Title: Crap Network Grow Log 2012
Post by: long_ashes on 07/29/2012 02:24 PM
Long Ashes Grow Log 2012

Hello everyone!  Full harvest season is right around the corner so I wanted to update everyone on my progress of tobacco leaves and create a grow log.  I have three different tobacco varieties and all are being grown for cigar smoking use.  They are Dixie Shade (A very dark brown leaf that is good for wrapper), Havana 263 (A lighter brown leaf that is good for binder, and Pennsylvania Red (A redish brown leaf that is good for filler).  I bought the seeds from the newhopeseedcompany.com site.  I originally planted around 200 seeds, and we currently have around 75 plants in total.  This is due to pruning from seed trays and the occasional death due to some weather storms.  They are spread out in three different gardens from three different locations, and each one is growing a slightly unique plant.  12 in one gargen, 18 in another, and 48 in the third in total.

I started planting the seeds in doors in the middle of April and had them all transplanted into bigger pots sitting outside by the second week of May.  All plants went into the ground by the first to second week of June.  They are all doing very good, some are smaller than others around 2 feet tall, while others are a massive 6+ feet tall.  I'm happy with the overall progress and my friends have been helping me out every step of the way.

My plan was to grow indoors, move outside, air color cure, move into a refridgerator/crockpot kiln that I am building currently for 4-6 weeks, then roll up and smoke using the custom 4.5x56 cigar press that I bought (short fat cigars).

Without further ado, here are pictures as well as dates when they were taken.  Feel free to leave comments, give advice, etc.  Thanks!

We are growing them in Cincinnati, Ohio.  We are estimating (as long as we don't screw up) around 200-800 cigars from this crop.  We are rolling shorty/gordo style sizes so there should be plenty of bombs and contests to go around.  Granted, we hope they taste good and not like dung.

They don't taste like dung, they just need proper aging. And worse case scenario, the perfect cigar to bomb others with. :-)

It's like cooking for yourself.  You are much more likely to eat something that tastes like dung if you made it yourself.

Cool project, hope the cigars turn out to be good.

That's a pretty neat experiment.  Looks like a lot of hard work and research went into it. Hope the cigars turn out to be enjoyable to smoke.  Just call them Crap Cigars, and if they taste better than crap, then its an upside surprise.  If not, well then you haven't mislead anyone.

Did you have to get any crazy permits to grow your own leaves?  Also, do you plan on rolling yourself or do you have outside help for that part?  Many more questions, but that will do for now.

Nope, growing tobacco is 100% legal in the U.S.  If you plan to sell, that's a different story altogether.  A retail license in Ohio is 1000 bucks a year to sell tobacco.  I plan on rolling them myself.  Granted the first few will be a bit rough but I have rolled a cigar before.  I believe the reason why it's legal is because of the process.  You can't just grow tobacco, pick a leaf, and start smoking.  You have to go through harvesting, curing, fermenting, blending/rolling... lots involved in the final stages.

Going to be a busy farming day when I get off work.  Going to be picking the Seco/Volado leaves tonight in ALL gardens and hanging them up, as well as taking some of the "mud" leaves I've already picked and sticking them into the kiln as they are brown and ready to ferment.  The kiln is steady at 120-130 degrees F and 70-80% humidity.  Pictures will follow.

So 19 weeks down, any idea on how much longer the fermentation process is going to take?

Post by: long_ashes on 08/17/2012 01:26 PM
It takes a month to dry them to a brown state (that is called color curing), then another 4-6 weeks in the kiln for the fermenting stage.  A lot of manufactures ferment them naturally outside by continuing to leave them hang or put them in bundles with moist towels around them.  That could take a year or more to age properly.  For someone like myself, putting it in the kiln at 120F and 70% for a month is supposed to be the same as aging them for a whole year.  Right now we are looking at being at full rolling stage at the end of October, with a few testing rolls/smokes in between starting in September.

We are harvesting them by individual leaves called "Priming" as opposed to stalk harvesting.  We starting from bottom and going up each week until harvest is completely done.  (A total of a 3-4 weeks process)  Which means, to make the perfect/right blend we need to have a balance of each level of the plant from bottom to top.  So we can't start rolling our true blends until all levels are dried and fermented.

So I smoked the "first" cigar from my homemade tobacco this morning. I quote on first because we had rolled a couple before that were too tight and we couldn't light. This cigar has a medium/dark/light filler mix (short filler unfortunately for now because these are very small mud leaves), with a Connecticut shade binder, and a dark maduro wrapper.

First impressions? Even on these mud leaves I was burning my fingers until the end. It had a very smoky (not straight smoke but like a steak that's smoked), sweet, and peppery (straight black pepper) taste. It also had feint pipe tobacco tastes to it, like a cavendish. It was smooth, and the draw on the cigar I rolled was perfect. The kicker here is that it also had a decent bit of nicotine to it. Which means these cigars may pack a big punch on flavor and strength once finished because these are just the mud leaves from the bottom of the plant (flavor and strength travels up).

We still have about two months before true rolling begins but I am super excited! Here is a picture of me smoking the little cigarillo I rolled up. (Backwoods style)

Things have gone well since my last post.  We are now rolling cigars and I have tried a couple of them.  The darker wrappers are the best.  They have a sweet smokey/campfire type taste with some pepper notes.  We have rolled some pretty crappy looking ones, and some good ones.  We've rolled big ones and small ones.  Some are long filler, and some are mixes/short filler.

We have tried to stick with mostly darker leaves for the wrapper, as we are maduro guys anyways.  We haven't gotten to the ligero tobacco yet (that will be ready by next week) so right now the blends are mixtures of seco/volado.  So far the cigars have been Havana 263/Dixie Shade/Penn. Red filler, mostly havana 263/Penn. Red binder, and Dixie Shade wrapper (some being Penn. Red wrappers).  We've rolled them with, and without the cigar press.  With a bag and a half of tobacco, we have rolled over 40 cigars and I still have about 9 bags left.  Needless to say, a lot of cigars!  Here are some pics:

As we let the rolled cigars sit, we will be sampling them, and may even send some out to some folks to try out.  I will report back again soon!

I'm smoking another one of my handmade cigars.  I have smoked several now.  Some have burned very well and had a good taste, and others have not burned at all and/or had a very bad taste.

This one tastes pretty decent.  It has a sweet oaky taste with almost a hint of maple syrup.  It's not blowing me away, but it's still pretty cool to sit down and smoke something that you created.  Six-seven months in the making.  From babying the seeds to seedlings, to tilling the ground and getting them ready for planting, to watering and fertilizing them, to picking the ripe leaves, washing them, hanging them up to color cure, organizing/filing them in the kiln to super ferment, and pulling stems/rolling the cigars.

It's hard work and I had a lot of help from my friends, but all in all I think of this project as successful.  Will I do it again?  I'm not sure, but if I do, it will be in less amounts of tobacco next year.  We have rolled almost 60 cigars and still have another 150 at least to roll (I'm guess more).  I WILL be giving some out to friends, and also in a contest through http://crapnetwork.com.  Stay tuned for that.

I am way beyond impressed.  I want to do that so bad, but don't have the time, space, or skills for such endeavors.

Rolled another 30 cigars in this last batch, only a couple more batches left and we'll have gone through all of the leaves. Only problem is it's mostly seco left and some ligero that needs more fermenting. I need to do a count but I know we are definitely over 200 cigars.

Your whole "project" is just too cool!  "From Seed to Smoke" - a suggested title for your new book!

Just guessing, but I'll bet Jackal would give his left arm for the Culebra in that photo...

Decided to count them all up.  203 cigars rolled so far, not counting the 30 or so that I have given out/smoked.  So around 230 cigars rolled and it looks like we can easily roll another 50 with what is left in the kiln.  Pretty good haul overall.  Soon the smoking and gifting will begin (and a contest for Crap Network).

Very cool that you did the culebra.  What is that double barreled thing off to the right.  That one looks crazy

I actually call it the double barrel.   I have a mini one of them too.  It was inspired by a Felipe Gregorio cigar that was wrapped like that.  The one I smoked from them didn't burn so well though, so not sure how this is going to pan out just yet.  I rolled a VERY long cigar, bent it, then wrapped a premium wrapper around it, and clipped the end to make it.
