Title: How to grow cigars
Post by: long_ashes on 04/07/2013 07:14 PM
Going to be doing a new segment on Crap Network called "How To Grow Cigars" and I will be taking you from the beginning stages of growing tobacco, all the way through maintaining the plants, harvesting, curing, and fermenting.  From seed to smoke.  Look for the first video within the next week on how to get started.

Oh, yeah. This'll help my marriage.  I work seven days a week, am making my own beer, am a coffee snob, have this cigar hobby, and now this.  I can hear it now.

"But honey.  It's just a few plants in the backyard.  I'll be harvesting soon.  Then curing and fermenting.  Then rolling."

She'll slap me upside the back of my head.  And rightfully so.

That said, I'm looking forward to it!

I'm right there with you... the other problem is that I've already got the back yard full of tomato plants, and putting in tobacco along side of them would probably be counter productive...

This means I'll have to add more garden space. My back yard is pretty full right now.

For some reason, I do not see planting tobacco next to the wife's tomatoes

Crap Network Shorts: How To Grow Cigars Part 1

This is a new segment on the Crap Network on how to grow cigars (tobacco).  I am documenting my next batch of homemade cigars from seed to smoke.  I am by no means an expert.  I'm just a dude telling you how I did it.

Great video!  I am around the same stage as your video in my first year growing some tobacco plants.  Planning on making my own cigars too.  Will be fun to follow along.  My plants are about a half inch tall, with 2 small leaves on top.  Unfortunately I got the tray after I started and had to transplant the seedlings over, and fear I damaged some of them.  I am keeping the cover on them to retain the humidity, and have a grow bulb above them.  Does this seem like I'm doing ok?

Thanks!
Brian

Yeah you are doing fine, mine are about there as well which is why I have not done another video yet.  I think things just aren't growing as fast this year.  Last year at this time I already had them about two inches tall and outside in dixie cups.  They are still in the house and about a half inch tall with around four leaves.

How are you lighting them at this stage?

I did have a grow light but it died on me, but they sit right in front of a window sill.

I'll be taking notes along the way. This is something I'm very interested in attempting. I've grown my own gardens for several years, but never tobacco. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Unfortunately this year my thumb wasn't very green.  Nice pic btw.  I would suggest you get them in the ground ASAP.  Otherwise it will be too late.  My crop was plagued with mold, and my youngest son knocking over the seed trays multiple times.  They have all died.  :(  There is always next year.

Thanks.  Will do that tomorrow.  I'm waiting for some pots to be delivered from Amazon.com.  But I have some planters I can get started into...
I'll post some Pics or a video if I get ambitious...

Later,
B.

OK, so out of all the plants I sowed, I have several that are growing worthy of continuing the experiment. Unfortunately my best plant was just ravaged by horn worms. I mean, devastated! What kind of insecticide can be used? I may try to salvage that plant, as it's root system is nice and strong. I will post photos one of these days...
Thanks for any tips you cab give!

Question off topic....how can you grow more then one type of tobacco without cross pollination or do u grow one ken year and the other next year and so forth to make a good cigar?
Title: RE: How to grow cigars
Post by: wbrian on 07/28/2013 01:41 PM
I have two types growing near each other.  I'm not looking to get seed from them, so I don't care if they cross pollinate or not.  But I'm sure that people who do this more seriously than my little experiment care, probably.

here are some pics of my "crop" so far.  Also some shots of an evil horn worm and the ravage he and four of his friends have done to my best plant...
