My Father La Promesa ("The Promise") cigars represent the promise that company-owner Jose Pepin Garcia made to his father when he departed his home country of Cuba all by himself in 2001 - that he would make his father, who remained behind, proud of his success. These medium to full-bodied cigars are crafted using tobacco from Garcia's own farms in Nicaragua combined with a Nicaraguan binder and completed with a Habano Oscuro wrapper from Ecuador.

Pre-Light: 10 Points of 10 Possible

Oily wrapper, veiny, with some very prominent veins, firm, cuts extremely well with no fraying. Prelight aromas are deep chocolate, with some nutty bread
Being a brand manager I love to see brands like what is on this cigar A lot of effort went into the design and it is very eye catching. Putting that much effort into the band makes you think they put a lot into the cigar. It did everything you would expect to get you excited about picking up this cigar and smoking it.

Lighting and Burn: 14 Points of 15 Possible

Light quickly and easily. Burn line throughout the smoke is exceptional. Burn rate was good. Ash is gray with some black, very strong and holds very well. No issues with canoeing or tunneling, no relights or touch ups. Smoke volume was only a small draw back as the smoke was light and wispy just not very much of it.

Construction: 30 Points of 30 Possible

While the cigar was well packed, the draw was excellent and had no issues. The cap was great and held up the entire smoke and never got soft, never had any loose ends. No wrapper issues, seams were tight.

Flavor and Aroma: 33 Points of 45 Possible

First third: Initial hot draws were strong, like many Garcia cigars, but not in a peppery sense, straight ligero. About halfway through this third it mellows some, but still strong. You get a hot sensation on the front of the tongue. None of the pre-light flavors appear at all. Not a lot of complexity thru the first third, even in the retrohale, still strong ligero, but not much more.

Second third: Very much the same as the first third, some slight creaminess still waiting for some flavor changes, but they never showed. Kept the burn on the tongue.

Final third: You begin to get some pepper, but only in the background with some more slightly showing in the retrohale. For the most part kept the same profile the entire smoke.

Summary

This cigar delivered almost everything you would expect from a My Father. Great look, great construction, great burn. Disappointingly lacking any complexity. Some significant time resting would most likely help with the flavors. This is such an iconic brand you almost shouldn't talk bad about it, people would question your sanity. Would like to try the lancero to see if there is more complexity with a different wrapper/filler ratio. All in all would like to try again, this time with about a year of age.
Smoke time: 1 hour, 10 minutes
