This cigar was enjoyed with Sweet Tea
Pre-Light: 10 Points of 10 Possible
Pre-light the cigar looked nice, cut nicely, had a good strong aroma of tobacco. It had a few small veins, and had a nice boxed press shape to it. The wrapper was a med brown in color, with almost some red hues to it. It was not overly oily, and felt kind of light in the hand. It's pre-light draw was not too tight, fairly open.
Lighting and Burn: 14 Points of 15 Possible
The cigar burned really well, but burned fairly fast, being a 28 minute burn time total for the whole cigar. No tunneling or running though, as it stayed razor sharp level for the entire cigar. The cigar was pretty open as far as draw goes after it was lit. Ash didn't hold on very long, but needed no re-lights.
Construction: 28 Points of 30 Possible
The draw of the cigar was pretty open, giving the whole cigar burn time of 28 minutes. Each puff of the cigar seemed like a 1/4" of cigar was gone.
The wrapper was nice and reddish brown. Only a few small veins in the wrapper. The cap cut easily but was attached well.
Overall a spectacularly constructed cigar other than the little bit of open draw, which I don't find a huge problem if it doesn't effect burning in the mouth and throat which this one did not.
Flavor and Aroma: 30 Points of 45 Possible
Let me start this off by saying I have had this cigar almost 2 weeks in my humidor from delivery, so it is pretty ROTT as far as time goes on smoking cigars. With that being said, it was fairly rough around the edges as far as taste goes, and there wasn't much smoothness nor a lot of complexity that has been able to build over time.
The strength of the cigar is a medium plus, which is to be expected coming out of an AJ Fernandez factory.
The flavors of the cigar that I got were as follows:
Pre-light Draw - I got some heavy tobacco, leather, and raisin flavoring out of the pre-light draw.
First Third - This was a punch of earthiness, as well as barnyard hay and some oakiness.
Second Third - The second third of the cigar was less barnyard hay, but still the earthiness, as well as the oak flavor, now charred, mixed in with some hints of rough dark chocolate at the end of the second 1/3. Peppery addition on this third as well about halfway through that carries and gets stronger as the cigar moves on from here.
Last Third - The last third is very similar to the second third, but without the chocolate and more pepper and more pepper added as it works its way to the end.
There was no burning in the throat, or on the tongue, other than the pepper that grew in the cigar. I would of thought with it burning so fast that I would have gotten some, but there was not.
Summary
I think this cigar was a ROTT casualty! I can see this cigar building into a great cigar with a little time in the humidor. The construction of the cigar other than it being a little open of a draw, was spectacular. I will 100% be revisiting this cigar in the future with some rest time on it. I think the next one will be a much more solid tasting cigar with that rest time on it!
