3rd Annual Cigars for Troops Drive
It's that time of year again! Even though the holiday season is a few months away, starting early will give everyone who wants to participate time to send a care package. Here are the previous years' posts:
2011 - http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?topic=9907.0
2010 - http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?topic=5894.0
The basic rules:
*The cutoff will be October 31st for getting packages/donations in the mail to me. This will allow me enough time to get them shipped and the soldiers receive them before the holidays.
*Send as many cigars as you would like. Even a fiver will make a difference. My address is in my profile.
*Packages can be drop shipped to me from vendors. Members have done this in years past with success.
*Please PM me if you send a package. I'd like to avoid boxes sitting on my doorstep in case I'm traveling.
*If you would prefer, a cash donation can be made to cover shipping. Last year the approximate cost was $80 to ship 3 large packages. I will keep everyone updated in case we have enough to cover shipping.
*I will keep a running list of those that have expressed interest along with if I received the package. If you commit to donating early on and decide it can't be done, no harm, no foul.
Last year, I created a virtual humidor with all the cigars. Depending on the response, I might do that again this year.
As always, feel free to post any questions!
Count me in again Nathan.
I am in!.
Im in!
Thanks for doing this again. You know I will be sending some cigars for this.
I'm in. Thanks for the lead notice. September is a good month for me so expect shipment then.

I think this is the 4th year we've done this now. The first year that we did it, it was a pass and I sent off all the cigars to the troops when it got back to me. I like this way much better as it is more timely for the holidays. Thanks for setting it up again.
I'm in!
have you got any feedback from these? Steph and I sent out five boxes with smokes etc and we never heard peep back. just curious.

I'm in again. Thanks for running it again.

In 2010, we received a nice letter from one of the groups we bombed. They also included a flag that had been flown over their base (have the flag/specifics in a safe place).
Last year, we didn't receive anything. However, I'm not too worried about it as long as we provide something for their efforts and being away during the holidays.

For obvious reasons I have a soft spot for the troops so I'm in. Also you can count me in for a split of the shipping cost if needed just LMK what you need when the time comes and I've got ya covered.
Count me in...
I would like to donate some sticks and/or even money for your shipping costs. I am unable to view addresses but, I see you are in Atlanta and I work in Buckhead on a daily basis and would be happy to meet you for a handoff. Please PM me for my cell number.

It can get dicey with getting packages to the right people. Last year, we had one bounce back almost two months after I sent it. After some recovery time in the humidor, I sent them to a different group, and I believe they received them.

Cutters might be ok, but I won't ship lighters due to postal regulations. Matches will work, though, and I usually throw in a bunch with each box.

A handoff sounds good. I live in the northeast suburbs, but I make it down to Buckhead once or twice a month. Next time I plan on being down there, I'll shoot you a PM.

is it better to send it now or wait a little until its closer to time for the big package to go out. either way is ok by me.
I've got a coworker that's chipping in as well. We're gonna see if we can what we can get from the other guys around the place.

I reminded my friend at work today. He's going to bring his to me this week, and then I'll send our box your way.
No worries folks - life sometimes gets in the way. It sure has for me in the past few months!
The deadline is the end of the month, so as long as I have your care package by then, no worries.
Only a couple of weeks left to get in donations.
I'll post an update tomorrow. We had four more packages roll in this week. :dancing:
Got the cigars from my friend at work (a couple of well-aged bundles) today. I'll add mine and get it headed your way over the weekend.
Once I get this package I have shipped to my freinds in the SEALS, I will try to get you another shipment before the time is up.
I totally forgot about this. I'll try to get a few sticks together and shipped off before the end of the month.
Gawd, looking at the other cigars in the mix, I hope my buddy's offerings don't put me in the shytter. I just opened the bag Tim gave me. He brought me a bundle (25) of the Cigar Hut Sumatran robustos we went in on in 2009, and 27(!) Victor Sinclair Sumatran Churchills... Please tell me it's the thought that counts!

It's still very generous Dave! Any cigar looks good to a cigar smoker that hasn't had a chance to relax with a smoke in a while.

I've had a number of people express concerns that their donations aren't up to par. The way I see it, our people in uniform don't have the luxury to sit down and have a cigar whenever they want. Most of them probably aren't even smokers. Our donations, no matter quantity or quality, gives them a chance to have a little relaxation.

Thanks, Nate. I really wasn't that worried. And these are good enough to be daily smokes for me. I really need to update my review in the DB of the VS, because they've turned out to be pretty good. Considering the "environment" these are being sent to, a "who gives a shyte" smoke tossed by the wayside when the alarm sounds might be a good thing.

Folks, sorry to ask such a newb question. But, I just returned from Afghanistan about a month ago due to a large drawdown. But, I have a lot of buddies who are still there till March. Some of my buddies who are still there are part of a group of about 15 soldiers who meet every Friday for cigars. My question is are there specific locations or people cigars get sent to or is it random. I just wonder if there's any way to get some to folks who I know for sure are taking care of their smokes and meeting and smoking regularly.
Another set of donations are in. Thanks all!

One week left to get care packages out to me. Thanks to everyone who is contributing!
Also, I have one group in Afghanistan who will receive a portion of the cigars. If anyone has another group who would like to receive a package, shoot me a PM. Last year, one of the packages bounced back with an invalid address, and I'd like to avoid that this year, so make sure the people you want to receive the cigars will be there and that you send a full address.

I'll check with my sister on my nephew's address. He's got the preliminary word to get ready, but we won't know until he's there where we can send stuff to. If I get an address before shipping time, I'll let you know. And for the Vets and current members of the military, in all my bragging about my nephew, I'm pretty sure I screwed up and said he was with the 82nd Airborne. He's actually with the 75th Ranger Regiment. Trust me, he's beat me verbally about the head and shoulders about that...

Neil (Shukpaw), provided 100 cigars for the effort. For those of you who weren't around the past couple of years, Neil has donated 100+ cigars every year, IIRC. Way above and beyond, brother!
We have two days left to get any donations in the mail. Here is an updated list of contributors:

Nathan -
Mine went out Monday morning. Thanks for organizing and overseeing this effort.
Two more donations. Thanks go out to blue heron and McBryde:
With that, we have wrapped this up. Here is the final total - 676 cigars! If you are curious, here is what was donated:

And here is a picture of the total damage:
A huge thanks goes out to the following individuals - you guys/gals have really been generous! I'm going to include the names of you all in a letter that I'll send with each box. My plan is to have these go out next week.

That look's great!. Thanks for spearheading this again Nathan.
Excellent job once again Nate! I'm proud to be a part of it. Hopefully it will give some folks a chance to relax in an otherwise hostile environment.
A big thanks to you, Nathan - awesome!
That's awesome I was happy to help. Thanks Nathan

Sorry I didn't get mine in Nathan. I'll have to double down next year. :shamebag:
Nothing like squeaking in in the last minute possible, LOL. Looks like a great batch that was assembled to head overseas. And another thanks Nathan for spearheading this.

It's amazing the amount of cigars the guys donated. I'm very happy I was able to help a little bit. Thanks to Nathan again for an awesome job organizing this. Hopefully all the packages arrive at their destination safely. :bigthumbs: :respekt:

X2. I totally spaced on this.
No worries for those that didn't get to contribute this year. There is always next year!
Just found out my wife's cousin just got sent overseas (not sure where yet). We're going to send him a package, so I'm gonna throw in a goodie bag of smokes. Some redemption for me at least.
My wife actually brought it up, asking if I wanted to send some cigars there. I think it's mostly because she wants me to get rid of some of my huge stock.
The packages went out today.
I know I've said it before, but thanks go out to everyone who contributed cigars and cash for shipping costs!
Glad to help and thanks for organizing this for the troops Nathan!!!
Thanks for organizing this again Nathan.
Thanks again for doing this Nathan.
These already made it over to their destination, just in time for Thanksgiving! :dancing:
I was also told that they will try and snap some photos to send our way.
