Welcome to another Member sponsored Geek Critique generously sponsored by our member Cfickter (Chuck). The cigar provided for this round is the RoMa Craft Tobac Maquette La Maestranza.
"Maestranza" is loosely translated as "the people who are around you helping". And RoMa Craft owes much of their success to the "people who are around you helping", so the brand decided to honor them with this new cigar. The Maquette La Maestranza that we are reviewing is a Petit Gordo and actually the prerelease to this new line which will have three (3) sizes, but the Petit Gordo is NOT going to be part of the regular production. It has a foot ribbon rather than a band. Only 8,000 cigars of this size were produced.
RoMa Craft Maestranza's starts with a core of tobacco from Nicaragua, Honduras and the Dominican Republic. That core is then covered inside a Brazilian binder and finished with a Mexican San Andres wrapper (but a lighter-colored version).
The RoMa Craft Maquette La Maestranza has a dark Mexican San Andres wrapper, no actual band but a ribbon around the foot representing the Spanish flag. The cigar had a nice feel to it, Sniff test hinted of leather and general earthiness. Pre-light draw hinted at a little bit of pepper.
Lighting and Burn: 15 Points of 15 Possible
This cigar lit up easily and burned evenly throughout the smoke. The burn line stayed sharp, and the ash held on for over an inch at a time. The draw was slightly tight offering a little resistance but I didn't mind. No need to re-light and it put of an average amount of smoke.
Construction: 26 Points of 30 Possible
Small in size but big on the construction side. This cigar was well wrapped. No veins, not oily, generally smooth and clean. The cap cuts easily and cleanly. The overall stick was packed fairly dense, consistent from foot to head which I think contributed to the draw despite being slightly tight.
Flavor and Aroma: 40 Points of 45 Possible
Usually I'll break down into thirds but due to the size I really only had two halves. The first half of the cigar offered a bit of peppery spice and leather. The second half of the smoke, things settled down a bit and became ever so slightly sweet but the spice was still there. This was definitely a medium to full cigar and I got a bit of a buzz/hit near the end.
Summary
Thanks to Chuck and Briesq for allowing me to participate in this month's geek critique. I thoroughly enjoyed this cigar from start to finish. Definitely adding it to my wish list - I know this will post after the holidays but hope everyone had a great Holiday season!
