Dark, oily, veiny, slightly bumpy appearance. Toothy maduro wrapper. Firm, with no apparent soft spots.
Good pre-light draw with an earthy, slightly sweet taste. Cut very clean with a Xikar cutter.
Lighting and Burn: 13 Points of 15 Possible
A perfecto, with a small foot. Once lit, fairly even burn with only 1 correction needed towards the beginning of smoking. Several times the burn got slightly wavy but corrected itself each time. Solid, light gray ash with some black specks. Consistent 1 - 2" ash. Very good volume of smoke.
Construction: 27 Points of 30 Possible
At beginning, once past the small foot, slightly tight draw but nothing too severe. Overall a good drawing cigar. The wrapper held up well due to the thick Broadleaf. Surprisingly lighter "heft" for such a firmly packed cigar.
Flavor and Aroma: 31 Points of 45 Possible
The first third started out with flavors of chocolate, vanilla, earth and coffee. The second third, more leather and less chocolate but fairly consistent. The last third, some spice, not black peppery, more of a clove or other strong spice.
Throughout, you get a lighter body due to the milder blend, but other times you get a stronger taste due to the maduro wrapper.
Clean aftertaste with a light mouth feel and a light finish. Sweet, almost pipe tobacco like aromas.
Summary
Overall, this cigar had a smooth, earthy taste that I enjoyed over the usual spicy cameroon wrapper of the AF Hemingways. The combination of the milder blend and maduro wrapper made for a rich taste, yet milder than you would expect. If you are looking for a heavy bodied complex cigar, this might not be it. But for a smooth tasting, consistent cigar from beginning to end, this is for you. I would recommend it.
