So I was able to come across a decent deal on a box of smokes and I thought it might be time to do a blind taste test with some members. Here is how it will work:
- The first 10 members with at least 100 points to reply to this thread will be included in the test.
[li]I will send out the same single unbanded stick to these 10 folks.
[li]You guys smoke it and leave a review here in this thread.
[li]After everyone has had a chance to smoke theirs, we'll try to guess what smoke it is.
[li]The member that guesses it correctly gets a fiver of it. If you really dont like it you can designate it to go to someone else - no replacements.
That's it. Short and simple.

Let me take a look and see if I have more to spare when I get home.
I will step down so a fellow member could try.
So are we getting any hints about this stick? Or could it be any stick in cigardom?
Cigardom sounds like a product for your protection :lmao:
No hints until after you smoked and reviewed it. Once we start guessing what it is, i'll drop hints if no one has an idea.
-Paul
It is. Why try to keep track of which wrapper goes to which stick when you want to take one out of the humi, but wont be able to smoke for a few hours?
Cigardom offers you the perfect way to protect your stick until you've got the chance to smoke! They're strechy and one size fits most, but for the extra big ones, there's MAGNUM size too!

Ok folks. These all went out this morning. A few points:
I did remove the band from the stick, so you might see a blemish on the wrapper due to this. Try to consider that in your review.
Everyone please post your review here in this thread. When the stick is revealed, please also post it in the review section.
Let's try not to discuss what the mystery stick is until after everyone has reviewed it.

Go for it once you get it. I would just rather not have any guessing of the brand until after everyone smokes.
I guess I'm the first one up!
Construction was great, burned even throughout and had an easy draw. The flavor through the first quarter of the cigar resembled tree bark, but not in a bad way; it was a decent flavor. It developed and smoothed out about halfway through and retained the woody flavor. I would say the smoke was medium bodied. The wrapper, on the other hand, was dull without much flavor. In all, I'd give it a 3 1/2.
I will go on record saying I'm fairly certain I've had this cigar before although I don't think I'll be able to identify it.
Exactly how many was there in on this? I figure I wll probably be the last one to review it in that it will probably take the longest to get here.

I just got mine! Wooo!
I got mine today!!!!!! It looks pretty good, nicely rolled and firm. I think Ill smoke it tonight. It came this morning so my girlfriend put it in my humi for me, what a nice girl. :dancing:
Thanks alot Paul, this is a great idea. Im thinking of doing one myself sometime.
Got mine today too.......thanks Paul for doing this, it should be fun.
I got mine as well today! It does look great! Nice dark, firm and toothy wrapper. Good construction. Looks really appetizing. It's a pretty common size, so this one may be very difficult to nail down. I guess it'll all come down to the flavor and whatnot. Should be fun and interesting. I'll try and smoke this tonight and post my thoughts. Thanks again for including me in this Paul!
I got mine Hmmmmmmmmmmm. No clue
Im going to smoke mine tonight
I got the damaged one
Mine was in the mail box....
Nice initial aroma. SLightly veiny wrapper. Cap seems to be in good shape.......
Plan on smoking tomorrow :dancing:
Well, I smoked it. This is going to be hard, it tastes very familiar.
This cigar looked good, it was rolled well with a good pre smoke aroma. After lighting, it started out mild and tasty with a sweet aftertaste. As it burned it became more intense with lots of rich aged tobacco flavor. It had a thick dark wrapper that held up to constant puffing. It tastes like something Ive had before but I cant put my finger on it. It was a little bumpy which made me think it was a short, or mixed filler. After tearing the nub apart, it was a long filler.
I have no idea what this is, however it may come to me. Good luck to all involved, I hope someone wins the fiver. Thanks again Paul, I wont be the one to guess right but I enjoyed it very much.
I think i also smoked it before about 2.5 inches left it fell apart all long filler
Im not going to say anything intill everyone had a chance to smoke but I have narrowed down to 3 brands I think
Sorry guys, I didn't get a chance to enjoy this tonight. I was really looking forward to it, but just didn't seem to find the time to get to it. Maybe tomorrow night. If not, then definitely Sunday. I only work until 3:30 Sunday, so I should definitely be able to fit it in then, by the latest.
Received mine today as well. I had to go to a function tonight, but I did look at it....
Will smoke it this weekend for sure. Thanks again for including me.
.... Sitting here in the middle of my floor surrounded by cigars.... trying to find one in my stash that matches....
I think I've narrowed it down to 2...........
Gonna smoke the ???, then the other 2, and then......
I am so stupid! I got Paul's box, but I forgot about the blind test and thought he bombed me with something so exotic that it had no label. I actually wrote and thanked him and asked him why he took the label off. If I had any shame I'd be embarrassed. Nevermind Paul! I won't be able to smoke it til Monday night.
I should have saved mine for this weekend, but I just recieved a big shipment of cigars so I will be busy smoking all weekend. :dancing:
And thanks for the CG cards Paul, they will come in handy.
Got mine yesterday...gonna smoke tonight.
Smoked mine today....
Nice leathery cigar from light to nub. SLightly spicy. No real maduro characteristics, nor did I taste any real ligero. The dark wrapper was very deceiving to me. I expected some darker tones and maybe some cocoa or dark chocolate hints, but I didn't really get any.
Not a very complex cigar, but generally a good cigar. the draw was very nice. The burn was even, and the ash held well. Kind of a flakey ash with salt and pepper. It did get a bit bitter as I neared the band.
I think I know what it may be............
Smoked mine today - pretty much what everyone else said. That was a pretty good cigar. Started out mild and sweet and moved into a stronger, full bodied smoke. I did have trouble with the wrapper cracking but I'll bet that had a lot to do with it being dry from shipping.
I think I have an idea of what country this came from and on that, I think I know the brand but not the specific line. I'll guess when everyone else does....
Thanks, Paul.
I'm smoking it at this very moment. It tastes good. Especially after 9 days without a smoke. I have no idea what it is. I'm not finished yet.
Well I have absolutely no clue as to the brand. But it was a decent smoke. I'd give it a 3, maybe a 3.5. It didnt have any terrible moments until it got bitter at the end, but did have some nice moments of chocolate and leather in the first 3rd. Nice medium body that wasnt arsekicking.

It's funny how numbers mean different things to different people. A 3 for me is very mediocre but smokeable. I give this one a high 3.5. It lacked a certain star quality that would've made it a 4. I found the end bitter too.
You raise a good point. I guess I look at it like this:
1. I wouldnt finish the cigar. Awful flavor, piss poor construction. May induce gagging. I hope to never give a cigar a 1.
2. I might finish the cigar. Flavor wasnt good, construction wasnt great. May be cheap or overpriced. I wouldnt buy more.
3. I'd smoke the cigar all the way. Flavor was good, construction wasnt awful. I'd smoke them again.
3.5 would be something I'd smoke semifrequently. Flavor and construction are good, but not mindblowing. An everyday kind of stick.
4. I walk away thinking "man, there were some great moments there." I'd like more of these, but its likely they are starting to get a little less afordable.
4.5 is a mighty smoke. Tastes great, burns great. Leaves you wanting another.
5. I've never had one. I've heard 5s are pretty good cigars.
Thats pretty much the way I do it. 3 and 31/2 are where decent cigars are at their make it or break it point. Ive fine tuned my system a little and, in my case anyway, I would look at what I write more than the number. I wish there was a way we could all use the same system, but people see and taste things differently. I think that between 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 is a little fuzzy. I think we are all on the same page with 1-2 and 4-5. I tend to look at the writing and use the numbers more for my own use. I can look through my own reviews and know what the numbers represent.
I've kind of used this system....
1. = Swisher Sweets or equivlelent. Crappy Cigar. Crappy Flavour. Crappy Smell. Would be ashamed to give it away. WOuld never smoke it to begin with.
2. Crappy cigar. lousy flavour, but at least it wasn't suppposed to taste like grape nehi.
2.5 Boring cigar. May have serious construction flaws. Burn will be bad. Nothing to redeem it... wouldn't even store it in the humi for aging.
3. boring cigar. but burned well. Constructed well. Might give it 6 months in the humi to try again.
3.5 good flavours, but had construction issues. 3.5 is reserved for 4's with construction issues. Unless they piss me off they are so bad.
4. Good cigar, fairly complex. Good construction and burn. Good ash.
4.5 Good cigar, VERY complex flavours. Good presentation. near perfect burn and ash.
5. A cigar that makes me wanna say. HOLY s**t THAT WAS A GREAT CIGAR. Graycliff Double Espresso did that for me. I think I may have been too liberal with 5's in the past....
CAn we guess yet?? And do we guess via PM to Paul??
As far as I can tell, there are 6 people that havent smoked theirs yet. Im in no hurry , I have no idea what it is. I have a couple guesses but nothing concrete.
Still have not recieved mine. I will know later today if it arrived in the city. I'm at the cottage now.
Also, Paul is out of town and gets back on Tuesday or Wednesday (I think).
I finally got around to smoking this tonight. I think I'm the eighth member to review it, as far as my count went. To be completely honest, I wasn't too thrilled with this cigar. It was fairly light-bodied and didn't pack a whole lot of flavor. The draw was easy and free-flowing. The burn was very uneven to start off with, but as the smoke went on, it slowly caught up with itself and nearly evened out toward the end. The aroma had notes of cedar, light leather and bread. The little bit of flavor that I did detect included lightly toasted bread, grass, grapefruit, a slight hint of leather and a little bit of chalk. The finish and aftertaste left a stale bready flavor and had a real abrasive and sharp taste. The second half developed a mild chocolate and cream flavor that was fairly enjoyable. The last third was really weird for me, as a really heavy and strong draw suddenly appeared down the middle of the cigar that left a musty, bitter and sharp flavor right on the tip of my tongue. I'd have to rate this smoke either a 2 or a 2.5, and I'm fairly certain I've never had this before. So my guessing will most likely be very fruitless. Thanks, Paul, for sharing this and allowing me to be involved in this blind taste test. I hope my less-than-decent opinion doesn't rain on the parade!
My 4 is very broad. That's why I talk of high 4's and low 4's. My last 3.5, a Red Kiki, would've been a 3 in both your scales.

What does chalk taste like? I hope I never smoked it so I can review it.
I've never smoked bread or leather. Although some of the potroasts my wife made early in our marriage resembled leather.......
I smoked mine on Saturday. I gave it a solid 3.5. Draw was light, but construction was overall very good. Didn't like the flavor at first, but it grew on me. I do have a solid guess as to the brand, but I'll reserve it until SenorPablo says it's OK.

I find that I taste bread and leather on a lot of the cigars I smoke. As for the chalk flavor, Larry, this was really the first cigar that tasted like it had a chalkiness to it. It was a real unique flavor, and one that didn't particularly agree with me. I wasn't too impressed with this smoke. But.......I realized after smoking it last night that the flavors could have been manipulated by the hot wings I ate about a half-hour prior to the smoke. After I broke open a beer about halfway through the cigar, the flavors starting changing a little bit. But I don't think they changed enough to be really enjoyable, though. I mean no offense to Paul, of course. Like I said, I hope my comments of the cigar don't ruin the entire taste test.
Damn, I wish mine would arrive so I get a chance to taste a chalky cigar!

QuoteBob Cordell - 7/14/2008 11:07 AM

Don't get me wrong, here. The entire cigar did not feature a chalky flavor, just portions of the finish and the aftertaste. And like I said, I really think I screwed this one up, because of the meal I had just before smoking this cigar. I think the hot wings really screwed with my palate, therefore blocking and messing with some of the flavors of this smoke. I opened a beer about halfway through, thinking that may help to neutralize my palate. I think it helped a little bit, but I can't be sure of how much.
However it turned out, I can't wait to find out what brand of cigar this was. If it was something I had before, then I'll really know that the wings screwed up my palate. But I really think I haven't had that cigar before. So I don't know where to begin to try and guess what brand this was.
Okey-dokey, mine just arrived in the mail, nicely packaged if I may say so.
I have a guess as to what it is before smoking it. My guess may change after I smoke it though...
Ok, I got to burn mine. The clip was perfect, I nailed it. Dont you just love it when that happens? The pre-light draw was wide open and I guessed it wouldproduce a wealth of smoke, it didnt disappoint on that note.
The first third was somewhat bitter and tasted of nuts and leather. The middle mellowed out and picked up hints of chocolate, maybe like malted milk balls. The burn was still wide open and it did not need one touch up. The last third picked up the bitterness again somewhat and the nutty flavors really came on. I think that may have something to do with such a wide open draw.
Overall it was a pretty good smoke but the bitterness got to me just a bit at the end. I give it a solid 3 stars!
Hey, it was free also, cant beat that!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi guys. I'm back from Maine. What a cool place to visit - not sure I could live there because of the winters, but a beautiful state - at least the area I was in - York.
So how many folks are left to review? I'm glad to see them coming through and for the most part folks did not dislike them.
-Paul
Ok, I smoked mine tonight, and I give it a 3. It had a open draw and produced lots of smoke. The flavors didn't really jump out at me. I too noticed some chocolaty flaver peaking through, but as I said, the flavor just wasn't memorable. It was a decent smoke, not one I would buy, but not terrible. I also noticed some bitterness toward the end. As far as a brand, I really don't have a clue, but I will venture a guess when I hear the word.
Still waiting for mine :-(

How can your honest observations do anything but add to the final results? Few group taste tastes are anywhere near unanimous. As for the wings, next time brush your teeth (and tongue) before you smoke if you think the food will alter your appreciation.
Quoteljlemer - 7/15/2008 12:49 AM
As for the wings, next time brush your teeth (and tongue) before you smoke if you think the food will alter your appreciation.
I never really ran into that problem before (at least, that I know of). I didn't think it was going to be a concern. But now I know, that if I have something as potent and palate-ruining as wings, to try and cleanse my palate as much as possible beforehand. Lesson learned, I guess!
Its also important to cleanse your palate if you have recently smoked crack, as the crack smoke can cause your palate to misinterpret a lot of the nuances of a good cigar.
Snorting cocaine can desensitize your olfactory nerve and make your cigars seem bland.
Also, heroin can affect your taste buds as well. Cigars tend to taste bitter.
Finally, after sniffing glue, it is good to wait at least an hour to allow your palate to readjust after being exposed to the fumes.
Just some advice.......
 :lmao:  :lmao: :-0
Damn, I think the glue on the inside of my nose may have clogged up with the blow I had tried to snort and and fell into my brass crack pipe and then spilled over into my herion in the spoon.
Thats why it was bitter, I'm sure now. I'll watch that from now on...

Yeah, I already knew about the effects of smoking crack on one's palate, but I really underestimated what hot wings could do. Man, am I dumbass!
Okay...I got the cigar today...the package has been opened, no doubt thoroughly inspected, but nonetheless I got it intact and will smoke it tonight...it seems like it does not need humidifying, heck, with all the moisture here this year I could make the whole house plus the backyard a giant humidor...it has been around 70 degrees steady and plenty humidity (70-80%)
Looks like pretty good construction, not too tight, not to loose, toothy cm wrapper, a little bumpy in places, perhaps hiding a few larger veins, and a very nice prelight aroma...a little sweet smelling. Yes, I will smoke it tonight.

I think you might be the last of the participating members in this taste test. Even though this wasn't my favorite smoke of all time, I can't wait to find out what it is!
Can we guess yet? Can We CAN WE CAN WE???
HUH HUH HUH ???
And how do we guess? Here in forum or via PM?? :dancing: :dancing: :dancing: :dancing: :dancing: :dancing: :dancing:
And here is my review. A nice prelight aroma. Fresh sweet cut hay, quite nice. Good construction and a nice even burn. The draw was good, though a little on the easy side for me in that I would have liked a little more smoke with it. Good ash clinging going on here, even in a stiff breeze by the lake. Mildly bitter in the begining, not too bad though, and then that went away for most of the cigar and came back again in the last 2 inches. Hard to describe the taste for me...a little of the hay/grass thing going on for the full length, not a particularily bad thing though. Something a little dusty/bland noted for most of the cigar as well. Most noticeable was the lack of complexity...for me it was the same taste throughout and it got a bit boring for the last third. I would smoke another, but would not expect any surprises. All together, I would rate it a 3.25. I have a couple of guesses ready.
What happens if nobody nails the brand? Can we get a second round of guesses? And if two people nail the brand, then I suppose the one the nails the actual cigar would win?
Thanks for sending the cigar Paul. That idea was a lot of good fun to participate in. Being that my package was thoroughly inspected, be aware of your next border crossing. We probably now have a big red flag next to our names.
Are we now ready to officially open this taste test up for guessing?
Ok, Let's open up the thread for guessing. First come, first win.

1. H. Upmann Cameroon Corona
2. Joya de Nicaragua Celebración Corona (I should know better than to guess this since the construction was good)
I have no idea, but it tasted a bit like an Onyx Reserve Toro, or a Carlos Torano Exodus 1959 Gold Toro.
I'm guessing its a Hoyo de Monterrey or an Excaliber, which is made by Hoyo!

Carlos Torano 1916
Cuvee Blanc
I was also thinking a Hoyo de Monterrey but my "out of left field" pick is a Vega Talanga Oscuro.
Tastes Like an Excalibur #5 Maduro
Or
JR Knockoff of an Excalibur #5 Maduro
Helix XP
something from Avo
or something from El Mejor
So far no one has guessed it correct.

My second guess of the day...
Rocky Patel V92 Robusto Second
ok I had a few ideas and people might make fun of my guesses but here they go, and i know people dont like Thompson but it did taste like a JAD and looked like.
JAD or Don Diago. Thats what i think
the review comes tonight. For me, great smoke. Guess is hoho de tradicion.
Bolivar Lonsdale
or
H. Upmann Lonsdale Selection
As a dedicated Hoyo man, my guess is the Hoyo de Tradicion de Hoyo de Monterrey (wheew, they need a shorter name). This stick wasn't up to most group members tastes, but it sure worked for mine. Tasted like vanilla, oak, cedar, orange peel and cloves with a delightful bitterness. Burn was not spot on, but was awful close--always correcting itself after a few minutes. Flavors intensified until about 2 inches, at which point it became more bitter and I finally let it die at about an inch and a quarter. Sure it my taste profile--whether or not I'm right, I can't wait to know what this smoke is so I can buy a box.
Paul
Still not on target. The brand has not even been mentioned yet. I think there's still a few folks left to guess. Tomorrow morning I'll give a hint if no one has guessed it.

2 guesses per day please. I want to give everyone involved a chance to get a guess in. But....these 2 are also not correct.
You know what, Paul? I cede all right to guess. Just pm me with the name so I can buy a box. Word of honour I tell no living creature upon this board, strike me dead, fingers over my heart, etc etc.
Paul (the other one)
I give up we all are just going to yell out names until someone gets it. I had my guesses thats it no idea, you stumped us.
I think maybe you need to send us all another one, maybe I need to smoke another to get a better idea....

I've definitely smoked worse. I can't wait to find out what it was.
I was going to make todays guesses, but Ill wait for a clue.

I actually wouldn't mind that at all, since I think I screwed mine up with my pre-smoke meal. I have absoutely no idea what type of stick that was. So I won't even venture a guess, because it would completely uneducated and way outta right field.
Ok. Here's the clue.
Larry should have been able to guess it yesterday.

OK, so that narrows it down to one of the 440-some-odd reviews he's entered. Those are actually better odds than before.
Larry actually might be mad because this is evidentially a repeat for him. So he won't get to enter a new review! Go easy, Larry!
So, it's the 5 Vegas Series A Archetype?
(My guess was something from Hoyo de Monterrey. Tastes a lot like an Excalibur I had once)

Bingo! The key word in the hint was "yesterday." When I saw Larry's review come through I couldn't believe the timing. I was sure having them so close he would have got it. But, knowing Larry, he doesn't want to have smokes he's already had before so it could have been that he knew what it was but chose not to guess it. Also, look at this rating vs. his blind review - shows a real consistent point of view.
Anyway, congrats Bryan! I'll get the 5 out to you unless you tell me you'd rather not have them.
-Paul
Nice job Bryan, congrats. :dancing:
And thank you Paul, that was fun.
Bob had sent me a JR knockoff of the Excalibur and I SWEAR this cigar tasted identical.
Are you serious? I have had a ton of Series A and that didnt look or taste like any of the ones I've had. The wrapper is usually darker and the taste a bit smoother.
I dont remember the Series A having the bitter edge to them.
Congrats, Bryan!
I knew the cigar tasted familiar. I've had a regular 5 Vegas before that I wasn't too impressed with. I've also had a 5 Vegas Series A Anomaly that I did enjoy.
The Series A is definitely one of my favorite lesser expensive smokes. I think for the price its tough to beat. Quality and flavor is top notch IMO.
Glad you guys enjoyed the test!
-Paul
Wow, I can't believe that was a 5 Vegas Series A. I had the Apocalypse before, but that was all the way back in October. I only that one a 3.5, so I guess it's right in line with what I thought of this one. Looking back at my review of the Apocalypse (which didn't really include a whole lot of detail), this one was almost nothing like it. Nice job Bryan! And another to Paul for including me in this. It was a lot fun, and a little never-racking, too, especially after I smoked it. I really wanted to know what it was right after finishing it. But four days isn't that long to wait to find out! Thanks again Paul!
Oh, can we go ahead and enter our 'official' review in the db now?
Yes. Please enter your reviews.
Woo hoo! And my wife says we never win anything!
Thanks, Paul. This was a lot of fun...although I did need your hint. Larry reviews so many damn cigars, it was no surprise that I had to pick one out of 3 that he did yesterday...none of which, of course, I have ever smoked myself.

Great fun contest...Thanks Paul...Congrats B. :-)
I had no idea.
Feel like I missed a lot of fun. Can we do this again?

I'd be game but someone else has to pony up this time.

I'd definitely be game for another one. But with that being said, I don't have enough of one type to send out to a bunch of people. Sorry, I'm lame.
I may have enough of one stick in the future, but at this point I'm lame too!
I've got big problems at work that I'm dealing with too...
Excuses, excuses....they satisfy the one that makes them only, huh?
I definitely have enough of one stick to send out. Problem is, most probably know what it is.

What is the postage on 15 cigars? Paul?

I shipped them all in the free USPS Priority Mail boxes. It's a flat rate of something like 4.80 per box.

$72 plus the cost of each cigar! That's like $125 in all! Who's next, guys?
Wow! I'll like you guys but not that much!
Hmm...I have the sticks to do it, if and when I'm in New York. Yes, the postage is a bit of a dent. Is there a cheaper form of postage for a single cigar?

You put a stamp and address label over the cellophane, mark it fragile, and send it first class. ;-)
Somehow I had a feeling I would get something back like that
Passenger pigeons?
Let me check the coolidor and see what I've got. Might be able to pull this off.
