Welcome to another Cigar Geeks Critique of a vitola provided to us by our friends at BestCigarPrices.com. Up for review this time is the Prodigy by Rocky Patel in the Torpedo vitola. A special thanks goes out to Bryan (metalhead y cigarguy) for setting this one up.
This cigar has an oily sheen with a milk chocolate wrapper. Very bumpy with raised veins. Pre-light draw is a grassy note with a coco undertone. A grassy smell off the foot and barnyard smell off the wrapper.
Lighting and Burn: 10 Points of 15 Possible
Cigar lit well and produced a thick smoke. Ash was light gray to white. Ash was extremely flakey and barely held a half inch. Burn was uneven throughout the entire cigar and required multiple touch-ups. It developed a tunnel right down the center around the halfway mark.
Construction: 20 Points of 30 Possible
Rather ugly wrapper with raised veins and bumps. One soft spot under the band. Cigar feels rather light for its size. Cap is uneven. Being a torpedo I clipped very little off of the cap and tested the draw. The draw was very loose for as little as I clipped.
Flavor and Aroma: 25 Points of 45 Possible
1st third was decent with a mild spice of nutmeg and a hint of cinnimon with a bitter chocolate undertone. 2nd third the spice disappeared and a leather flavor developed with a charred wood undertone and an extremely bitter burnt grass taste. Final 3rd more of the leather and bitter burnt grass taste but now with a metalic undertone. I had to put it down at the 2 inch mark due to the unpleasant flavors.
Summary
Cigar rested at 65% humidity for 45 days. Cigar was on the lower medium strength. I believe the tunneling was do to the filler having a twist in it. Due to the extremely flakey ash, extremely uneven burn, and the very unpleasant tastes after the first third, I would not recommend this cigar. Hopefully I just got the bad one out of the box and my fellow reviewers had a more pleasant experience.
