I have been wanting to try Rye Whiskey, but have zero experience with it. I was wondering if there are any Geeks that enjoy rye that could provide some insight as to what you like, and what would be a good rye for someone to try that has never had it before? I have heard of some of the "bigger named" brands, i.e. Bullitt, Sazerac etc., but have not tried any.
I've really liked Bulleit, Templeton, and Dickel.
I think that Bulleit would be a good rye for a beginner.
Templeton Rye.
QuoteThe Burn Ward - 1/10/2014 12:51 AM Templeton Rye.
X10 best rye I have had. Somewhat hard to find for me.
You may laugh, but I'm partial to Fleischmann's Rye whiskey and have a hard time finding it these days. My father-in-law used it in his perfect Manhattan recipe which he taught me many years ago. As a result, there's a bit of nostalgia involved. There's not much selection of Rye in the PA State stores but the carried a brand called (ri)1, which was a Beam product, it was overpriced for what it was (the bad news) but if you can find it now it is heavily discounted (the good news). It isn't reviewed well but I quite enjoyed it in a perfect Manhattan w/twist.
I'll be following this thread and would very much like suggestions for a good rye for mixed drinks as I almost never drink it neat.
X2 on the Bulleit. I would go so far as to that it's good for the beginner and seasoned rye drinker alike. For the price, you can't beat it. Even though Bulleit is a "big" company, they make their products honestly.
Here's a great site for anyone looking to try something new, or to navigate the myriad of choices faced at today's liquor stores...

The only rye I've had was bulleit and it was great. So much so a friend who is a non spirit drinker loved it
Bulleit is a decent rye. I also like Hudson Rye from Tuthilltown Distillery in New York.

Only Rye Whiskey I know is Rockin Rye....taste great after a few shots but you feel like crap in morning. My younger years of course
Rye in general is a bit dryer and less sweet than bourbon, and different Rye brands also vary in these characteristics. My personal preference is towards the sweeter side, so my house brand is Sazerac. My favorite Rye is Thomas H Handy Sazerac Straight Rye, which weighs in at 132 proof and is impossible to find.
Thank you everyone for your input! I am going to make a trip to the State Store this weekend and check out the selection. See what is available and maybe come back to y'all again before I pull the trigger on anything.
What about Masterson's Rye Whisky - French Oak. Not on the cheap side but very very good. Smoothest one I've tried.
Enough of the whiskey talk already! I've still got 4-5 hours more of work until I can enjoy some with a good cigar!
Templeton & knob creek....I like both of them

Hell yeah it does. I've come to prefer them with rye in lieu of bourbon. There are plenty of ryes to choose from, and not that long ago there were hardly any. (Not counting Canadian "Rye", which is a whole other story.)

Indeed it does! Had 2 of these with Sazerac Rye last night, but I make mine with a splash of Grand Marnier in place of real oranges.
short money- Old Overholt
money no issue- Whistlepig
rye is spicier than bourbon.
never heard of any of them being from the frozen north . We love our Canadian rye whiskey though , forty creek or the old standby Crown royal

I actually just recently read an article about Whistlepig and that's what got me remembering that I have been wanting to branch out from my normal Irish Whisky and try soem Rye.
High West Rendezvous Rye is one of the best whiskeys I've ever had. Bulleit is a good rye and I normally have it around, but High West was awesome.
I've yet to try Rye Whiskey myself, but I've been tempted a few times to pick up some Bulleit. However, I usually grab a bourbon instead.
my goto drink is tullmore dew. its an irish whiskey and its really good. A good friend of mine brought me a bottle back from the Green isle once and i have been hooked ever since. Oh and did i forget to mention that he is irish as well......

Now we're talking my language. Tullamore isn't bad, but I prefer Jameson over it honestly. Now, the wife and I went to Ireland this past year for our 1 year anniversary and while over there I had a couple of different Whisky's that I found to be really good. One of them, Redbreast 12 Year, you can find over here state side if you're lucky. The other, Yellow Spot, is NOT available in the states at all. I brought back a couple bottles with us, and for Christmas my awesome wife ordered me another bottle of the Yellow Spot from Ireland that is currently en-route. My wife knows how to win me over. :dancing:

whistlepig is out of Vermont. the 10 year is around $65, the 11 year is maybe $80. recently saw a newer release with a name I can't recall for over $100.

Templeton Rye.
If you can find this, you should really enjoy it. I know I do.
I tried a flight of High West Rye's at a local bar for $25.00 recently. I knew the bar tender so she gave
me very generous pours! I had all of them except the most expensive (which is no longer available
and apprx $134/btl) one. Their Standard Double Rye outshined them all and it's the most affordable!
I second the Ri 1 recommendation. Rittenhouse makes a great Old Fashioned (finally found a honey hole that sells it for apprx $15!)
I've heard people swearing up and down about Templeton's and Masterson's recently. (I used to see Masterson's
all the time up until recently...) When It comes back (supposedly this year) stock up on Wild Turkey 101 Rye!
I haven't brought myself to make a purchase, but one of these days I'm going to "Pony Up" and buy a bottle
of Whistle Pig 10yr just to see what all the fuss is about! They also have 11yr (apprx $100 here in Atlanta) and
Boss Hog (12yr Single Barrel) on the shelves right now. (Apprx $150)
On another note, Gary (Cigary43) has me !@#%$ed up on White Russians, and last night I invented my own
version of the Pink Nipple! Prior to his post last week, I wasn't drinking very many mixed Drinks... Now... I can't
stop! *lol*

The Yellow Dot and Green Dot are great whiskies. Another from the "Green Isle" that's a must is the Powers 12y/o John's Lane release - simply fantastic.
I love rye, buy I can't fathom $150 for a bottle. For that kind of money, I'm getting a bottle of kick-ass scotch.
Never had the Powers Brad. I'm running low on the Yellow Spot so my awesome wife ordered me another bottle straight from the Isle for Christmas. I might have to give Powers a try though. Is it available over here?

No, it's not available in the U.S. Should be able to get it where your wife shopped. Was it the Celtic Whisky Shop by chance?
Here's a link: http://www.celticwhiskeyshop.com/Powers_Johns_Lane_Release_Single_Pot_Still-z-product-product-963-context-_catalogue-page-12.htm
You guys keep resurrecting this damned thread, forcing me to go to the store this afternoon in search of a new Rye to try. At the shop owner's recommendation, I got a bottle of WhistlePig Straight Rye. Enjoying it now with an LFD Chapter One.
This stuff is killer! I have a new favorite!
I am still yet to go pick up some Rye. I am going to do it soon though. And Brad, yes that is where she got it, The Celtic Whisky Shop. I will take a look at the Powers.
Buillet....can't beat it, especially for around $20 per bottle. $150 is way out of the question.
I'm resurrecting this thread because I'm trying a new-to-me rye. Benjamin Prichards. It seems like it has a faint flavor of unpeated Scotch, or maybe Irish whisky. That may not be accurate, but it's what it makes me think of. Either way, it's pretty good.
I haven't been able to make a trip tithe state store yet and pick any Rye up. :( Hopefully things change soon and I can pick some up!

When I was stationed at Ramstein AB in Germany back in the early 70's we could pick up a jug of Tullamore Dew for less than $5 at the Class VI store. I've still got one of the old jugs in one of our curio cabinets. Good stuff!

Nice one...love this.
My dad got me into rye recently and I asked him to try the Bulleit Rye. He commented it is rather sweet, especially compared to the High West Double Rye that we both love, so it puts me off buying the Bulleit. Any other must-try rye below a couple of jacksons?

Interesting that you would say that. I love the High West Double Rye, but I thought that it was sweet compared to the Bulleit, not the other way around.

That is interesting. I suppose I'll just, "bite the bulleit," and buy some. ;)
I got a bottle of Knob Creek Rye last week that was pretty good. I'm not one to look to for recommendations though, I seem to like them all.
Whistle Pig is very good, but expensive. I sometimes put it in a manhattan to change things up. I also substitute St. Germaine for the vermouth.
If you can find it, Old Overholt is great, and under $20...
I recently had a chance to try Angels Envy Rye. It was fantastic.
I'll throw in my two cents. High west double rye. Bulliett. Templeton. Willet. Col Taylor. All very good. Rye and bourbon. My two faves with a good stick.
You need some of this to help keep you warm.
I've been really liking James E. Pepper 1776 Rye of late. Almost too goo to drink...

I think I saw a bottle of that the last time I was at the Party Source down in Kentucky... I'll have to grab some the next time I'm there.
Some really great suggestions on here thanks to all. Must go shopping soon...
Looks like I'm resurrecting this one!
My go-to is Sazerac 6 since it's always in stock at a store about 25 minutes away. I also always have a bottle of Bulleit and George Dickel knocking around, they're both great for the pric. When I'm not under the watchful eye of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (and their state-run stores) I'll pick up High West Double, but it's surprisingly hard to get around here. My last bottle came home with me from Las Vegas.
Two local oddballs that I'm quite fond of: Wigle Deep Cut from Pittsburgh (wonderful treacle, molasses, orange, cinnamon and wood) and Five & 20 from Westfield, NY (LOADS of vanilla and spice). I'm down to my last bottle from the 1st batch of Five & 20 so I'll be picking up some of their 2nd batch soon. They have a great bourbon, too.
I'm also a fan of wheated bourbons. Been dying to try Larceny but it's nowhere to be found around here and (thanks again to my PA liquor overlords) I can't mailorder wine or spirits.
Try cc or alberta premium.

If you are able to consistently get Sazerac then count yourself lucky. That stuff's as rare as hens teeth around here. As far as trying Larceny I had some a while back and it was killer. A buddy of mine bought it and we were very pleasantly surprised. On the rye front, I've been enjoying Michters Single barrel Us*1. I'm just pretty sure it may be one of the best rye whiskey's for making up an Old Fashioned, that I've come across so far.

Surprisingly, I'm the only customer who consistently buys it. I'm not sure how they do it but every time I need a bottle it's on the shelf (they also do a fantastic job of keeping me stocked on Flor de Cana rums), so yeah, I consider myself very lucky!

Has anyone tried the 1776 Pepper Rye? Just had their rye barrel aged stout recently and loved it.
Class 6 here on the US base I work on now has Bulleit Rye, so I picked up a bottle to try. They also had Crown Royal 3L (!) bottles on sale for under $43. What a bargain! I couldn't pass that up. I would have bought two, but I have to wait to buy more because liquor is rationed on the base and I have to wait until next month to buy more. :singing:
