Welcome to another Cigar Geeks Critique of a vitola provided to us by our friends at BestCigarPrices.com. Up for review this time is the Prodigy by Rocky Patel in the Torpedo vitola. A special thanks goes out to Bryan (metalhead y cigarguy) for setting this one up.
The Prodigy had a wonderful appearance featuring a dark oily wrapper. It had very minimal veining and had a nice rich tobacco aroma. The cigar had a nice feel to it, and had no soft or firm spots. The cigar cut nicely as the cap was well constructed, and had a nice pre-light draw. This cigar looked almost too good to smoke.
Lighting and Burn: 9 Points of 15 Possible
The Prodigy lit fairly well using my single torch lighter. The burn was fairly slow, but slightly wavy in the first inch. As the smoke progressed the burn became very uneven several times. This uneven burn required me to touch up the cigar three different times to help even it out. The ash on this cigar wasn't the best I've seen, but the dark gray ash did hold on for more than an inch at a time. This cigar also put off voluminous amounts of smoke.
Construction: 27 Points of 30 Possible
The construction on this cigar was pretty good. The only issues I had with the construction was the uneven burn I experienced. There were no issues with the cap as it cut well, and the wrapper had no defects either. The initial draw was slightly firm as I only cut a small portion of the cap. Once I was about an inch in I had to cut the head slightly more to open up the draw. After my second cut the draw was nice and smooth throughout the remainder of the smoke.
Flavor and Aroma: 33 Points of 45 Possible
The Prodigy was a very hearty smoke. Though listed as a medium to full body cigar; to me it felt more like a straight forward full body smoke. While enjoying this cigar I detected earthy and woody flavors as well as lots of pepper, and hints of toast. This cigar definitely had some kick to it, and it was an enjoyable smoke throughout.
Summary
Overall the Prodigy was a very good cigar. It had a great looking appearance, pretty good construction besides the unfortunate burn issues, and it had some nice complexity with the flavors, which also had some kick behind it. This cigar was aged 83 days in my humidor, and I enjoyed it for approximately 90 minutes.
For a house blend cigar; as this cigar is exclusive to bestcigarprices.com, it was very well done. Unlike some house blend cigars this line of cigars uses long fillers and could no way be considered a "second" and/or "alternative". Rocky Patel and bestcigarprices.com have done well with this cigar.
