Title: Thompson's Cigar
Post by: dddddmorgan on 08/23/2011 05:16 PM
As some of you might know I am a relative newcomer here and in my enthusiasm I found Thompson's right off the bat (unfortunately long before I found all of you).

I will no longer do business with Thompson's and here's why in a chronological order:

1. I placed an order with Thompson's on Thursday.

2. The following Tuesday I received a call from Thompson's confirming my order and shipment that afternoon. Included was a "gift" for joining their monthly club.

3. During this phone call I did my best to stay plesant and inform them "I don't want to join any club."

4. Wednesday morning my order finally shipped (almost a week after being placed).

5. Thursday I log into Thompson's to check the order status and I am still enrolled in said club. A phone call follows, language gets more direct but still polite.

6. Saturday, checked on order status (expected a tracking # and of course there isn't one), still enrolled.... Okay, now I've lost my patience, phone call follows. No bad language but I inform them that I have an Uncle who is a less than reputable lawyer... Status now reads "inactive, no shipments."

There you have it. Perhaps some of you are in love with Thompson's but they won't get any more of my money. In the following weeks I have found a plethora of merchants with much better customer service and much less "underhandedness."

P.S. Thanks to all the folks who recommended various online merchants to me.

P.P.S. Curses on the sick one who pointed me to Cigarbid!!   :lmao:

I don't think any of us here are in love with Thompson's.

You are learning what most of us already know about their "customer service'.

never again, I did partake in their 4/5 pack frenzy (I cant remember). I picked up the highest priced sticks they offered for cheaper than i could have else where. Too bad one of the Padilla Miami torpedoes was split from the band to the cap. but for 20 bucks a 5-er, i couldn't really complain at the time. I've learned to shop better now.

I got hit today with almost an $80 "club" order, I did not think I had joined the club!  After 2 phone calls and speaking to 3 people they are taking the order back and stopping my "membership."

When talking to the last guy he said "Ok, the membership has been stopped, but let me tell you about this 10% off special we are running."   REALLY ARE YOU SERIOUS!!

I only ordered a humi, so how they picked my sticks and kept  my card info is a mystery to me??

Lesson learned I will stick with my usual sources.

 :-)

Before reading about them I made an order this day last week. I am told it has shipped but have no idea where it is as they do not share the tracking number which I find really annoying. I have had the obligatory phone calls saying I have some points I can use on a purchase right now and please join our club. As far as I know I have not joined their club.

Because I do not like their business practices, I will not use them anymore. I am really surprised that they have not read all the negative posts on the web about themselves and tried to change their policies to become a more customer focused outfit

They really could be a good company, but they choose to do business in a way that I would not do.  If you treat BOTL's in a good way they will buy.  First rule of bid-ness!!

My experience with Thompson's hasn't been that spectacular either, but not quite as bad as what some of you have been through.  Maybe it's because all I buy from them are shop floor cigars, like the PDR VLR and a couple other less than $1 sticks like it.

Thompsons probably makes a killing. They stick people with a club order and some probably dont send it back. They do some serious business off their shatty house brands with margins that are way too high. Their introductory deals probably get slammed and they make money off of that. They probably dont spend much in the customer service dept., so there you go.

I've only ordered from them once, it was not a bad experience but I will not order from them again.  Slow shipping and phone calls out the wazoo...for no reason

I buy off their auction maybe once per year. I scored a box of 2005 Liberty's that way ~ 3 years ago.

Just another voice.  I didn't like their their continual phone solicitations and their house cigars were mediocre at best.  Their brand name cigars can be found for much better prices elsewhere.  I cut all of my strings with them and have never returned.

Thompson's:   :barf:

My experience with them wasn't bad. I got the med sized humi and 50 of their house sticks for a decent price. This has been a long time ago and they didn't have a club that I was aware of at the time. After reading this though I will stay away in the future. Looks like I just got lucky.

Oh -- and a reminder to any "Thompson Virgins" reading this -- better get off your ass and call them if you are notified you're getting a shipment from the "Club," or anything you don't want ...

If you wait too long and the Thompson order that you don't want does get delivered --> YOU pay to send it back to Thompson and -- to add insult to injury -- YOU get the privilege of paying Thompson an additional $7-$8 "restocking" fee!  All that gets deducted from your refund automatically.

Over three years ago I was too dumb to know about Thompson's so I asked them to send me a catalog. I have never ordered anything from them but I still get the catalog every once in awhile. I thought JC Whitney was bad about that but they can't hold a candle to Thompson's.

I just placed an order for the PDR Value Line Toro's Sampler and the Factory Over Runs Sampler.  Was going to order the PDR Mega Sampler but Monday they listed it OUT OF STOCK, and NO longer available for purchase.  Sent them 2 emails as to why have a sampler as one of their sale items, and then suddenly list it as being HISTORY.  Tuesday, like MAGIC the "Not available" labels DISAPPEARED, and I got one email saying it was IN STOCK and could be ordered if I called.  Got a 2nd email, as I sent two different inquiries, that said it is back ordered and plans to ship 9/15??  Sent a 3rd request today asking WHICH IS IT????

Seems like they just want to get my money and hope I will wait, or choose something else.  I have never seen a company with so many samplers or even cigars back-ordered with estimated shipping dates on them.  If they are selling all the cigars included in these "back-ordered" samplers in 5 packs and boxes, why can't they piece together a couple dozen of the samplers they are included???  Just seem lame to me, which is why my order dropped down to just the two lowest priced items, and thankfully seeing this thread.

Well, my first $77 dollar order from Thompson went fairly smooth.  The only thing that was not good at all is I placed a small order around NOON on the 24th and it was not shipped until the afternoon on the 25th.  Cigar Bid does that to me every week, but also give me the best cigars around for 2 or 3 times less then anywhere else.  Over a full day to process and send two 15 stick samplers????  And they do provide you with UPS tracking details.  Emailed me this morning with a direct link to my package delivery page.  Still, the have TONS of controversy surrounding their inventory, stuff being offered that is not actually in stock, and TONS of cigar offers back ordered with shipping dates that ALWAYS turn into BACKORDERED offers.  Purchase one of those in advance you may be waiting until Christmas.

Well with my one experience with Thompson's I would say if it only took them a day to ship your order you were lucky.

My order was placed on Friday and didn't ship till Tuesday and since I raised such a stink about being forced into a cigar club that they had to cancel they might screwed me a bit because of the delay and I never received a tracking number.

Anyway, they might have some good buys once in a while but as has been pointed out they have too much inconsistency and are very aggressive in their strong-arm tactics. (Remember I'm a used car salesman)  ;-)
