Inspired by Zino Davidoff's pioneering spirit, Davidoff Master Blenders went on an exploration for a new type of blend that would stimulate both the bitter and sweet taste buds. Finally, they found it in Nicaragua, where the earth is infused by the fiery activity of some of the country's forty volcanoes. The elegant Davidoff Nicaragua is spicy and peppery at the beginning, before evolving into a pleasant smoke with the familiar delight of the dual Davidoff sweet and dark bitter chocolate notes. It is only Nicaraguan Puro they've ever released, and combines a 10-year-aged Habano Seed Nicaraguan Rosado wrapper with a Jalapa binder and filler tobaccos from Nicaragua's best growing regions: Ometepe, Condega, and Estelí.

Pre-Light: 10 Points of 10 Possible

Attractive looking cigar with simple, classic and masculine looking double bands. Wrapper had a reddish-brown hue with minimal veins (but more veins than other Davidoff lines). Nice triple cap that clipped easily with my straight cutter. Pre-light aroma was sweet with a slight barnyard scent.

Lighting and Burn: 14 Points of 15 Possible

The cigar lit easily and never required a touch up. The burn remained relatively straight, and corrected itself on the couple of occasions when it burned a little wobbly. No complaints about that. The dark gray & black layered ash held on to about 1.5" before being knocked off each time. The burn was on the cooler side and produced an average amount of smoke. The draw had just the right amount of pull.

Construction: 30 Points of 30 Possible

This specimen was solidly constructed and heavy-in-hand, with no soft spots, even as it approached the hot "cherry" end. Sported a nice triple cap. It was expertly rolled as evidenced by the perfect draw, the burn that never needed to be corrected, the mosaic of layered ash and a wrapper that never flaked or unwrapped. Simply stated, it never needed maintenance of any kind and allowed me to just sit back and enjoy the experience.

Flavor and Aroma: 40 Points of 45 Possible

A very well-balanced cigar, not overly complex, but blended in such a way that it was enjoyable from beginning to end.

Upon lighting, this cigar has a rich profile. The first third reminded me of roasted peanuts, espresso, ginger snaps, something woody, slightly sweet with only a hint of black pepper. My only complaint would be a slightly tannic taste developing on the back of my tongue. Medium to medium full in both body and strength.

The cigar settled down in the second third, becoming a bit more creamy and the tannins have disappeared. Becoming very smooth. The black pepper is more prominent now. Still more espresso, roasted nuts, baking spice and charred cedar. A sweet earthiness has been added to the profile. Now medium full in both body and strength.

The flavors in the final third were very similar to the middle of the cigar. Still smooth. The only real change was the cigar has backed off to medium in body and strength. It was still delightful, and I ended up nubbing it down to ½".

Summary

I've always been a fan of Davidoff's many offerings, and this Nicaraguan series is one of my favorites. Not a typical Davidoff, and it definitely has a place in my humidor. A big thanks to Vroomp for sharing this great cigar for the critique.
