Title: She wouldn't part with it...
Post by: gitfiddl on 07/13/2014 06:57 AM
My son and I helped a dear high school friend move yesterday.  Lots of 50-60 year old heavy furniture, including a huge china cabinet that I think my back will be feeling for the next week or so.  Among the smaller pieces was this gem.  The top has a some scratches and water-rings from general end-table use.  She says it was her grandfather's.  Her son (I guess he may be 10 or so), has been using it to stash his "important stuff" in.  She says it hasn't held cigars in over 40 years.  Surprisingly enough, after all those years, I could still detect a faint cigar aroma from the humidifier.  She told me if it hadn't been a family heirloom, she'd have given it to me.

That is really cool looking and I'm sure it was beautiful back in it's hay day.

We were busy trying to beat the rain, so I couldn't go all "Antiques Roadshow" and look for a maker's mark, date, etc.  If memory serves, copper-lined humidors fell "out of fashion" during WWII because all the copper went to the war effort.  She mentioned refinishing it.  I told her to take it to a good antique dealer/appraiser before she did anything to it.

That thing is cool.  It looks like the shelves are to fit whisky bottles

It's unfortunate that its being used as a children's play thing.

That is one of the nicer styles I've seen.  I been scanning Craig's List and antique stores for something like this for years. I'd like to own one someday.

I see them on Craigslist all the time.  Next time I see one up in the NW, I'll keep you in mind.
