Title: Getting close to GURU status
Post by: Hot Stuff x on 05/29/2014 07:33 PM

I've been a member here for over 5 years, but I don't post all that much. It takes 6000 posts to make Guru ( and 720 days as a registered user, but I'm already way over that).

I'm within 25 posts of reaching that coveted milestone.  I started this thread to pad my post count and get up to the magic number.   :-)

Hey,  MattEG, tell me more about that "poolside view" you had with the Partagas Serie P tubo (mentioned in your review).  Did the tubo come in handy later?

Let me be the first to congratulate you Les, and aid you in your padding

Too early for congratulations right now, but I'm getting there.  I'll make it within a week or two at most.

Might as well take advantage of your (almost) Guru status, Les.
What are some brands--I favor maduro and toro vitolas--that don't require a long resting period?

I've been smoking a lot of 3 year old cigars lately.  Back in 2011 I bought a ton of cigars.  I was ordering a couple times a month.  My inventory was up to about 1100 cigars.  And since I average smoking 1-3 cigars a week, I am able to let them rest for a long time.  I prefer them this way.  I read a post from Cigary earlier today where he mentions that he likes his cigars with some rest as well.   I feel like this rest allows the flavors to "marry", and I like the result.

I was considering it, but nah.  thanks for playing, though.

I'll leave the naming up to you guys.

In fact, that would be a better contest than the date I make it to guru, thanks for the idea!

As I mentioned above, i like to rest my smokes for a while, at least a year.

There are some cigars I like right off the truck (ROTT), but i don't really keep track of them because I rarely smoke one that way (unless I don't have any with me and someone offers me one).

the only one I had lately that comes to mind is Ramon Bueso Genesis, which is a maduro.  I enjoyed one of these recently with just a week or so of rest, and it was good.

other than that, I guess it depends on what you like.

An early congratulations on becoming a Guru. It's probably going to take me a couple more years to get enough post's so you are a good example for us less chatty folk's. Maybe the Guru of rest and less chat.

I just started a contest thread!    Guru of ___________  (fill in the blank).

honestly, in most cases the guys here offer plenty of input on nearly every subject that comes up, and I usually feel that I just don't have anything valuable to add (although that doesn't stop most cigar geeks from commenting anyway :-) ).

I see where Rebecca Silverwolf reviewed a couple CAO flavours.   I don't understand why CAO is willing to put their name on those.  I think Drew Estate and Ted's (who make Maker's Mark cigars) do it right, and the rest mostly don't.  Maybe it's the difference between "infused" and (artificially) "flavored".

I feel like Samhain2000 with this thread.  His newbie intro thread is amazing.  It has 25 pages and has been going for over 5 years :-D

Congrats on the near-Guru status, Les. I agree with you and Gary, a well-rested cigar smokes and tastes way better than one ROTT, at least to me. I rarely smoke a cigar with less than a year of age, and most are in the 2-3 year category. Cheers!

No drinking was involved, I was stone sober!   That was Friday night.  I'm usually league bowling on Friday nights, but we pre-bowled, so i was off.  Enjoyed a Friday night off for a change.

Then the weekend came up and I was busy (our riding Saturday, bike maintenance on Sunday).
