This cigar was enjoyed with Coca-Cola with ice

Pre-Light: 18 Points of 10 Possible

Smooth box pressed wrapper with minimal veins.  Firm, almost hard to the touch and no soft spots.  Good heft.  Nice pre-light aroma of aged tobacco.  With a nice clean snip of the toothy wrapper cap with my trusty Xicar lighter, off we go to smoking....

Lighting and Burn: 13 Points of 15 Possible

After a nice toast of the foot, this cigar easily lit and initially gave off massive amounts of standing smoke.  The smoke subsided a bit but still gave off good plumes of aromatic smoke, which I like. It never went out, but I was also puffing like a madman because of tasty flavors.

Solid white ash that fell off in 1-2 inch chunks and never let go until coaxed off.

Here is where there was a small problem - the burn tunnelled somewhat - not so bad that I had to keep correcting but never fixed itself either.  I really had to watch this and I would contribute this to the toothiness of the wrapper.

Construction: 28 Points of 30 Possible

Overall, construction was what you expect from a Padron - high quality.

This cigar had a nicely rolled cap and while I could see the seams of the wrapper (which I was afraid might be a problem), it never unraveled or cracked.  Once again, this was an advantage to the thick maduro wrapper.

The initial draw was a bit tight.  After about 1/2", it opened up but was never what I would call a loose draw.  Still required a bit of puffing to get a nice draw of smoke.  This might have made the tastes a little off.

One thing I did like is that the cap stayed firm throughout the smoke.  I tend to really chomp on the cap and it stayed nice until the end.

Flavor and Aroma: 32 Points of 45 Possible

This cigar is packed with flavors and is very complex.  Unlike most maduros, there are many distinct changes throughout the smoking experience.  That's not to say that the wrapper does not impart a lot of flavor--- it does.  It's just that the filler seems to compliment it.

First 1/3: Full bodied taste of coffee, some light spice and mushroomy flavors.  There was a slight harshness if smoked a little too fast, needed to slow down.

Second 1/3:  Transitions into a med-full bodied cigar, with smooth chocolate and leather flavors.  A slight sweetness with the occasionally sharp bite of spice.

Last 1/3:  Transitions again into a med/med-full with the return of that rich, earth taste.  The finish became dry and little salty until I had to set it down.

Summary

Overall, this was an excellent cigar.  The Padron line as a whole is always consistent and flavorful and the '64 Anniversary does not disappoint.  While not quite the cigar as it's '26 cousin, this one is rich and complex, the flavors were very interesting and never got too overpowering or distracted you with too much punch.  While I usually don't smoke a lot of maduros, this one is too good to pass up.
The sign of the premium cigar for me is the smoking experience.  This one was a joy to smoke, with the minor (and I mean minor) exception of a slightly tight draw and small tunneling issues.
I would reach for this cigar at any time-- in fact, I would never say no to a Padron.  Go out and get one of these - you will not be disappointed.
