Inspired by Zino Davidoff's pioneering spirit, Davidoff Master Blenders went on an exploration for a new type of blend that would stimulate both the bitter and sweet taste buds. Finally, they found it in Nicaragua, where the earth is infused by the fiery activity of some of the country's forty volcanoes. The elegant Davidoff Nicaragua is spicy and peppery at the beginning, before evolving into a pleasant smoke with the familiar delight of the dual Davidoff sweet and dark bitter chocolate notes. It is only Nicaraguan Puro they've ever released, and combines a 10-year-aged Habano Seed Nicaraguan Rosado wrapper with a Jalapa binder and filler tobaccos from Nicaragua's best growing regions: Ometepe, Condega, and Estelí.

Pre-Light: 7 Points of 10 Possible

Cigar wrapper looks like a work of art, despite being fairly veiny. Mild pleasant aroma, barely noticeable. Pre-light puff reveals a tight draw requiring a paperclip intervention. This intervention continues after lighting.

Lighting and Burn: 10 Points of 15 Possible

Once I stabbed an airway into it, it began burning evenly. Smoke volume was moderate, probably due to still tight draw. Solid ash. Draw loosens up in the middle third. Burn gets worse in the final third just as the draw and flavor improve.

Construction: 20 Points of 30 Possible

Draw was very tight and required a paperclip even before lighting up and then repeat stabbings once lit.
Middle has good draw. Cap is sturdy and holds out to the end. Final third is best despite uneven burn.

Flavor and Aroma: 30 Points of 45 Possible

The cigar starts out mild, although too soon to measure nicotine. Wrapper tastes bitter. Retrohaling was futile until the middle, when the draw improved. Woody bitterness is the main theme. No complexity detected. Second third is moderate strength and harsh. Final third is the best, surprisingly. All the flaws mellow out. Nicotine remained moderate.

Summary

This cigar was a disappointment. The flavor was mediocre as was the construction. After all the obstructions were burnt through the finale was good. Ironically, if I weren't reviewing this, I probably would've tossed it in the middle and missed the best third.
