My Father La Promesa ("The Promise") cigars represent the promise that company-owner Jose Pepin Garcia made to his father when he departed his home country of Cuba all by himself in 2001 - that he would make his father, who remained behind, proud of his success. These medium to full-bodied cigars are crafted using tobacco from Garcia's own farms in Nicaragua combined with a Nicaraguan binder and completed with a Habano Oscuro wrapper from Ecuador.

Pre-Light: 10 Points of 10 Possible

Nice little cigar, a subtle oil sheen on the beautiful colorado wrapper. This is definitely not an oscuro. It has a triple cap, the wrapper feels resilient and supple and does not seem fragile or prone to cracking. The foot has an aroma of well cured Nicaraguan tobacco, very rich notes in the pre-light draw. Clean cut with a Xikar guillotine cutter, no little bits on the tongue to spit out.

Lighting and Burn: 14 Points of 15 Possible

Lit quickly, the cigar burned exceptionally sharp and even for the first 1/2" with a dark grey ash. It started to get wavy as it came to the first ashing, which fell off after 1" of burn. The burn again became razer sharp before becoming slightly wavy towards the second ash. Throughout the entire smoke, it had a flawless draw, with no relights, adjustments or purging need.

Construction: 29 Points of 30 Possible

The construction is top notch, yielding a perfect draw, with a nice triple cap, but with a little sloppy yamakah. The wrapper is a high grade. The second band and top band both came off without damaging the wrapper. Its a really nice shiny but not oily wrapper with a pretty colorado color.

Flavor and Aroma: 37 Points of 45 Possible

Initial impressions are wood, with hints of sharp blackberry, coffee. Throughout the entire cigar, I was left with impressions of a very much full bodied profile, without overpowering the middle/back of my palate. Into the middle the taste profile remained fairly consistent, tending to increase in complexity before becoming more woody and a hint of bitterness in the back and sides of my mouth towards the last third. I enjoyed the retrohale throughout the entire smoke, but sharpness on the back and sides of the mouth increased in the last third so the retrohale was the only thing holding it up. Its not overly complex, just full flavors and an enjoyable retrohale.

Summary

The My Father La Promesa is typical for a Don Pepin production with fantastic construction. In this vitola, it isn't my favorite of the range, as the sweet spot in the first and middle passed too quickly for my liking. Enjoyable, I will probably pick a few up on occasion, though this will not be a box purchase for me. Total burn time was around 50 minutes so its a great selection for a short evening smoke.
