Miami Robusto.

The Hype: The Miami limited edition, also known as the Thermonuclear, is powerful, so make sure you sit down while you smoke it. This cigar takes its name from the legendary volcano that is located just outside of the Nicaraguan city of Granada. When you first light it up, you can see that the name makes sense. This solid, full bodied smoke is made of 100% aged Nicaraguan tobaccos. The wrapper is from the infamous Jalapa region, known for its oily and spicy tobaccos. The original Mombacho Thermonuclear was introduced in 2004 by Tabacalera Tropical (the company now known as Casa Fernández) and was made in Honduras. In 2016, production was moved to Casa Fernández in Miami, using the same all Nicaraguan blend as the original cigar, and making it an exclusive to Serious Cigars of Houston, Texas (now owned by JR Cigars). Mombacho by Aganorsa should not be confused with another Nicaraguan brand also carrying the name. (There are two different Mombacho brands in the U.S.)

Pre-Light: 9 Points of 10 Possible

A few minor veins, an oily sheen, a triple cap, and a firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a double shallow V-cut, which the cap took well with no wrapper splits, and the pre-light draw was moderately open. Pre-light sniff gave a whiff of earthy tobacco.

Lighting and Burn: 14 Points of 15 Possible

The light produced an easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed razor-sharp through the first third with the tight grey ash falling at 1 1/2" leaving a cone. The burn was slightly wavy but self-correcting through the last two thirds and things were otherwise uneventful down to the nub. Draw and smoke output were optimal throughout.

Construction: 29 Points of 30 Possible

This stick was very well-constructed with no visible wrapper flaws and only minor veins. It appeared to have a triple cap, which took my double shallow V-cut well with no wrapper splits.  The draw was good throughout in spite of the firm pack, another sign of excellent construction.

Flavor and Aroma: 41 Points of 45 Possible

The light gave a full-bodied profile with a spicy retro and notes of black pepper, leather, spice, and something like fuel fumes or burning rubber... Never got that from a stick before and it wasn't nearly as bad as it sounds, but that's what came to mind. It also reminded me of other sticks I've had that were heavy on ligero as this one is. The spice in the nose faded through the first half inch with the other flavors mellowing (and the fuel fumes also fading) and the body receding to medium/full through the first third. This slightly mellower profile then stayed consistent through the remainder apart from the pepper ramping a bit in the 2nd third, then receding again by the last third. Quite tasty, overall. Strength was about medium or a bit better but the nicotine intake never affected my head to any significant degree through the course of the smoke.

Summary

Coming from Aganorsa/Casa Fernandez this was about what I was expecting, both in terms of flavor (fuel fumes aside) and construction.  An effortless, excellent, and flavorful smoke with just the right amount of spice to tingle my taste-buds from start to finish with zero struggle factor and lots of smoke output.  This blend is available in two other vitolas, so those are now on my shopping list...
