may find helpful.

Be sure to check thoroughly if the cigar is already in the database. Sometimes a cigar can be found under a larger flagship name. The best way to check would be to use the "Search Phrase" option found by clicking "Cigar Database". This option works best with one word only. Pick the most popular word in the cigar name to search.
Along with your entry, please submit a link as to where you found the cigar. You can submit this link in the "Notes" section of the "New Cigar Entry" form. If you do not have a link, please make a note as to where you purchased the cigar or where you obtained it from. This step really helps our administrators identify and approve your entry as quick as possible.
When it comes to labeling the Filler and Binder, please identify the country of where the tobacco was grown rather than where the seed came from. If you only have seed information then enter it. If you have both seed and plant origin you may enter both together.
When it comes to wrappers, only use the identifying term "Natural" when you cannot verify the actual color.
Identifying color can sometimes be difficult. You can use this color guide which has been adopted from Perelman's Pocket Cyclopedia of Cigars:

Double Claro - Also known as "American Market Selection" (AMS) or Candela, this is a green wrapper.

Claro - This is a very light tan color, almost beige in shade.

Colorado Claro - A medium brown color found on many cigars, this popular shade is also referred to as "Natural" or "English Market Selection" (EMS) Again, please do not use the term "Natural" unless you cannot identify the color.

Colorado - This shade is instantly recognizable by the obvious reddish tint, it is also known as Rosado.

Colorado Maduro - This shade is darker than Colorado Claro and Colorado and has more of a deep brown color with just a tinge of deep red to it.

Maduro - This is a very dark brown shade almost bordering on black. Wrappers of this color are commonly grown in Connecticut, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Brazil.

Oscuro - This is black...really black.
The 'Brand" name of a cigar is the main name eg: Perdomo, Montecristo, H. Upmann, 5 Vegas etc. Please enter the brand name only once, it is not necessary to enter it a second time on the "Cigar Name" line. Also, please do not leave any blank spaces after the "Brand Name" or "Cigar Name".
The "Cigar Name" is usually the name for the specific brand line and/or the vitola. The "Cigar Name" can sometimes be changed by retailers to suit their own marketing strategies. Researching the cigar and going with the majority is usually best. Many times the identifying shape of the cigar may not be the actual shape according to our standards, that is okay and should be entered under "Cigar Name" as the retailer has it listed. The actual shape according to our standards will be entered under "Shape".
After a thorough search, a cigar may still be entered even if all the information is not attainable. Just leave the space blank and our administrators will fill in the blanks when possible.
