Title: Facing the #1 Problem on this Site
Post by: Vroomp on 09/28/2014 04:32 AM

I have run out of room!  Looking around at easy solutions (and no I don't want a cooler or Tupperware) I found this guy but, am unfamiliar with the product.

Anyone have any experience with Whynter?

Whether  you are a true cigar aficionado or a casual enthusiast, the Whynter  CHC-251S Stainless Steel 2.5 cu. ft. Cigar Cooler Humidor is an ideal  cigar storage system that can help preserve the flavor of your cigars  and protect them from pests or other harmful conditions.

The  Whynter CHC-251S is designed to help store and age cigars within the  optimal humidity range 62% to 75% at room temperature. This cigar cooler  humidor contains a humidification tray (for use with preferred  solution/moisture beads) and equipped with an elegant analog hygrometer  which helps monitor the desired level of humidity.

Having  a temperature controlled environment is also critical for discouraging  the proliferation of any pests that may be present in the tobacco  leaves. The thermoelectric cooling system used here minimizes the drying  effect when cooling, relative to the compressor based cooling systems  in many refrigeration units.

Furnished  with four Spanish Cedar flat shelves and two spacious drawers, the  Whynter CHC-251S helps maintain humidity, emits a light complementary  aroma, and helps repel damaging insects.

In  addition to its main purpose of storing, preserving, and aging cigars,  the Whynter Cigar Cooler Humidor is also an attractive and elegant  showcase for your prized collection.

Model: CHC-251S

*This unit comes with one year limited warranty.

Looks nice, no experience.  Here are a couple of reviews on Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Whynter-CHC-251S-Stainless-Cooler-Humidor/product-reviews/B00KO90H6Y/ref=dpx_acr_txt?showViewpoints=1

And a deal I found on it:

Let us know how it turns out if you get one!

That looks pretty sweet to me, and the deal Don posted is 75% off looks even better.

My wife picked me up a similar unit a couple years back and I am very happy with it. I especially like the climate control as it can get pretty warm here in the summer. I dont know that particular model you mentioned but the spec's on it look good.

Would love to get one of these but then I start thinking of how many cigars I could buy with what I'd pay for one...it's always a conflict.

While I do appreciate the bargain price at the site Don listed, I am a bit wary to deal with a Chinese Company with a Russian ISP whose only method of payment accepted is I-tunes Gift Cards!

Sears also carries the unit for $386........

Nice looking unit. For the bargain price of $191, maybe they adopted the IKEA method.....'assemble at home'

Whynter is one of the top brands in the space along with Koldfront, Vinotemp, and Newair.  I have a Newair myself and it works well.  2.5 cu ft seems pretty small.  Mine's about 6 cu ft and it will probably hold 400 cigars max.  However, it's a nice looking unit and not a bad price.

I found I couldn't fit as many cigars in my wineador as I thought, not even close to my table humidor, so when I buy another storage unit it will either be another table or a tower like that. Good luck!! :smoker: can't go wrong either way they both look very nice.

Brad hope you read this before you decide anything. I did some research and some addition and formulas. Hope this helps.

lauderdale - 5.37 cubic feet based on outer measurements - 300

mini tower - 7.91 cubic feet based on outer measurements - $600

montegue - 10.83 cubic feet based on outer measurements - $500-600

whynter - 5.50 cubic feet based on outer measurements - $455

Post by: Vroomp on 09/29/2014 03:15 AM
Thanks Nick but, the largest Whynter I have found is the 2.5 cubic foot one pictured above. While this would handle my overflow I am afraid it would soon fill to capacity. The others are just too small and I hate to 'dig' to find a particular cigar. It looks like the tower is the only viable option for me......... Now to work on the wife (who just spent $800 on furniture for our new lounge) to spend some more money.... :?:

Will do. I think I will go with beads for the humidity medium. Hoping it will be less maintenance this winter. The heat always wreaks havoc on my humidity. Maybe the cooling effect will reduce the work. Don't tell the wife, but now I need to buy some more boxes.  :-)

So I got the new Humidor Yesterday.  Have moved all the inventory in there that I can.  Gave the shelves a quick wipe with a clean sponge just damp with distilled water.  (to remove any dust).  Filled the container that came with it with Heartfelt beads.  I'm waiting on some new mesh bags as the tray they provide will only hold half a pound of beads.  Temp got down to 66 in about an hour while empty.  It's been running about 18 hours now, and temps seem stable, just working on the RH now.  It seems to be holding 60% pretty consistent, and will leave the tray with sponge distilled water in there for a week.  Should be consistent by then.  There are currently 369 sticks in there now, and another 30 on the way.  A box of Ashton Crystal Belicoso's "It's A Boy" to celebrate the birth of my son on October 28th, and a box of Avo Heritage Robusto's.  It should hold right at the 400 it's rated at.  Can't figure out how to attach photos though...

You should probably season well before you put cigars in there, if you want your sticks to be in good shape still. Read about seasoning.

I figured since I am sitting at somewhere between 64 to 68%, and the cigars are in that same range, I can acclimate the whole thing.  If it stays in that range, shouldn't it be ok?

The problem is, is that it will swing until it stabilizes...give it time, at least a couple of days. You might be happy later. I mean you do not have to do it that away, just a suggestion. Try to help sir.

The only drawback I see is that it will not hold tall boxes like the one for the Four Kicks, hence the extra cedar tray, filled with Four Kicks.  So it would be equally unaccommodating of things like  the Tatuaje boxes.  Really any box stacked 5x4 will not fit.

To update the tall boxes comment, you could fit taller boxes in, you would just have to remove one of the shelves.

Is "caca" a commonly used term in English? I know it is in my maiden language and I have to guess it has the same meaning for you.

It got me curious as to which ones did look like caca to you, any pics ?

But seriously, a very large tower humidor is probably something I'll invest in soon, if life permits, so I'll take all reliable info on them and I don't know why but I'd be inclined to trust you fully when it comes to storing large amounts of cigars :shy:

So here we are at day two, and the humidor is sitting in the high 60's.  I removed the additional humidity media (Sponge in tupperware with distilled water, and the black ice jars) last night, and it has been solid all day.  I say high 60's because my instruments are clearly not as accurate as we would like.  Take a look at this:

Note the positioning of the hygrometers:

The two Xikar on the upper shelf:

The Hygroset II approximately 6 inches lower:

Here is what is interesting, the two Xikars batteries ran down recently, so I replaced the batteries, and did a salt calibration at the same time, with both hygrometers in the same bag.  This illustrates that these are not super accurate devices, as well as how difficult accurately measuring relative humidity really is.  I am currently calibrating a Western Caliber IV using the Boveda calibration kit for the new humidor.

The new humidor arrived last week and has spent the last six days getting seasoned. I am currently letting all my boxes take a little breather for the next few days to acclimate them to their new home before I begin loading shelves with cigars. I will probably allow a lot of these to remain in boxes (since it takes less room) but, a lot will be removed and sorted by brand to make finding them easier.  Enjoy the pics! :smoker:

Very nice! What kind of humidifier is that? And does that little thing keep the entire cabinet humidified? How many fans are in there? Did they come with the cabinet or did you have to do everything seperate? So many questions...but it's not like I need something that size...yet.

You'll be closing those boxes soon so you can stuff more cigars in there, I just know it.

Looks nice, no experience.  Here are a couple of reviews on Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Whynter-CHC-251S-Stainless-Cooler-Humidor/product-reviews/B00KO90H6Y/ref=dpx_acr_txt?showViewpoints=1

And a deal I found on it:

http://dmitriyglota.com/augers.php?id=whynter-chc251s-stainless-steel-cigar-cooler-humidor-25-cubic-feet-p-13119.html

Let us know how it turns out if you get one!
Has anyone used the site with the deal?  I saw the smaller version of this for a ridiculous price and went to order it and they're asking for payment in itunes gift cards?!  Seems fishy to me...

That I-tunes gift card thing is a scam!  Sears sells the Whynter for less than anyone else although there was a recent post about getting one really really cheap  not to long ago.....

As for the humidor it is the standard 3000 count tower, shelf only, the humidifier (a hydra LG) was an extra $100 and was shipped with the unit but, it does keep the entire thing regulated (so far) it has two fans built into the humidifier. The entire thing was encased in Styrofoam so damage was near impossible short of dropping off the truck.....

Looks good man, hoping some day I'll wear down my wife enough to put in something like that.

Brad these are just great pics, such a nice addition to your already nice collection of humidors.

I say we hold a contest on how long it takes you to fill this and start looking for yet another 3000 count tower
