My Father La Promesa ("The Promise") cigars represent the promise that company-owner Jose Pepin Garcia made to his father when he departed his home country of Cuba all by himself in 2001 - that he would make his father, who remained behind, proud of his success. These medium to full-bodied cigars are crafted using tobacco from Garcia's own farms in Nicaragua combined with a Nicaraguan binder and completed with a Habano Oscuro wrapper from Ecuador.

Pre-Light: 10 Points of 10 Possible

Beautiful looking cigar that is well rolled. The My Father cigars always have a "classy" look to them with a beautiful band and presentation. Pre-Light aroma is barnyard and tobacco with the pre-light draw tasting similar with a little spice before it is even lit. Zero soft spots, a slight oily sheen to the wrapper.

Lighting and Burn: 14 Points of 15 Possible

Burn is not perfect but in no way needed any correction, smoke volume is great. Ash is a light and dark grey mix which is a bit flaky. After the first 1/2 inch the burn is perfect. No relights required.

Construction: 29 Points of 30 Possible

Draw started out just a little snug but opened up to near perfect within the first few draws. This cigars construction is stellar, no soft spots, cap took a straight cut well and after the first few puffs the draw was spot on.

Flavor and Aroma: 42 Points of 45 Possible

1/2: First flavor that hits me is spice combined with a woodsy leather mix and a slight metallic undertone. Spice mellows out a bit and the rest of the flavors come thru with the metallic (copper penny) flavor increasing slightly, personally I do not find this offensive at all.

2/2: Spice has dropped off considerably and the rest of the flavors haven't changed a whole lot, not a lot of complexity but currently with allergy season upon us my palate isn't in the greatest shape.

Summary

First things first, thanks to Doug for sending out a great cigar and allowing me to review it. Looking forward to grabbing a few of these for the humidor. Typical of all My Father cigars that I have enjoyed, they have a great flavor profile that fits in my wheelhouse.
