"Blessed be the man who invented smoking, the soother and comforter of a troubled spirit, allayer of angry passions, a comfort under loss of breakfast, and to the roamer of desolate places, the solitary wayfarer through life, serving for wife, children, and friends." -Unknown
The El Rabo del Toro is a collaboration between Julian Sued & Xaxhi Bobi (owned by Bob de Goede, who used to be a cigar box maker). The name Xhaxhi is Albanian for "uncle," which de Goede was given after working at a mine in Albania.
Very attractive cigar that has a mostly smooth, marbled and dry wrapper. One of the seems is a bit loose though. A long "wick" from the cap is a nice visual touch.
Cut well with a straight cut. A peppery aroma and sweet cold draw.
Lighting and Burn: 14 Points of 15 Possible
Lit well with a single jet Zippo (customized by Herfcast Customs). Ash fell at around 1" and is a medium grey with minimal amount of flaking. The burn held mostly straight throughout the smoke. No relights and an average output of smoke.
Construction: 26 Points of 30 Possible
A small section of the seem on the wrapper was a bit loose from a small crack near a small vein. The draw is nice and clean. The cap held throughout the smoke.
The body is firm with a slight give... not soft and not hard.
At about the first third marker the wrapper split (near the crack at the seem mentioned earlier). I was afraid to take the band off, but it was fine and held together after that.
The wrapper did become brittle and flaked at the end.
Flavor and Aroma: 41 Points of 45 Possible
1st Third - Smooth medium profile with a hint of coffee to start and retrohale with hints of spice and cedar.
2nd Third - Coffee fades away and some pepper comes in stronger on the retro.
Final Third - Some bitterness crept in so I did a purge. After the purge the bitterness went away and the cedar and pepper returned. The retro is much stronger at this point.
Summary
Thanks to Otis for this one! I thought overall this was a good medium to med/full smoke. I love the look of a marbled wrapper and the added visual of the "wick" off the cap was cool. The flavors were good with a couple of small transitions but overall pleasant all around. I don't know the price on these but I'd probably grab a couple to try again!
