Inspired by Zino Davidoff's pioneering spirit, Davidoff Master Blenders went on an exploration for a new type of blend that would stimulate both the bitter and sweet taste buds. Finally, they found it in Nicaragua, where the earth is infused by the fiery activity of some of the country's forty volcanoes. The elegant Davidoff Nicaragua is spicy and peppery at the beginning, before evolving into a pleasant smoke with the familiar delight of the dual Davidoff sweet and dark bitter chocolate notes. It is only Nicaraguan Puro they've ever released, and combines a 10-year-aged Habano Seed Nicaraguan Rosado wrapper with a Jalapa binder and filler tobaccos from Nicaragua's best growing regions: Ometepe, Condega, and Estelí.

This cigar was enjoyed with Cold Mint Tea/Aged Rum

Pre-Light: 10 Points of 10 Possible

Lovely looking stick here. No bumps or bends. Evenly filled and firm to the touch. Nice weight in the hand and certainly not under-filled. A nice Rosado sheen to the wrapper. The bunching was even and very close knit. The cap cut easily and the aroma was of mild barnyard and aromatic honey. The pre-light draw was firm.

Lighting and Burn: 13 Points of 15 Possible

I was worried a little that the tight bunching and firm cold draw might mean less smoke production. Once lit, the draw was just a hair tight and the smoke production just a hair short, but luckily this only lasted for the first 1/2 inch. The rest of the cigar performed wonderfully.

Construction: 30 Points of 30 Possible

The cigar burned straight with a good draw except for the first 1/2 inch. No relights or touch-ups were needed. The wrapper was applied very smoothly and never unraveled. This stick was put together with care and skill. The canon was very straight and well filled. I never expected that a cigar so filled and with the appearance of being too tightly rolled would burn so well. I cannot deduct points here as I already took two off for the first 1/2 inch issue.

Flavor and Aroma: 43 Points of 45 Possible

Smooth or what! Very smooth. So smooth it almost feels mild, but it's not, the strength blends in behind the smoothness. Some sweet notes weave in and out,a lovely honey taste. Some milder cedar notes blend in to the mix. Not much spice to speak of, but there is an very flavorful twang that is reminiscent of a Serie D Cuban Partagas. Some leather tastes join the fray during the second third. The cigar remains smooth right to the end. No bitterness present whatsoever. The balance of flavors is dead on for me. The strength is a creeper in that it always seemed like a medium bodied stick but by the end the nicotine left me a little light headed. I cannot say there was a lot of complexity, but what was there and the balance of it was superb. I took this treat to the nub, happily.

Summary

The highlight of this cigar was the smoothness and the twang. I wish I could describe the twang better in flavor identity but I always fail with that illusive taste description. I really enjoyed this cigar, and if not for the price I would keep them in stock. Come to think of it, if I can keep Padrons in stock for indulging then why not these?
