This cigar was enjoyed with Cognac

Pre-Light: 18 Points of 10 Possible

The Hemingway is a decent looking cigar. It is quite firm, maybe a little stiff and I almost thought too stiff and worried about a possible tight draw. There was definitely no noticable soft spots. The cigar shows a nice rich color and is fairly smooth other than a couple of thicker veins showing through here and there. Though not oily, and more on the dry side, the matt finish was still appealing. The cap was perfect and took the cut like a champion. The foot, though shaped like a nipple, was rolled very well. I thought the prelight aroma was lacking from the outside and would have liked a little more to sniff, but once it was cut there was a nice aroma of farmland, straw and rich tobacco coming from the head. The unlit draw was easy.

Lighting and Burn: 14 Points of 15 Possible

The cigar lit very easily and drew well considering the small sized nipple shaped foot. Once past the foot the cigar produced great volumes of smoke with a perfect draw throughout the entire smoke. The burn was slightly wavy at first, but not enough to require any touch-ups. Re-lights were not needed and by the second third the burn was perfect. The ash was somewhat flakey, light grey to grey white and dropped at every inch. By the last third the ash was tighter and not flaky anymore. The burn was perfect in that it was slow and required no special attention at anytime.

Construction: 28 Points of 30 Possible

I found this cigar to have a perfect draw. I worried that the draw might have been tight in that it was a very firmly rolled and fully packed stick, but the worries were completely unwarranted. There were no wrapper or cap issues. The only flaw I detected was that perhaps a little too much glue was used. Whatever they use to hold the band was smeared beyond the band and left a white glossy stain, this was also found around the foot of the cigar.

Flavor and Aroma: 30 Points of 45 Possible

1st Third:

Just a touch spicy on the first few draws, and then more spicy through the nipple stage, but quite nice, and then the spice mellows. I notice a touch of mild sweetness coming through and a rich earthy smoke flavor.

2nd Third:

The mellow spice hangs in there as does the mild sweetness. The cigar mellows even more into a rather mild tasting, medium-bodied stage. Very smooth indeed. Thus far not very complex, but consistently good at what there is. I have always liked the cedar aroma of Hemingways once they are lit, and this one does not dissapoint.

Last  Third:

The flavors pick up a bit here with a more woodsy taste, though not cedar, and a touch of licorice, but still holding the bit of spice, though losing the sweetness. As the burn nears the band I detect a bit of bitterness, but this passes once through the band area. I smoked it just past the last inch and it finished smooth with a nice taste left on the palate.

Summary

All in all a great smoke that lasted the better part of 2 hours. I enjoyed it very much, but expected the flavors to be a little more on the robust side than the naturals. The level of complexity was just enough for me, but perhaps could have produced more in the first half. I have noticed that many retailers can charge up to 75% more for the Maduros. For me, as far a quality goes, I believe they are not worth paying more for than the naturals.
