Exactly what I was saying last night, so the newb' can jump on and "expect" to get bombed from the "vets".
Glad I am not the only one seeing it that way. I do send several bombs, but I don't want to be told when I should. Bad Idea IMO

Anybody every been forced to give at a "work place giving" campaign like United Way? I have. I didn't really like that, but I gave anyway. I agree that generosity should not be mandated, takes some of the fun and surprise out of it. Even though I am new, I signed up for this one because I considered myself a vet in this instance. (<-Hey, look! I am one!)  I just like giving.

I see where there is a concern from the established members that newbs might just want to mooch. I'll speak as a recent newbie here: it's a little intimidating breaking into the conversations and action that is going on. It's like a merry-go-round and you are trying to jump on this moving behemoth. Some of us are a little more boisterous and forward and don't have a problem with this. Others just lurk, or throw in an occasional comment. If this pass can bring in some of those on the fringe or help repair the damage of the Newbie Pass, then I'm in. There is already one here that said that this would be their first pass. We are all geeks, folks.  This is just the view of someone on the outside looking in. You don't have to agree with me.

I also think that if we want to teach them geek generosity, then we teach them to give and receive. EVERYONE should get bombed! Maybe set a couple sticks aside in the pass just for the next one in line. Just an idea to help save this pass. I like what Jessica is trying to here and I'm game for whatever this turns into.

I am sure Jessica meant well, and its not like she was telling anyone what to do. Now, if someone posts a bunch of threads about the same subject/pass, then a little ball bustin' is in order. But when someone fairly new to the site is excited about how awesome and generous our site is, and has shown that same generosity to others on this site (without being told), I don't find any need to berate her, as her motives are genuine. I don't buy into the "outrage", and feel that a simple pm direct to Jessica would have been the appropriate thing to do if a geek was "offended" by Jessica's idea for her pass. :shades:

Jessica, its your pass, run it as you wish. Folks don't like the rules, don't play. Simple enough. And thank you for your generosity in all the passes that you have participated in.  :bigthumbs:

I didn't think anyone took a rude tone.  Sorry if I did.  Maybe a PM would have sufficed,  but I was just voicing my opinion.    I appreciate the thought was to show newbs the other pass was not standard.  Good idea.  I just thought a requirement of a bomb may need to be reviewed.  If that is how the pass is going, by all means continue.  I think our point was we don't require generosity, it is just a attribute of this fantastic community.  I certainly make every effort to over deliver in everything I do on here.  And the coolness and generosity I was shown as a noob is certainly something that kept me around and has formed the way I participate in things.just my 2 cents.

Very good points my friend. I felt that Jessica was being "attacked" by her choice to include a "geek math" lesson in her pass, which I find nothing wrong with. Generosity comes from the heart, and this site has that, and so much more. She was simply trying to teach a classroom of geeks, versus one at a time.  Perhaps I posted my opinion too soon, and could have worded it differently. I apologize if any of you were offended by my post.

I should have done what I always do (try to!)...if I am not participating in the pass, I do not participate in the thread, or opinions thereof, unless requested...which is never!!

Okay, the veterans have spoken. I'm not going to be the jerk that doesn't heed the warning of the Vets. I'll go back and change that requirement and will only run the pass in the geographically logical method. I was trying to accomplish something a bit different and I had assumed (my mistake) that the Vets would be more than okay with stepping up to the requirement bar, much in the same way they did with me voluntarily.

Clearly, I made a mistake in that assumption but I ultimately believe in the power of the Geeks and it is my hope that all members of the pass will strive to over-deliver, within their means of course.

I'll go change the pass rules now.

jessica you could still try and set the pass up by experienced member, newer member, experienced and so on. It doesn't have to by geography.

i see a couple of thoughts here.  if the plan is to show any newb how pass is run then just run a pass, dont need to have caveats or special instructions on what or how much to pass. Anyone who reads the threads here knows about bomns and the generosity that can be shown.  I would be happy to join a pass that mixes the newbs and vets but just run a pass without expectations.  also sent an ending

Ultimately Jessica it is your pass and you run it how you want. My .02 would be to set it up Vet to Newb and leave it at that. In my opinion you would get more participation from the Vets that way. This is the most generous and giving group of people on the web, especially as far as cigar sites go, but we can still be crotchety old farts when we feel like our hand is being forced. Again just my .02 for what it's worth, carry on.

I just caught up on page 1 of the forum posts.  As a newbie I'm excited to try the pass and I'm glad there isn't a "must have X points and X days" requirement.  I'll be doing my best to keep the puts and takes fair, to the best of my ability/knowledge.  Someone may put in a "can't buy this one anymore" selection as a huge gesture of generosity and I may not realize it.

What might be nice for the newbies would be if everyone takes a pic of their takes and puts with a little description on the puts so the newbies get a little educated in the process, I'd personally love to follow that in the forum.  I've only been into cigars for a year so I obviously have a lot to learn.

I worked out the value of the puts and takes, using Cigars International box price per stick (when available, had to use Cigars.com for the La Perla).

Whether this is a fair swap or not depends largely at this point on which vitolas of the Media Noche, Cuban Classic, and AVO you are putting in. Since you didn't say, I worked out both the high and low ends. If you are putting in the larger/more expensive vitolas, the swap is pretty fair value wise. If you are putting in the lower cost vitolas (robusto, corona) then the swap is a little short on your side.

The Padron is the highest value stick you are taking, and the Media Noche is the highest value you are putting back. If you are putting in the torpedo or the churchill, the media noche is only about 50 cents less than the Padron. If you are putting in the robusto or corona, it's fairly far off, and you may want to consider taking something else, or subbing in a put of slightly higher value.

I'm not the pass moderator, so this is just my take on the situation, based on the info given.

Thanks Rebecca, the Montecristo is the torpedo but the other two are robusto.  Are you looking at CI MSRP's or actual CI purchase prices?  I used actual purchase prices and came out within 50 cents total.  Here's my values:

DPG Cuban Classic Robusto  $6.20
AVO XO  Robusto  $7.44

Using actual purchase price, box pricing per stick. As I mentioned in my previous post, you hadn't mentioned a vitola for three of your puts, making it impossible to completely calculate the price, I could only get a range. The media noche (corona would be 6.25 instead of the 9.95 of the torp) was the biggest variable, and with that question settled, it does look like our numbers are matching up pretty closely.

I think I know what happened.  He sent the pass out in a flat rate box, but probably weighed it and did the postage at work, which was less based on weight.  USPS saw the flat rate box and cried "FOUL".  My Lovely wife paid the difference in price. 

Kinda funny that we haven't heard from Cort on this matter?????  Hope I didn't scare him away.

I see the package made it to St. Louis and is scheduled for delivery on Wednesday so look's like it's back in motion.

I got the package, did my puts and takes, and got it back out on the road. It should hit Aaron on Friday.

Not normal at all for passes here.  Usually things get turned within two or three days tops and then on to the next.  Certainly not par for the course around here.....

There have been several passes lately that are a) not being moderated; b) being run by people who should not be moderators; or c) both.

A real shame as passes can be a lot of fun when managed and run well.

I whole-heartedly agree!  You new guys are real champs for keeping this thing going successfully without the moderator checking in in almost 2 months.  Bravo!   :bigthumbs:

Somebody should pick up the phone and call Cigarplace.biz to see if Jessica still works there.  But the last guy in the pass should NOT send it back until we know that, because I believe these were cigarplace cigars that seeded the pass and not her own personal stash.  (The last time a pass went back to her there it sat a few weeks on a shelf!)  There are a couple of options at that point, but we can wait to discuss them until we see if she is still in this.

Called CigarPlace.biz was told that Jessica has been out on personal leave, hopefully its not anything too serious & she will be back soon.

Hey Folks,

I'm super sorry for falling off the fae of the earth. I was forced to take a personal leave from work and then due to a number of technology issues, including a change of phones, a new website launch, a changeover of GM's and a new slew of procedures at work, I lost access to all remote access to stuff from outside the office. Today, is my first day back at work. The person that was left in charge of the passes when I left on my leave I found quit to move cross country to care for an ill family member with no notice less then 2 weeks after I did, so please accept my apologies.

I'm not sure what the status of the pass is now and it's absolutely okay if the sticks got used to create a new pass or something of the sort. It's what I'd end up doing with them anyhow. If there is anything I owe you all in postage, energy, or time spent, please PM me and I'll handle it personally, but you'll have to be patient with me, I have been out of work, (and smokes) since Christmas.

I've battled some major health issues and smoking is now a once in awhile thing for me and even that I shouldn't be doing but I can't quite completely give up the leaf that I and we all so love. Hell, it's how I make my livelihood. Smoke on friends and raise on up for me.

Nice to hear from you. Wish you well with everything that is going on.

Welcome back and hopefully your health issues will continue to improve.

Yup I still have it. Its safe secure and well kept. I am more than willing to kick off a new pass and originate it from here to keep it moving. Does that sound like a plan?

@Otter, sure, let's go ahead and kick off a new pass with it. Let's keep it in the same concept of a New/Vet pass though. I'd like to have a way for some of our newer members to get their feet wet. My absence from the office means that my desk also got significantly downsized and torn apart unearthing 4 decks of playing cards. It looks like the Poker Pass might be making a comeback soon too.

I will set it up with the same explanation as the last pass and load the sticks into the system to initiate the pass. I will also back you up in monitoring it as a pass moderator. I hope things are getting better!!
