Welcome to a Geek Critique of a cigar generously provided to us by David at https://www.egars.com/" target="_blank">egars.com.  The Camacho Liberty Series, now 18 years strong, is launched annually ahead of the July 4th holiday to celebrate and honor the birth and history of the United States. The Liberty Series blends have been comprised of tobaccos from a variety of different origins, as well as vintages. The 2020 Liberty Series blend utilizes four different primings, all which come from a single farm and single vintage, and aged four years. This distinct blend truly showcases the versatility and multitude of flavors that can be achieved when utilizing this incredible varietal. Special thanks goes out to David at https://www.egars.com/" target="_blank">egars.com for providing the cigars and to Wescat (Kevin) for coordinating this!

This cigar was enjoyed with Old Fashioned

Pre-Light: 8 Points of 10 Possible

The Camacho 2020 Liberty cigar is packaged in individual coffins that are blue with silver inscriptions. The cigar is a hefty size at 6 inches long and having a ring gauge of sixty. The box press makes the cigar easy to hold. The Cigar's Ecuadorian Habano wrapper has a wonderful golden brown color and it is lightly oiled giving a shiny finish to the cigar. The brand band of the 2020 Liberty is complimented by the golden brown wrapper. The band is not fancy but elegant in its simplicity. The band has a blue background with a few red stripes and silver lettering. With this band, the cigar is visually striking when the blue coffin is first opened.  The cigar is well made though the seams are visible and the wrapper leaf is a bit veiny. These do not detract from the cigar's beauty. The barrel and the foot are firm with an aroma of barnyard having a hint of cedar. The cap is well made though the interface between the cap and the barrel is visible.  The cap held nicely when cut with a Colibri v-cutter. There were no loose ends and no fraying of the tobacco leaf.

Lighting and Burn: 14 Points of 15 Possible

The foot of the cigar was toasted with a single torch Xikar lighter emitting a pleasant aroma of roasted nuts.  The Liberty lit easily and required no re-lights or touch-ups.  The cigar was smoked over a period of about two hours. The smoke production of the Liberty 2020 was more than adequate. The smoke was smooth with a medium body. The cigar burned evenly throughout the smoking. There was no tunneling nor other issues. The ash was compact and sturdy holding to the cigar until it was tapped at one and one half inches in length. The ash was white and gray in color.

Construction: 25 Points of 30 Possible

The Camacho 2020 Liberty was well-made and there were no construction failures during the smoking of the cigar. The cigar was firm to the touch. The cap cut nicely and held together throughout the smoking of the cigar. Some veins were visible though these did not take take away from the look of the cigar, and the visibility of the veins were not considered on the scoring of the cigar's construction. The seams of the cigar were very visible; however, no problems presented as the cigar burned. The visibility of the seams and the cap's interface with the barrel wrapper reduced the construction score.

Flavor and Aroma: 43 Points of 45 Possible

The flavor of the cigar varied slightly during the two hours it was smoked. The initial flavor was roasted nuts with a hint of pepper. The roasted flavor of nuts gave way within the first third of the cigar to a nutty flavor with a very light hint of pepper and a stronger hint of wood. These changes were subtle as the smoking of the cigar entered the second third. The ash was tapped for the fist time in the transition from the first third to the second third.

The cigar's smoke remained medium in body and adequate in volume through the second third of the cigar. The flavors remained similar with some variation with breadiness and earth tones appearing. These were noted along with a continued nutty flavor being the most predominate.

The last third of the cigar found the smoke becoming heavier in body though it remained very palatable. A smoothness remained. The main flavor of the cigar remained nutty. Other hints came into play, including leather and pepper.

Summary

The Camacho 2020 Liberty Cigar was a pleasure to smoke. The cigar presented well with its golden wrapper, wide and colorful brand band and the well-made coffin which contained the cigar. The consistent flavor of the cigar was nutty while other hints of flavor appeared at various stages of the cigar. These included roasted nuts, leather, wood, and earth tones. The cigar was overall medium in body though there was a heaviness near the end of the cigar. The cigar was medium in strength. The underlying flavor remained apparent throughout the smoking of the cigar with varying flavors vaguely appearing and disappearing as the cigar was enjoyed for about two hours of time.
