My Father La Promesa ("The Promise") cigars represent the promise that company-owner Jose Pepin Garcia made to his father when he departed his home country of Cuba all by himself in 2001 - that he would make his father, who remained behind, proud of his success. These medium to full-bodied cigars are crafted using tobacco from Garcia's own farms in Nicaragua combined with a Nicaraguan binder and completed with a Habano Oscuro wrapper from Ecuador.

Pre-Light: 9 Points of 10 Possible

A couple of minor veins, an oily sheen, a firm pack with no soft spots, and beautiful double bands... Gave it a straight cut with the guillotine and pre-light draw was moderately open. Pre-light aroma gave a faint whiff of tobacco.

Lighting and Burn: 14 Points of 15 Possible

Easy toast and light producing an easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed mostly even through the first third with the grey-ish white ash dropping at 1 1/4" leaving a cone. The burn continued a bit wavy but self-correcting down to the nub.

Construction: 27 Points of 30 Possible

This stick appeared well-constructed with minimal veins and and a firm pack. The cap took the straight cut well. Removal of the main band caused the underlying wrapper to partly unfurl but I was able to keep this in check with a saliva application and it didn't affect smokeability. Draw and smoke output were optimal throughout.

Flavor and Aroma: 38 Points of 45 Possible

The light gave a medium-bodied profile with a spicy retro and notes of chalk and licorice. A hint of coffee appeared part way through the first third, a hint of cocoa in the 2nd third, and a hint of wood in the last third with the body ramping up to medium/full. Unusual flavors with the chalk and licorice as I had not tasted that in a cigar before now, but quite pleasant and flavorful. Strength was better than medium.

Summary

A flavorful little smoke, this one, and quite pleasant, although not entirely in my wheelhouse. The CI page for this blend mentions "mint chocolate" and that's probably what my palate was interpreting as chalk and licorice. At any rate, very nice and I'd smoke it again.
