Title: Spring/Summer 2014 Newbie Pass
Post by: nwb on 05/12/2014 07:11 AM
This is a thread generated automatically by the Cigar Pass system to discuss the Cigar Pass named 'Spring/Summer 2014 Newbie Pass'.

Use this link to return back to the Cigar Pass. (http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?action=cigpass;area=gen;boxpass_id=190)

Since we haven't had a newbie pass in a while, this will be an opportunity for our newer members to try the pass system and build some credibility here at CigarGeeks.

Criteria:  You must be a new member (less than one year on CG) with at least 100 points.  However, if you don't meet these qualifications, another Geek can vouch for you.  For all others, I will make a determination based on your participation thus far on the site.  I'd like to limit it to people that have participated in 2 passes or less.

Cigars:  Please limit your puts to cigars that have a rating of 3.5 stars or cigars you personally enjoy.  The price range is open from $3.00 to $20.00.  ISOMs are allowed, infused/flavored cigars are not.  Please keep in mind the cardinal rule of passes: all puts should be like for like with takes (value for value AND availability for availability).

To join the pass, hit the join button, and you must confirm in the pass thread that you've read all three of the following:

I'd like to get in on one of these passes, get my feet wet. But I don't feel the time is right just yet, between work, the twins and everything else there is very little time left. And we live in an apartment on the 2nd floor, with no place outside to smoke. I get to sneak myself a small cigar in the car or while walking the dog every once-in-a-while.

So I'll wait until we have bought and moved into a house, where I can; either outside on the porch or in my "to-be" cigar lounge, sit down and relax with a cigar. If I am to partake in a pass I want to be able to do it right, and to enjoy my picks :-)

But, this is a great idea for a pass Nathan

Thomas, I think you would do well in this pass.  I imagine you could do virtual (hope I am not speaking out of turn Nathan) so you would just end your puts in.  Shouldn't take much time, and I am just telling you, these passes are fun dude.

Fellow newbies give this pass a try. I've been involved with two and had a great time.
It exposes you to smokes you haven't tried yet and allows you to get to know your fellow Geeks better.

Come on newer members, Passes are a lot of fun, if you never participated here is your chance, you won't regret it.

I would but I am not a newbie here anymore, did participate in a Newbie pass (newb to Newbie pass Fall 2013) and it was just spectacular.

The seed cigars have been added:

http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?action=cigpass;area=history;boxpass_id=190

I tried to include cigars that aren't readily available to everyone and a number of different flavor profiles and price ranges.  Please let me know if there is anything you'd change, feel the price points are too high, etc.

I thought I had but apparently there is a setting to make it visible.

A separate question: what should we use to evaluate the price of our puts and takes?  If somebody scores a box of something for half MSRP, I don't think that should be compared to a single purchased at a B&M in Montreal (200% $$$$ales tax) so what reference levels the playing field to determine value?
Title: Re: Spring/Summer 2014 Newbie Pass
Post by: aflicted on 05/21/2014 07:29 PM
I think the standard price guide is cigar international.  That is what I am going by unless there is a better way.  Just look up your takes and price out the puts.  I don't think it counts as additive though.  IE 20 white owls does not equal a $10 stick.
Title: Re: Spring/Summer 2014 Newbie Pass

Ok, it looks like all invites have been accepted, so I'm closing this off to new participants.  The pass order has been set, and the seed cigars are done.  Since I'll be busy the next few days and this weekend, I'll plan on kicking this off early to mid next week.  Thanks to everyone who joined, and please be sure to read the articles in the original post prior to your turn in the pass.

Your address is visible to those in the pass, so no worries.

For the value of puts/takes, we usually use Cigars International box price.  For the higher end cigars and boutiques, I tend to use MSRP or 10% off MSRP as a guide, since these cigars are rarely discounted.  Just keep in mind that 2 $5 puts do not equal 1 $10 take.  Also, any take for a  HTF or Cuban should be replaced like for like.  As long as the value, cigar for cigar, is close, I'm not going to worry about it.  The spirit of the pass is to get some of you involved, build some credibility, and HAVE FUN!

Thanks guys, I'm preparing the stuff to go in it today. Took me quite awhile to do so but just so you all know now, that Flatbed Cigar is ALL MINE!!! Don't worry I'll replace it with some good stuff. I hadn't planned on making any take/puts but I've been hearing good things about that stick and I just have to try it.

Also, I'm going to be doing some geek math. There will be 15 envelopes in the pass box that we'll be adding to the game. Each Geek is to take only ONE envelope. Enclosed you'll find a gift certificate for either $5 or $25 dollars. The only catch is there is only 1 $25 gift certificate and you won't know which one you have picked randomly until you try to redeem it. You can check your gift certificate balance using this link.

I hope you guys enjoy the hunt and May the Odds be Ever in Your Favor!

I left it in the packs just in case anyone wants it and tossed in an extra cigar in my puts. I took the Flatbed Panacea and put a Torano Single Region and an Avo Classic #2.

Tracking recorded and awaiting UPS pickup for delivery to the next person tomorrow! Thanks for including us, we appreciate it folks.

Thanks for participating, Jessica!  And thank you again for the GC's.

Hate to hear the HdM is already beat up, though.  I was hoping that the 5-finger bags would prevent that type of damage. :-(  It is even more concerning that it burst, since I keep my humidity at 65%.....

We've tested the 5-finger bags alongside our method of packing the cigars in regular zippies and then taping back the excess like a holiday gift wrapping and that seems to work best for us when it comes to shipping sticks. Way less movement and easier to pack around. Although, I'm excited to see more of these bags and see how they work in these passes and such.

I've used the same method (regular ziploc taped up) with good results, but I've never had a problem with the 5-finger bags either.  What concerns me is it split toward the top, which might indicate too much humidity.

When this lands benchjockey, please let me know if the cigars seem too "wet".

I think Jessica needs to enter a tracking number in the pass history so it gets transitioned to me.  That way I can fill in my puts and takes and get it transitioned to Sammy.

Thanks for the update.  Looks like you guys got the transition squared away.

If someone wants to take that HdM and do some repair work with some pectin, go for it.  Since it is damaged, I don't expect a "like-for-like" put if you do take it.

If no one wants it, I'll try to fix/smoke it when the pass gets back to me. :smoker:

Looking forward to getting the pass!  Cigars International doesn't carry the cigars I'm thinking about taking and putting; can I use any reputable site (Serious, Neptune, Smoke Inn, Cigars.com) that carries them both when assessing value?

Yes, you can assess value with any of the big online retailers.  If you need a second opinion, you can always ask a veteran pass member or the moderator.

If I already know what Puts/Takes I want to make, can I go ahead and post them up?  And is there a recommended range for puts/takes?  I'd like to make three or four and want to make sure thats OK.

You can enter your puts/takes, but don't transition it until you ship it and have a delivery confirmation number.  The system will allow you to alter your takes/puts up until that point.  So say something gets damaged on the way to you - you can change the cigars accordingly as long as you don't hit and confirm a transition to the next person.

As for the number of takes, there aren't any rules in this pass.  As long as you observe pass etiquette on the value and availability, then taking four is perfectly acceptable.

Just a few quick tips/reminders on pass etiquette since this is a newbie pass:

1)When you receive a pass, it is customary to post that it is in your possession in the pass thread.  The same goes for when you are done with your turn and have shipped the package out to the next person in line.

2)It is very, very wise to do a full inventory of the cigars in the pass when you receive it.  That way, if there is a discrepancy between the physical cigars that arrived and the pass system, it can be resolved quickly.

Hope you guys are enjoying and learning!
