Welcome to another Member sponsored Geek Critique.  This one has been generously sponsored by our member Vroomp (Brad).  The cigar provided for this round is the http://www.cigargeeks.com/cigardb/default.asp?action=showcig&cigar_id=7368">Arturo Fuente Don Carlos No. 2.  Carlos Fuente Jr. blended the Don Carlos cigar line to honor his father, Fuente patriarch Carlos Fuente Sr., for whom the cigar is named. The cigar has long been prized for its flavor and consistency. Unlike the company's spicy Fuente Fuente OpusX brand, Don Carlos cigars are nuanced. The cigars are wrapped in toothy Cameroon harvested from Western Africa. The filler and binder leaves include some of the oldest tobaccos in Fuente's extensive and massive tobacco inventory. The No. 2, which first hit the market in 1997, is a considerably fat pyramid, with a portly 55 ring gauge. As with most Don Carlos cigars, the smoke is a slow starter.

This cigar was enjoyed with Busch Light

Pre-Light: 9 Points of 10 Possible

Nice wrapper with little to no veins or blemishes, cap cut well with my Xikar straight cut. PLA of sweet tobacco and a hint of cedar. I find a lot of Cameroon wrapper to be quite fragile but this seemed to hold up nicely during the entire smoke.

Lighting and Burn: 13 Points of 15 Possible

Burn was darn close to perfect and may have been if the wind outside had not been a factor, ash held on until tapped off and smoke volume was great. No relights were required and the ash was a bit flaky nut not terrible by any means.

Construction: 30 Points of 30 Possible

Draw was spot on and I truthfully had no issues with the construction of this cigar which seems to be the case for most AF cigars I have smoked. Wrapper held up nicely without any issues there. Cap stayed put during entire smoke and draw was also consistent throughout.

Flavor and Aroma: 44 Points of 45 Possible

Definitely would put this cigar in the medium category:

1/2 - Flavors of earth, leather, cedar and a bit of spice, burn was very good and no touch ups were needed.

2/2 - Second half of this cigar the spice seemed to fade just a bit and the cedar as well but the cigar did pick up a "heavier" deep tobacco flavor. This was definitely a great cigar in my opinion.

Summary

This cigar was a great treat on the beach during vacation on South Padre Island. Big thanks to Brad for including me in this one. I don't find myself gravitating to a lot of AF cigars but this one is most definitely a treat.
