Miami Robusto.

The Hype: The Miami limited edition, also known as the Thermonuclear, is powerful, so make sure you sit down while you smoke it. This cigar takes its name from the legendary volcano that is located just outside of the Nicaraguan city of Granada. When you first light it up, you can see that the name makes sense. This solid, full bodied smoke is made of 100% aged Nicaraguan tobaccos. The wrapper is from the infamous Jalapa region, known for its oily and spicy tobaccos. The original Mombacho Thermonuclear was introduced in 2004 by Tabacalera Tropical (the company now known as Casa Fernández) and was made in Honduras. In 2016, production was moved to Casa Fernández in Miami, using the same all Nicaraguan blend as the original cigar, and making it an exclusive to Serious Cigars of Houston, Texas (now owned by JR Cigars). Mombacho by Aganorsa should not be confused with another Nicaraguan brand also carrying the name. (There are two different Mombacho brands in the U.S.)

This cigar was enjoyed with Water

Pre-Light: 10 Points of 10 Possible

The wrapper has a slight sheen with invisible seams. The cigar has an almost even light chocolate hue. There were a couple small white spot imperfections. I was getting a musty smell in the aroma or a deep dark chocolate/fruit note. I used a shallow double v-cut for a moderate draw. The cigar fits nice in the hand due to the 54 ring gauge, not too small or big where it's tiring to hold.

Lighting and Burn: 15 Points of 15 Possible

The cigar takes to a slow toasting well. At the beginning of the smoke it was a slow burner with first 1" in about 23 min. The first ash was at nearly two inches leaving behind one of the best cones I've seen. Almost perfect symmetry and centered. The ash is a light gray with no flaking issues. It is strong and produced a solid thud when hitting the tray. The cigar smoke output was on the light side to start but was very thick halfway to the end. Towards the end of the smoke I had another solid 1.5" ash again leaving a smaller cone. I didn't have to touch the cigar up through the duration.

Construction: 30 Points of 30 Possible

The cap was applied decently with some seams and curling. This is a dense cigar with no soft spots. The somewhat tighter draw at prelight has loosened a bit allowing for an even burn ring during puffs. The two bands were removed with no wrapper damage. The wrapper didn't split or start to unravel at any point.

Flavor and Aroma: 40 Points of 45 Possible

1/3: The aroma off the foot is a spicy pepper almost cayenne like. I picked up a prominent cedar and a taste I'm not familiar with, some kind of deep, almost dirty earth but it's not off putting. The Finish doesn't linger, it's light and short lived. It leans a bit more dry on the palate requiring a few sips of a beverage. I didn't get a big strength kick in the first third. Retrohale was smooth and not spicy, just picked up a slight toast/nuttiness.

2/3: I enjoyed with the Lindor chocolate, really brought out the nuttiness. It's a earthy type of nut flavor with a hint of sweetness maybe cashew.

3/3: At this point the cigar is definitely full bodied. There are very prominent flavors of earth and the nut flavor. Strength was a solid medium. The retrohale picks up more leaving eye watering spice towards the end. Smoked to the nub in 1hr 40min.

Summary

Overall, this was a very well constructed cigar from start to finish minus the less than open draw at the beginning. The cigar progresses well and I could pick up a transition mainly between the first half and last half of the cigar. The flavors kept me interested as I can only remember one cigar having more of a dirtiness to it but still smokable. A flavor it's hard for me to describe which is nice for a change. The Drew Estate Pimp Stick reminds me of what taste I'm trying to describe. I was anticipating more of a full strength based on the profile and what I've read but I can't take too many points off for that as the flavors took center stage. I would definitely smoke one again when I want to mix it up. Solid smoke! A huge thanks again to JunglePete!!
