Welcome to another Member sponsored Geek Critique generously sponsored by our member Cfickter (Chuck). The cigar provided for this round is the CAO Arcana Mortal Coil Toro.

To honor the "old-world tobacco processing methods", CAO is revisited the unique old and rustic fermentation process of Andullo tobacco into their cigar the CAO Arcana Mortal Coil.  Like the name states, this cigar takes a rustic leaf of Andullo tobacco and rolls it into long cylinders, then wraps them tightly in palm tree pods and hangs them up like a sausage to undergo fermentation for two years. This results in typically sweet, dense logs of concentrated Dominican tobacco. These "logs" are then combined with a Connecticut shade binder and a filler blend of Honduran tobacco from the Jamastran Valley, Nicaraguan tobacco from EstelĂ and some Dominican Piloto Cubano and encases it all inside of dark Connecticut broadleaf wrapper.

This cigar was enjoyed with Water

Pre-Light: 9 Points of 10 Possible

This cigar had a mottled dark brown and black wrapper, a bit rustic but with a slightly oily sheen, with miniscule veins running in every direction. Sports a 7.5" band "coiled" around the cigar. The pre-light aroma was tobacco and raisins, and the cold draw was more like cocoa and something a bit sour.

Lighting and Burn: 15 Points of 15 Possible

The cigar burned like a champion with a relatively straight burn line and no retouches required.  The ash was flaky and held on for over an inch at a time, and it produced lots of blueish smoke. The draw was almost perfect with just enough tug needed.

Construction: 28 Points of 30 Possible

The cigar was solidly rolled and heavy-in-hand. The cap was well applied and cut cleanly. The miniscule veins running every which way through the wrapper never posed to be a problem (it just looked like they applied more than one wrapper leaf and in different directions). As stated previously, the draw was almost perfect with just enough tug needed.

Flavor and Aroma: 38 Points of 45 Possible

Upon lighting, the cigar gave notes of earthiness, unsweetened chocolate and red pepper (but not overwhelming). It was medium in both body and strength.

The second third continued the earthiness, unsweetened chocolate and added some woody notes as well. The red pepper moved to the background with more of a "warming" note as opposed to a strong pepper note. Body increased to medium-full, and strength remained at medium.

The final third developed a creamy characteristic that was an overlay to the other remaining notes.  I also started to detect a little bit of sour cherry on the roof of my mouth, which was a surprise at this point in the cigar.  There was little or no aftertaste left on my tongue.  It finished at medium in both body and strength.

Summary

This cigar was enjoyable.  It was well-constructed, had a perfect draw, and just enough complexity in flavor to keep it interesting, while the notes that were present are all quite nice.  I think that the medium strength would make this appealing to both experienced and novice smokers. I definitely will be picking up a few of these to keep in rotation.
