I smoked a bowl of that freebie Altadis/Sutliff "Molto Dolce" i got a couple of months' ago. It reminded me of my Dad's old Edward's custom blend, maybe just a touch sweeter.

Take a look at the Falcon Pipes might be your thing. I love love love mine the bent stem w/ smooth apple bowl. Smokes so smooth and cool with the way it has the bottom collection bowl. And is very nice that you can pick up just the bowls for about $30+ and they all work on your 1 base! Going to pick up a couple more bowls so I can have a little better rotation in the next few months.
4noggins.com has the base and your choice of bowl for $59.95 and free shipping for $99+. They have a decent selection of Tobaccos and haven't ordered anything that they didn't throw in something free.
Get a cob for 10 bucks and a tin of Frog Morton. I think you'd have a hard time going wrong with that. Cornell and diehl habana daydream and purple cow feature cigar leaf in them. Missouri Meerschaum is probably your best bet for a corn cob.
Bad a bowl of McClelland Vanilla Black Cherry that is at least a couple years old. Smooth and tasty.

Smoking a blend of GH&Co. dark flake with some McClelland blended Nording Beagle in my Nording paneled billiard. The beagle adds a bit of sweetness along with a touch of perique to the darker smokier flavor of the Dark Flake. I was pretty pleased with the outcome.

I tried the free sample (1.5 oz tin) I got in the mail from altidas, Tabac Noir - Sutliff Private Stock. It is pretty good stuff! I guess I'm finding that I am kind of partial to the aromatics for some reason. I guess it's maybe because I can smoke it and the wife likes the smell of it on me. Or maybe because i can smoke it in my truck, and she doesn't gripe about the smoke smell when she gets in.

I picked up some pipe tobacco samples from Finck's a while back to fill out an order. At first there was only one I thought was any good, so they were jarred and left to rest. My patience is being rewarded. With a little age, they are turning into a decent smoke. I had a bowl of Sir Winston and thoroughly enjoyed the Finck's rendition of the English style. Anyone who has spent time around a campfire with stretched hides curing over it will instantly recognize the aroma. The Dutch Cavendish is serviceable but not great. The only caveat with their tobaccos is that you must not puff too much as it gets harsh when allowed to get too hot ... they must be sipped slowly. I think their tobaccos are generally better than the credit given.

That is a beautiful pipe there Sam. The briar looks a lot like my Peterson Std System 312, except I think your bowl is bigger, and of course yours is a whole lot older.
Today I am smoking some McClelland VBC, a nice vanilla black cavendish (once it has some age on int). Might dig out the Dutch Cavendish this evening, which is a gold ribbon cut cavendish that gets quite enjoyable after several months in a jar..

McC wilderness in a pipa croci bent billiard
Another of my own concoctions consisting of GH&Co. Brown Flake rubbed all the way out and blended w/ some McClelland Bombay Extra to make for a very mild English. Burned it in a Brentwood Straight billiard with a tallish bowl. Pretty nice for a calm, warm evening.

Smoking some of the new H&H CERBERUS. Holy Cyprian Latakia this is only my second bowl but as of now this is some of the best tobacco I have ever smoked!

This morning I smoked some Trout Stream, courtesy of Kyle, in my Savinelli. This evening the family is sitting around the camp fire roasting s'mores and shortly I'll be enjoying another bowl of Trout Stream in my Czech unmarked pipe. Good end to a great vacation.
So I started my morning with another bowl of the John Aylesbury Own Mixture, and I have to say that after about 4 bowls of this,I'm really loving it. I really appreciate the way that the Perique comes out in it along with the Virginia, and is flavored nicely by the orientals and Latakia as condiments rather than the main course. A pretty darn good value too.

I just smoked some of the blakin mix in it and being its the first bowl in this pipe, I was totally blown away. Smoked great! I hope it stays this nice after the break in. It came with a carbon layer inside the bowl, don't know if it helped, but the first bowl was perfect. I love this pipe! Great deal too, like 30 bucks.

A buddy of mine smokes one of those, and he likes it pretty well too...
I picked up a Stratford (London, England) estate pipe for cheap the other day. Have been restoring it by hand, and finally got to a point where I could smoke a bowl. Picked up some Old Country English from a local B&M, packed the rather large bowl, and enjoyed a very nice smoke. The pipe is working very well, though it still needs some cosmetic work. The tobacco is fairly heavy on the Latakia, so it made for quite a smokey smoke :-)

Smoking a bowl of GH&Co. Dark flake mixed with a bit of C&D Mississippi Mud. Pretty good, earthy and smoky. I wasn't very impressed on the Mississippi Mud by itself, but blended with some VA it can add some decent flavors.
Just finished a bowl of GH Balkin Mix, also just ordered some MS Mud too, along with some wilderness, Gl Pease Odyssey and some frog morton on the bayou. Looking forward to all

Had a bowl of Nording Hunters Blend Beagle this morning. Got the moisture level right and it smoked nicely in a small bowl. A lot heavier dose of Perique than a lot of Vapers. Still haven't got it all figured out on that one, and it may just not offer that much. Figuring on another round of Wilderness tonight. Gonna try it in the narrower bowl of my Billiard rather than the larger gauge of my Lovat that I had it in last night. I could taste it's promise but I think it has more to offer than I was getting last night. Figuring on a bowl of Kendal Flake for the drive home in the morning.
This mornings first bowl was Chipman Hill from 4noggins. Probably my favorite so far!!
This is great to see a few pipe smokers here. I took a bit of A leave from CG awhile back to explore the world of pipes. Now it looks like ill be able to enjoy cigar talk and pipe talk in the same place. Weeeee
Anyways, right now im smoking some 5 year aged 5100, very tasty, in my Rad Davis dublin/Zulu type shape.

Just spent the last 14hrs cleaning up from a broken overhead water main at work.
Am now relaxing with a bowl of 4yo Solani silver flake in my Sav Caramella Zulu.
Packing a bowl of C&D Mississippi Mud, going to let it set a dry for 30-45 minutes, and toast away. The first bowl I had of the Mud was pretty damn good
Had another bowl of Old Country English last night. The latakia in that blend is quite nice. Tonight I think I will break out the Peterson and finish up the last of my 2 year old McClelland VBC.

I have a Peterson Standard System 312 (smooth, not rusticated). It looks quite similar to the Army 160, but with a p-lip on the mouthpiece. The 312 shank might be a degree or two more upright than yours, but I'm not sure. The bowls should be pretty close to the same size. I think the burl in your briar will have more of a tiger-stripe to it - which I think looks really good. I also like the silver collar on these pipes, I think it adds a nice touch.

It's been a big pipe day... Started this mornning with a nice Sam Gawith St. James Flake in my new Peterson, then later while out running errands a bowl of Sutliffe Man's best Friend. I was really pleased with that one. A nice semi-english with lots of good virginia and burley flavors to go with the latakia. This afternoon when I got home from working at the other house, I stole a bowls worth of C&D Poplar Camp before jarring it up to put away as it came in the mail today. :dancing: It was a nice VAPer, and that stuff's got real potential and should be right tasty after some time. :biggrin:
First bowl this evening was some GH Balkin Mix, and now a smooth puff of GL Pease Odyssey
Had a little bowl of Peterson Irish Whiskey earlier in the day in my new Peterson. Pretty nice. Lots of great tobacco flavors without much in the way of a discernible top dressing. Just mellow and flavorful tobacco. I was a bit afraid it might be a bit too much in the Aro vein, but it didn't strike me as being aromatic at all. :biggrin:
Nice bowl of H&H Anniversary Kake. Nice flavor but surprisingly mild bodied.
Just picked up some Samuel Gawith Blakin Flake from my local B+M, rubbed a bit out and loaded it a new black ebony pipe. This is some DAMN FINE balkin smoke!!
Had an aro blend from the local B+M and while decent, I think I'm more likely a non-aromatic pipe smoker.
Just lit up a bowl of Dunhill Nightcap and though I am a new pipe smoker, this is by far some of the tastiest stuff I've ever smoked. I can't imagine it getting much better than this.
Starting my day with some GL Pease Odyssey, which is getting better and better with time, a super flavor bomb for the morning

Bowl of Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake on the drive in to work this morning. A very solid reliable smoke as always.
Once again, filled my McKenzie Dart mini with some super-sweet Wilderness. Loving this smoke, and the Frog Morton OTB. Good smokes
Currently enjoying a bowl of Old English in my restored Stratford estate pipe. This tobacco is a blend of va, burley and latakia that is mixed and sold by a gentleman at one of my local B&M stores. I don't know what he does with it - maybe it is just very well aged - but it is a highly enjoyable smoke. Mellow and very tasty, and very little tongue bite as long as you don't puff on it too much. It's good enough I would even give up my aromatics for it. Yum!
Finished a bowl of Lane Limited's Light Virgina (MV-1000) mixed with their Light Burley in my MM Corn Cobb General. It made for a very good smoke. About to light up some Golden Dansk in my Monarch 1037c poker.
Decided to light up a nitecap bowl of H&H Cerberus with a glass of Ron Zacapa Centenario 23. Awseome combo!
Cerberus definately has my vote for pipe tobacco of the year!

Today I got to smoke some 12 year old Butera Kingfisher that my coworker had. It was amazing. The blend is made up of Virginia, Perique and Burley, and the Perique is more dominant in this blend than in most of the others I've smoked. It was spicy, nutty and extremely rich. Awesome, awesome, awesome.

Had a bit of Hearth and Home Louisiana Red earlier. A pretty good smoke but the Virginia could stand to be just a bit deeper... Still a nice VaPer blend without any bite to it.

Tonight I had friend over and we hung out in the man cave smoking pipes and listening to some Stevie Ray Vaughan. I had some MV-1000 and Light Burly mix in my Peterson Squire Bulldog followed by a bowl of Frog Morton on the Town in my Savinelli 645 Bent Apple. It was a great evening of pipe smoking and conversation.

Good start to my day off...a fresh bowl of SG Balkan Flake in my Medico Apollo, heading to my local B+M in a bit, then home to play in the shop...with more tobacco..
Started my morning with some C&D Bayou Morning in my Nording and a bowl of Peterson Irish Whiskey after lunch in my little knock around acorn.
Todays line up consisted of some Frog Morton OTB, some SG Squadron Leader and my latest bowl was a custom blend my wife picked up from my favorite B+M, The Smoke Stack. A Pressed flake style Virginia mix, I think. Pretty damn good smoke day, I will finish this sunday with a cigar though, grilling some steaks first!
Going to light up some Old World Classic Cake that ilovetobacco hooked me up with.
I had me some McClelland's Red Cake in my Omar King poker.
Burned a bowl of Escudo this morning early, and kicked it old school with a cob full of Half and Half on the drive into work.

On the ride home from work I had some McClelland Legends in my Ukranian Briar. VERY nice smoke so far. And now I'm starting a sweet, full bowl of McClellands Wilderness in my MacKenzie Dart mini.
Just finished a bowl of Mac Baren Highland blend in my Wild Honey London Made pipe. It was a pretty good smoke. Next up is some Mac Baren 7 Seas in my Peterson Squire Bulldog.
Smoked a bit of Stokkebye's LNF yesterday morning while I listened to the previous nights Dodger Game, and burned a little bit of Escudo in my acorn on the way to work this morning. Oddly enough, or maybe not, I prefer the Luxury Navy Flake. looking forward to this evening, I should have a few odds and ends along with some FVF being delivered today. :dancing:

Well, Cerberus has been on my radar for a couple of weeks now, a few people recommended it. So, I packed up some wilderness in my trusty Ukranian briar and ordered a tin of H&H Cerberus. This should be good!!
Getting ready to go outside for a bowl of something... not sure yet. Either a mix of Mac Baren 7 Seas Royal with Lane Limited RLP-6, or Lane Limited MV-1000 mixed with some Lane Limited Burly Light. :confused:
Either way it will be a good smoke!
Update: went with the non-aromatic choice. It's just me, my pipe, the cool night air and the ocean waves in the background.

Cleaned the weapons today, so lit a bowl of Dutch Style Cavendish to fill the un-busy moments.
BTW, if you are tired of dirty winchester and remington range ammo, try American Eagle ... your range store might sell the same thing in a white "Federal" box. It's inexpensive, accurate enough for the range, and doesn't leave a ton of crap behind.
Started my Memorial day morning with some GL Pease Odyssey, some rich Italian roast coffee and my claw hammer banjo on the front porch, watching the new lab run around, puffin and pluckin, a good start to any day.

Lately I've been smoking a lot of McClellands Legends, Wilderness and H+H Cerberus, to and from work and pretty much all the time. So this mornings blend is Samuel Gawiths Squadron Leader. A very nice change, smooth and clean flavors.
I've about concluded I must be a VaPer Junkie... Started this morning with a bit of Escudo in my little acorn.
I scored this unsmoked Italian briar on ebay, in the shape of a cows head... Antlers, eyes and all, very ugly, but it had a lot of wood meat on it. Today I decided to carve it up, get rid of the bovine look. It turned out much nicer than I thought it would, pics soon, but I was so happy I loaded up the last of my Wilderness and torched her up. Tasty.
Today I had a bowl of Westminster by G.L. Pease. 'Twas excellent.
Popped an old tin of Mac Baren's HH Mature Virginia ... moisture seemed right so I packed in an also ancient Peterson 264 heavily blasted p-lip Canadian and smoked it. Quite tasty I must say.
Worked the last 26 days without a day off, so my boss said to take tonight and tomorrow night off. :dancing:
Had a great ribeye dinner and now for some 6yo SG FVF and a little rum to kick off the night.
Finished off a bowl of Black XX,Great as always.

Well, like cigars, tastes and preferences in pipe tobaccos vary, but like you, I'm not much of a fan of aromatics, although I will sometimes fill the pipe with a tobacco with some lightly flavored casing.
I tend to gravitate toward Virginias -- I particularly enjoy flakes, but they can be a bit difficult to master. If you feel especially adventuresome, get some Dunhill Flake -- a good flake to start with, but there are many other great ones. Lots of info on line too, such as what pipes work best, the various preps for flake, packing techniques, etc.
One readily available and reasonably priced VA is Mac Baren's HH Mature Virginia -- it comes in a 3.5 ounce tin and larger. I am smoking some now -- it's been in my rotation for years.
It's important to note that Virginias must be sipped very slowly or they will bite like a junkyard dog. I find it helps to place a pipeful of tobacco (rubbed if flake) aside for some minutes to dry a little (until the strands no longer stick together when pinched), use a tall bowl pipe and don't pack too tight.

This morning, I had a bowl out of a sample of Stokkebye's Golden Dansk, that got thrown in on my last order. A little bit mild, but very nice sweet mellow flavor, and a nice aroma.
I really enjoyed the Golden Dansk. It's great for lite smoke.

Toby, a couple tips about a Flake Tobacco -- hope this helps :-) .
There are three main ways to prepare flake tobacco for smoking. Flake smokers tend to make a ritual on doing that prep, but I'll just cut to the chase here.
Once you've pulled strips of tobacco from the flake and then rubbed the flake out into strands (takes 1-2 flakes, depending on size of bowl). I pull those ribbons into pieces again, but how much you rub it out is based on your preference. Most flakes require some airing out time to dry a bit until the strands no longer clump together when pinched (I'm smoking University Flake now, it applies to every can of this stuff that I've popped). How long you let it dry depends on the freshness of the tobacco tin and the ambient humidity of your room, as well as your dryness preference. Proper drying the flake will greatly reduce relights.
Flakes, Virginia Flakes in particular, require some finesse (some say respect) when smoked or they will bite you like a junkyard dog. They can also get so hot (especially with lots of relights on wet tobacco) that the steam given off from doing that will burn out the roof of your mouth and tongue -- very bad. Flakes must also be smoked very, very slowly to avoid either of these aforementioned issues.
I tend to chuckle when reading some reviews on Virginia or mostly Virginia pipe tobaccos where failure to follow protocol (with certain adjustments for personal preference) ruin the smoker's experience, who then blames the tobacco for it :sad:

Eric does a good job demonstrating things, but he hardly mentions one very important aspect ... many pipe tobaccos and most Flakes benefit from -- and often require -- proper drying prior to smoking.

Paul, nothing is quite like SG Black XX, but you might also like Gawith and Hoggarths Large Cut Dark Twist XX Plug (very hard to find now) and Gawith, Hoggarth & Co's Dark Flake (offered in bulk by the ounce, in either unscented or the more-English-like scented versions). Also, if you haven't tried it yet, you might enjoy SG Brown No. 4.

I was a little bit disappointed by the Sunday Picnic. I thought it was ok, a quality tobacco to be sure, but it was a little light for my taste and I thought it got a little ashy tasting toward the bottom of the bowl. :confused:

Agreed, it is after all a rather simple, yet sophisticated blend,a light VA/PER/Izmir English. But I love VA/PERs and I also like Orientals, so Sunday Picnic suits my tastes quite well.
After sampling some more bowls of Sunday Picnic, I've noticed some definite differences in how Sunday Picnic smokes in various pipes. It did not require drying (the moisture of the flakes in the tin I got was near perfect) and seems to do best using the fold and stuff method when smoking it in a taller bowl.

Just curious are you importing that yourself from a UK/EU tobacconist, buying and/or having it bought for you duty free while traveling ...or?
As I may have stated this before, been a while since St. Bruno AFAIK is still not available in USA. IIRC, it's a Lakeland and as such has a bit of the classic Lakeland District flowery soapiness (for me a very little of that goes a long way).
Something readily available in this country though, has "some" similarity to St. Bruno, but somewhat milder and is relatively inexpensive is the Erinmore Mixture. Erinmore also makes a Flake which I cellar/stock.
As for me, still on the folded & stuffed Erinmore Flake kick today.

As I may have stated this before, been a while since St. Bruno AFAIK is still not available in USA. IIRC, it's a Lakeland and as such has a bit of the classic Lakeland District flowery soapiness (for me a very little of that goes a long way).
Something readily available in this country though, has "some" similarity to St. Bruno, but somewhat milder and is relatively inexpensive is the Erinmore Mixture. Erinmore also makes a Flake which I cellar/stock.
I don't know about everyone else, but I have gotten some from a certain (MR.) that has some (Snuff). I prefer the flake to the ready rubbed, and have a pipe dedicated to St. Bruno, Capstan, and Condor. And your right that a little Lakeland goes a a long way.
Took one of the dogs for a 1.5 mile walk around the park this evening after work and smoked a bowl of Mac Baren 7 Seas Royal mixed with Lane Limited RLP-6 in my Czech basket pipe.
I'm currently sitting in the man cave smoking my Savinelli 645 Bent Apple with some McClelland Frog Morton On the Town.

trying out the fold and stuff with some Irish Flake. the flavor is much deeper but I need practice. oh, in Plip System.
Today, it's Musket Blend from Jack (1776 Tobacco Co., Div. of Sterling Tobacco). Breaking in a Savinelli Natural twin-bore Lovat.
I'm on my 3rd or 4th bowl of a new Mac Baren's --- "HH Old Dark Fired" (a Burely and Virginias flake). It's all the buzz now. Oddly, it's more like an English blend, but there no Latakia in it at all ... I'm still not sure what I think of it LOL. Seems Mac Baren's sold out of North America's first allocation but then decided to "reroute" distributions originally targeted for the rest of the world to North America so it's still currently available ... but when this batch sells out, due to the production process, we won't see it again until the latter part of 2013.
i got the "Froggy Went A Courtin" sampler today. so i'll be checking those out tonight and the next few days.

Mac Baren's HH Matured Virginia is a favorite of mine as well. I had run out and just got a whole pound bag of it (smokingpipes.com has the lowest price BTW) ... all I can do to keep it sealed (I need to get some more mason jars first and have been putting it off).

smoked some Frog Morton Across the Pond in a Peterson Rock of Cashel B10. its my favorite pipe and my least expensive pipe. the froggy was not bad.
Today, I tried cube cutting (something I haven't done in quite a while) a couple flakes of the Mac Baren HH Old Dark Fired and then gravity fed the tobacco into a Lorenzo 1/4 bent chimney briar. This has made quite an improvement. Much more enjoyable.

Good idea.
Your Mark Twain set are two of Peterson's high-mid/high end offerings. My Petes are all quite old, but I have heard quite a few people complaining about Peterson quality going down hill -- and the Petes they are referring to seem to be all machine-made, low end lines -- where one should expect lower end quality in engineering, finish, fills, etc.
I think, when buying a brand new pipe (especially an expensive one) and since there are marked differences in each (even in the same shape/line), it's prudent to be able to hold it in your hand and to inspect it carefully prior to purchasing.
This evening I'm enjoying a bowl of Cornell & Diehl Old Hollywood in my Wally Frank ohm paul pipe. Got this baccy from mike.casey and its really good.

I took your que and have a small tin coming along with a much over due pipe rack from cup a joes I think. I stop buying nonessentials about this time of year so it's the last order most likely.

Glad you are getting some now -- Mac Baren may run out and when this batch sells out, they say that because of the time it takes to make it, there won't be any more until mid-2013.
I think you'll like it. It really improved after the tin had been popped for a while (or jar it). Smokes best for me cube cut and gravity fed. It was also good to see that the tin is 100g (3.5 ounces) so it's not so bad price-wise -- quite a few flakes in there.

The other night I had a bowl of Mac Baren Scottish Blend Mixture that a friend had picked up in a little store in Scotland (of all places, huh). Not sure if the blend is the same that we have available here. This stuff smells fantastic in the pouch, and tastes as good. Smells of clover honey, and has a similar sweet taste when it burns that melds really nicely with the tobacco flavors. I'd say the va in the blend has some age on it for sure. It paired very nicely with a finger of Sailor Jerry.
Smoking some more of Jack's (Sterling Tobacco) Country Store Natural. Glad I packed it in a Peterson Meer ... now I can refill it with more after the pipe cools. ;)

Earlier this evening I had a bowl of Samuel Gawith Skiff Mixture in my Missouri Meerschaum pipe. Just popped open the tin and it was really good. Definitely something I would buy. Thanks for the tin Kyle I appreciate it.
Skiff is good stuff. I'm partial to orientals as condiments, especially Izmir. Skiff is also sold in bulk by the ounce ($4-$6 an ounce, depending on where you get it and how many ounces you buy). I've been mixing my own recently -- Virginia and a bit of C&D Izmir -- I like it a lot.

Ahh ... if you know someone overseas, it's easier to get tobacco labeled as a "gift" package, but IIRC, laws prevent overseas vendors from selling and shipping tobacco products to the States.

i was reading some desciptions of Nording pipe tobacco and decided to mix some flake and ribbon together myself. i like it much better.
old dark fired chunks and mature virginia are pretty good.
I don't usually "mix" blends, but while I like some oriental blends, others, well not so much. This Virginia & Izmir works better than I actually expected.
I have a tin of ODF and some HH Matured Va open, so I'll give your "blend" a try ;)
Smoking up my samples of Finck's tobacco lately.
Last night I smoked some Danish Black and Gold (a ribbon cut) in my old MM corn cob. It is better now than when I first bought it over a year ago ... a middling tobacco that is pretty decent after a year in the jar. It smells and tastes of rich sweet vanilla. The black cavendish is not too strong. And there is no tongue bite as long as you don't hurry it. But in the last third of the bowl, it got a lot of charcoal taste, so I just emptied at that point. Still, if you like vanilla, this is not bad at all as long as you don't mind waiting a year.
Tonight, a bowl of Dutch Style Cavendish (another ribbon cut) in my Country Gentleman MM cob. I am seriously considering just tossing the rest of this. Even after a year in a jar it still is harsh and bites the mouth and tongue no matter how slow I puff. The tobacco doesn't really have any taste, probably because I can't taste anything through the tongue bite.
My order from SPC (SmokingPipes.Com) came today and based on the cartwheels pipe smokers have been doing over it, I ordered a couple ounces of Lane's 1Q blend. It's a mild aromatic bulk blend that retails for about $4-$5 an ounce, depending on where you buy it and how much you get. Lane's 1Q is one of, if not the largest selling tobacco shop blend in America and often "relabeled" by shop owners. Personally, I'm a Virginia blends guy -- not much of an aromatic smoker, but I'm smoking some now and I have to say that if you're at all into easy smoking aromatics that would be a good all day smoke. It is an awesome choice for anyone new to pipe smoking.
So Armin, give an ounce of this a shot. I'm betting you'll be back for more.
The 1Q name pops up all over the place. I haven't tried it yet, but looks like I will have to add it to the "buy next" list. Thanks for the pointer Rich!
Smoking a bowl of H&H Cerberus...... It's heavy in the Lat, but the Perique, Orientals, Virgina, and Dark fired Kentucky make this such a treat on the tastebuds.
Now that the weather is cooling down this will become a very regular smoke for me.

I like my pipe stems straight or mostly so myself. Just makes it too hard to fish a pipe cleaner down the stem if there is too much bend... :confused:

TBH, I smoke a lot more of the Mav Baren MV, Orlik OGS, Escudo with some Peterson Irish Flake, Pete Univ Flake, McClelland Blackwoods Flake, and some other Virginia blends thrown in than anything else.
I haven't tried GLP JKP, but hear good things. If you enjoy Oriental blends like I do, GLP's Fog City Selection: Embarcadero is very good, as is C&D Sunday Picnic. I've been smoking a lot of my own blend lately -- Mac B's MV (or some other virginia) with about 25% of C&D Izmir and I'm loving it.
I'm not much of a aromatic fan either. I like the Lane's 1Q well enough -- it's a mild bulk blend and easy smoking, I don't do the goopy heavily cased stuff at all. If your friend likes "heavy" aro's, J.M. Boswell in Chambersburg, PA makes some of the best (or so I hear) --J.M. is also a pipe maker -- but you have to call them -- they're old school and don't do well with internet/Email.

McClelland Tastemaster in my Pete Kinsale xl16 tonight. They say it is a "smooth creamy chocolate flavored aromatic" but I don't taste it. More like bavarian cream, and that is something I enjoy a lot.

I haven't tried GLP JKP, but hear good things. If you enjoy Oriental blends like I do, GLP's Fog City Selection: Embarcadero is very good, as is C&D Sunday Picnic. I've been smoking a lot of my own blend lately -- Mac B's MV (or some other virginia) with about 25% of C&D Izmir and I'm loving it.
I'm not much of a aromatic fan either. I like the Lane's 1Q well enough -- it's a mild bulk blend and easy smoking, I don't do the goopy heavily cased stuff at all. If your friend likes "heavy" aro's, J.M. Boswell in Chambersburg, PA makes some of the best (or so I hear) --J.M. is also a pipe maker -- but you have to call them -- they're old school and don't do well with internet/Email.
I have smoked a number of the Boswell aromatic tobaccos, and they are for the most part quite good. I don't know if I would classify them as "heavy" aro because they are not sticky gooey like some of the Stokkebye, Altadis, or McClelland tobaccos, but they definitely are flavorful and bite free. Boswell's = not goopy as you said, Armin. What I should have said my understanding from others is that most Boswell Aro's are "full aromatic blends" instead of "heavy." I recommended Boswell's since aro lovers I know just praise their blends all the time. The only "bad" thing with Boswell's is that it's best to call in questions/orders.
Smoking some cube cut Mac Baren's Old Dark Fired tonight in a Lorenzo stack.
Got home today to find a nice little package from pipes and cigars. I dried a little '06 Frenchy's Sunzabitches and loaded my Medico Apollo. Very nice tangy tobacco. I've loaded my Digby with some Wilderness to enjoy a bit later.
Some PS Sweet Vanilla. Started out okay, but didn't fare well as the bowl burned down.
smoked some mb old dark fired, mb mature virginia and glp fillmore in three petersons last night. the fillmore is a bit mild for my tastes but pretty good. it got darn bitter at the bottom of the bowl. could have been operator error?

GLP Fillmore needs to be sipped very gently to get through it while coaxing the most (which isn't a great deal) from the blend. It's hard to just sip slowly because the flavors are so -- I dunno -- muted, so one has to fight trying to puff faster and harder to get any real flavors. Fillmore is frustrating. Not for me.
McClelland Blackwoods Flake in a Savinelli Bing. I love this stuff.
I had to try the H+H Frenchy's Sunzabitches again. That is the best pipe tobacco I've had so far. Soooo good!

it's funny. I couldn't do a damn thing with flake to start off with now I find I burn down a bowl if its not flake. it's a process I'm sure but I've gone from one extreme to the next.
my go to right now is MV with a little flake in it. about 50/50.

So far I've only tried 3 aromatics and I've pretty much hated them all until I had the 1-Q. I had C&D's Green River Vanilla and their Apricots and Cream - both were pretty disgusting. I also had their Mild N Mellow which didn't even have a flavor.
I did the only reasonable thing that I could do to determine whether I want to continue trying them - ordered like 8 samples from Boswell's. :biggrin:
I figure if I don't like those, they're not for me.

Rich thought i would like jackknife. just came in from the deck after smoking a bowl fresh out the can. it was darn good with a cup of tea after work. it has a heavy nicotine kick so beware of that if you are like me and don't smoke cigarettes.
compared to 3 p's it is easier to cut and prepare. i find the p's is not as sweet and a little more spicey than JK. drier in flavor and moisture as well. one of these days i will check out the MB Cube.

MB Burley London Blend. I'm using the air pocket method in a Pete LB. what the hell this is a cool way to stuff and it works great. the smoke is pretty nice.

Look, IMO, if you like pipe tobacco to taste like Christmas Cookies or whatever sweet treats they name them after, great. I personally vehemently dislike those. But truth be known, if someone does like those types of aromatics, Boswell's is right up there.

I really like Sunday Picnic. I like Balkans, as long as they have little or zero latakia. I don't care for latakia. I'm not much of a perique fan, either -- perique is like pepper on a fried egg -- just a sprinkle goes a long way for me.
If you want to dip a toe into the English, walk on the milder side and still have a foot in the Balkans, try some Dunhill Early Morning Pipe (EMP) blend. It's somewhat along the line of Sunday Picnic. PipesandCigars.com started selling three Dunhill blends in bulk this week, including EMP @ $5.50 an ounce (less per ounce if you buy more).

Tonight I fired up some Solani Silver Flake in an Ashton billiard.
Earlier today I had a bowl of Nording Blend Labrador Retriever in my Missouri Meerschaum Corn Cob. It's a nice little aromatic smoke if you enjoy aromatics.
MV in various pipes. i read Fred Hanna's new book and the power of suggestion got me wanting to try Wilderness and Legend. of course i ordered the Three Oaks too. you know to make it worth it for shipping and all......:biggrin:

if you have read Pipes And Tobaccos for the last decade you will have read most of it already. it has some unpublished essays as well. reading the mag is what got me interested in the book. its not a bad read though it is a bit pricey for paperback at $23.00.

AFAIK, neither Wilderness or Legends contain any added flavorings. Both are complex blends with hallmark virginias (which, I think, McClelland is known for) that do add some creamy sweetness to the smoke though.
Some more Solani Silver Flake in an Ashton Pebble Grain Apple before bed tonight. I had to review this one on tobaccoreviews.com -- it's one fine smoke -- pricey, sure, but worth every penny.

Solani Silver Flake was one of the first Virginia tobaccos I tried when I started smoking a pipe in '95. It has always been one of my favorites and
I always have a couple of jarred tins in the celler.

This mornings smoke was a bit more Frog Morton OTB in my old Barontini, this pipe makes every smoke better.

love Irish Flake. i have been working on my method with it. if you haven't yet try the fold and stuff in a tall bowl leaving an air gap at the bottom. burns slow and the flavor is bam!

As for Flake Prep, I use the cube cut almost exclusively. I take a flake or two (depending on flake size and the pipe) and I use a knife or scissors to cut 1/8" to 1/16" strips, the cut those strips in cubes. Once the cubes are your preferred dryness (cubes should not stick together when pinched), I gravity feed the cubes into the pipe bowl and sprinkle the left over tobacco bits over the top. Char light then light. Works wonders :-)
Tonight, I fired up some of my blend (HH MV & izmir) in a Barontini canadian after dinner.
Earlier today I had a bowl of a blend I created, which features 1792 Flake, MV-1000 and Light Burley. Not a fan of 1792 Flake so I had to add something to make it enjoyable. Last night I had a bowl of Skiff Mixture. That is an excellent tobacco and is very similar to Squadron Leader.

I think it's just too bold of a taste for me right now in my pipe smoking infancy and I need to blend it with something a bit milder. I got a lot of burning spice in my mouth , even more spice than a really spicy Pepin cigar, when I first tried a quarter bowl to taste. I tried it with 1Q but that didn't really work out. Either that or I'll just sit on it till I'm "ready".

I'd sit on it. Put the flakes in a clean screw top mason jar with a new lid. The Irish Flake will keep forever. In fact, pure virginia blends like that continue to improve with marked improvements at 6 mos. to a year, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, 30 years -- experts say virginias will likely continue to improve beyond that but no one has proven that yet ;-)
Of course, the aging stops and restarts every time you open the jar, just to let you know.

I was jarring a new pound bag of Dan's Limerick today, so I had to sample this stuff. Comes out of the bag in 12 inch flakes folded in half. An outstanding VA/Per; the perique is in there, sweet-spicy but definitely as a condiment, the way I like it. Enjoyed in an Ashton blasted billiard. Recommended.

Last night I popped a tin of McClelland 221B Baker Street Series: Black Shag and fired it up in an Ashton blasted apple.
Black Shag is the tobacco Sherlock Holmes himself stored in a Persian slipper on the mantle and his favorite blend.
Nothing like what I expected. I tastes Latakia up front, bumped by Oriental sweetness and some very good stoved Virginias along for the ride.
The thing is, Black Shag, according to McClelland, is all shag cut Virginias. Quite odd, that. But this is certainly tasty.
This will require further detective work ... the game is afoot!

I tend to rub out a lot of Virginia and VaPer flakes and usually have a little left over when I fill a bowl. As a result I collect all the left overs in a tin. Anyway, makes for a nice Virginia blend that I enjoyed this morning on the way in to work.

I used to rub flakes as well as cut and rub plugs out myself too -- did it for many years that way.
Based on a post by a pipe smoker on another forum, I tried the cube cutting method he wrote about -- and it's now the method I use almost all the time for those tobaccos. I use scissors to cut the flakes into strips lengthwise then cut the strips into cubes 1/8" or a bit larger; but a sharp knife works just as well.
Sometimes, with flakes that separate easily into thin strips, I'll place those strips vertically in the bowl and smoke it that way.
I try to leave a little bit of space at the top of the bowl then sprinkle small pieces of the tobacco from the tin or pouch on the packed bowl and that makes it easier to char and light.

I messed with some G.L. Pease Odyssey last night and some Rattray's Hal O' The Wynd. As VAPers go, I liked HOTW a little less than Sunday Picnic but it was still good. Odyssey was outstanding. I think as a pipe smoker there is a different learning curve with latakia. I had a bowl of Odyssey as my very first pipe bowl, given to me in-store by the local tobacconist and I didn't like it at all. Last night, a couple months into my pipe smoking, I loved it.

A couple others that are quite good include Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe (now sold by the ounce in bulk), which is a virginia forward mild English and McClelland's 221B Series: Black Shag, which is a stoved virginia, but it's flavors reqally surprised me; made for a nice change of pace.
I don't think I'd classify the Sunday Picnic as a Va/Per, since it has a considerable amount of Turkish leaf added to the Va/Per blend. I love the stuff though. I now make my own blend of virginias (most often Mac Baren HH Matured Virginia, I buy pound bags of it, is my go-to; McClelland virginia 2035 works well too, but a bit stronger) with some C&D Turkish Izmir -- about 20-25% of the latter. The virginias and the Izmir are sold in bulk. I've been getting them at Smoking Pipes.com.

Yup, I have some EMP and it is quite nice. I haven't heard of the First Responders. I have a bunch of tins still I have yet to open, one of which is HH MV. I'm mostly working on my tin of Blackwoods Flake when I'm in the mood for straight VA.
i've been smoking some of the GLP TAD i went on last last month. its growing on me. Haddo's Delight today. its funky....
I broke out the Missouri Meerschaum for the first time in a long while and smoked a bowl of Hearth and Home Sunza Bitches. It's a Virginia Perique blend. It's dry in the pouch and smokes mild. Flavor is mostly Burley, I couldn't hardly tell there was any Perique in there. A nice mild smoke, only very lightly aromatic.

For anyone unfamiliar with Dorchester, it's an Esoterica blend of six light Virginias plus Golden and dark Virginias with air-cured leaf and a pinch of Louisiana Perique. It seemed a perfect moisture out of the bag, and since I had half a jar left over, I loaded some up in a Peterson Meer. If you enjoy virginia blends, you really should give Dorchester a try -- damn-freakin'-tastique!

I'm working my way through a bunch of bulk blends I got recently. Tonight, it's bulk Gawith & Hoggarth Bright CR Flake in a straight grain Astley quarter bent panel. A very nice, quality pure virginia flake.
Mixed up a bunch of Dunhill Nightcap with a few pinches of C&D's Star of the East to up the Latakia quotient a bit. Handling nice and tasty in my Amadeus Dublin.

I am getting ready to fire up some SG Squadron Leader in a Giant Scoop. Wish I knew more about this pipe, I love it!
Revisiting an old favorite, Dunhill Early Morning Pipe after a hiatus of more than a few years, one of a number of bulks from a recent order, in a Pipa Croci straight grain quarter bent Dublin.
EMP is still a good blend and high quality tobacco (even in it's Orlik version), a great virginia-forward mild English, it would make a great tobacco blend for a relatively new puffer to dip into English blends.
I moved beyond English blends some time ago, so this will be only an occasional smoke for me.

Having my first ever bowl of Penzance in my recently acquired Peterson Strand. I see now why this stuff is so highly sought after -- this is the best performing tobacco I've ever smoked. Never even a shred of smoking hot even when I intentionally puff hard and fast to the point of gurgle. And the taste straddles that perfect line where you're never quite sure if its VA forward or Latakia forward. Highly complex.

It is indeed. It's definitely cased and most definitely has a bunch of PG keeping it 'wet' but it's really good. The whisky taste is very gentle and it's just a good smooth mild black cav/latakia blend otherwise.

So tonight it's H&H Anniversary Kake, a rather unusual Va/Per where the Perique seems to sing a different tune than normal -- more plum and sweet, much less peppery. Enjoying it in a Brebbia Pura quarter bent cumberland squat tomato. It should age extremely well.

You guess correctly.
The crap will hit the fan soon. Congress is considering bills in both Houses right now to require all internet vendors to apply all applicable taxes based on the billing address of the customer. This, of course, will increase prices for the taxes, but also provide additional increases as vendors pass on the considerable cost of having to incorporate systems to properly level and track more that 75 different local, county and state taxes.
Pipe tobacco and cigars prices should thus rise considerably within the year.
So stocking up now, and in considerable volume (my virginia blends age very well anyway) is exceptionally astute, IMHO.

I _really_ enjoyed the Anniversary Kake last night. It was ultra-wet so I crumbled the cake into fine bits and let it sit in front of my little space heater for about 5 minutes. Then I packed it via the Frank method (which I like to do with very fine/shag cuts) and had one of the best smokes I've had all month. It wasn't too heavy on the perique - citrus-y and flavorful. I only got 1 oz to try, but I'll definitely be cellaring some of this.

Spent my morning by the lake with a bowl of Fat Jacks blend (local B&M blend) in my Czech bent brandy basket pipe. I followed that up with a bowl of Metalhead blend (SG 1792 Flake, Lane Burly Light, Lane MV-1000) in my Czech bent billiard basket pipe while walking on the trail around the lake.
Great way to spend my Presidents day, day off.
I keep going back to the McClelland 221B Series: Honeydew -- a very good virginia! Enjoyed it in an Ashton billiard this afternoon.

With Peterson's it's pretty easy. They were made on the Isle of Man during a specific window of time. Other brands, such as Barling, also made some.
Kiko made a bunch of different ones: http://www.pipedia.org/wiki/Kiko Many of them have a wild animal as the stem logo, so that is a dead giveaway.
Many of these are sold as estate pipes on eBay, often at a reasonable price.

I agree. Too much Perique for me-- and probably too much red virginia as well. I hear it does "mellow out" after aging though. I never bought any -- the McClelland quality is certainly there, but the one ounce sample was enough.
Strange brew today. Smoked a bowl of G&H, from a sample of what was mislabeled as "Dark Birdseye," this was a flake, not a ribbon. I'm guessing it's G&H Dark Flake, now whether it's the scented or unscented, no idea. It did have an herbaceous "essence," though. It was actually pretty good -- I just hope it didn't ghost my Barontini!

Just finished some Hal O' The Wind in my little quarter bent apple. Not a bad Virginia flake, but I'm disappointed that it's not just a little richer. I do think it's considerably enhanced in a smaller chamber.
