Title: CigarGeeks Fantasy Baseball League 2015
Post by: StogieDad on 03/25/2015 09:37 AM
Just wanted to gauge interest on starting this up again this year.  I had fun last year, and wouldn't mind running it again if we hjave enough interest.  This year, I would take the prize packs up front in order to avoid the couple that never paid last year, and I learned a few pointers on league setup.

Here is the 2014 league thread if you are interested in seeing:

http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?topic=27873.0

Anybody interested?

Sounds good!  Fantasy baseball takes a bit more work we learned last year, you have to visit several times a week but it is fun.  We are getting close, I will set up a league with a few more interested parties.

Just so everyone knows that didn't play last year, Michael did an excellent job of running it and it was an absolute blast. If you like baseball and cigars you should be in this one!

I am going to email the few that played last year that have not responded (and paid their prize) to make sure previous players are not left out.

Basically it is a head to head league, that part is like Fantasy Football.  You can change your roster daily and the points for whoever is on your active roster compile for the week.  So each week is a new game.  You have a limit of how many starts your pitchers can make, but that is about it.

It will be a 10 good cigar ante.  Nothing crazy, just nothing you are trying to unload or cheapies.  There were some really nice prize packs last year for nkowal.....speaking of.....

Even if the possibles play, we can probably fit a few more teams, but I am going to build this thing before the end of the week and set up an auto draft.  We will ship the cigar packs to me for safe-keeping throughout the season and I will send the winnings out after the season.  We will pay first and second place this year, I will give that breakdown once I know the final number of players.

Any questions?

Yeah I'm in - sorry read the thread last night and forgot to say that I'm going to defend my title!

It's a fun time, but baseball is a long-haul fantasy game. It was a lot of fun last year (helps when you win!   ) Thanks for setting this up again.

As for the guys who didn't send their cigars from last year - I never negged them, but its probably worth doing to at least give a warning. They were not guys who actively participate in stuff as far as I recall and they seemed to have dropped off. Oh well, still lots of fun.

All new guys I need your email address, none are listed in profiles, so I can invite you to the league.

Guys that were in last year are just reactivated in our league unless I deleted you.

I like that!  Chuck also sent me a great idea, an All-Star Break prize pack, maybe 2-3 apiece.  But I was thinking what about doing like the Super Bowl Square deal, for the All-Star break leader, everyone sends one super-premium (Padron, Tatuaje, Opus, etc.).  What do you guys think?

Brian, you can just login since you were in last year.  You don't need an invite.  I am waiting on the last two to join so I can finalize the league and draft, looks like we will have 12 players again this year.

I resent your invite, as well as Erics.  As soon as you guys create your team, I will finalize the league and set and auto draft.  I'll give it a few days so everyone can set draft changes, order, preferences and such.

Actually since I sent invites, I was able to go ahead and finalize the draft.  It is autopick, and will randomize the order right before the draft.  It will be early Saturday, so you need to go in and make any draft preferences by Friday night.

It's actually pretty easy to follow once you get the hang of it. You move players around by hitting the M button and then the spot to move them to. Your starting pitchers will have a P next to their name if I remember right. The little clipboard icon means you need to read up on that player that day.

The system as it drafted would take the best player available and insert him onto that line up position.  So, theoretically oyur line up may be set with the best player in the best position.  Where you may need to look is what players may be hurt or on the disabled list (DL).  this would be a red set of letters after his name:
DTD = Day to DAY
DL15 = Disabled list for 15 days (same for DL30, DL60 just more days)
Move the ones you want to keep to the DL slots on your roster, just watch the DTD'ers they could be playing the next day

the second thing I look at is the bench, mine took three pitchers and only one position player I might want to get a better balance.

the league is set up pretty simple, so you really don't need to micro mange pitching since all of them (except the bench) are active.

Feel free to PM any questions

Wow that's odd. Did you mess with pre-draft rankings at all?

I might have "played" with pre draft list and pick strategy a bit but I did not mess with the #1 pick on the list as it remained Trout and my first pick was set to best available. Maybe I accidentally did something I shouldn't have without realizing it, it was late and I was very tired.

Ah well, I still got a few I really wanted for no other reasons than Chauvinism (Russel Martin), Wishful thinking (Joey Votto) or, in David Ortiz's case, just plain favoritism as I've been a Red Sox fan ever since we lost our team and I love the "old man".

I do have a 2b I could spare btw, offer sent

Did we decide how many cigars to send? Dogrockets?

Also, If I change my lineup for tomorrow, does that lineup stay in effect until I change it again. I don't have to make daily changes if I don't want to right? 4 guys on the 15 DL to start, spectacular.

And do I need a DH, would he "play" in the utility spot?

once you put your team in it won't change until you change them... if you want you can go in for the next week and go day by day and put your line up in so you don't have to check back.

I think any player can go in the utility spot but would have to check that out.

I actually hope so.  I only have 3 points today????  Most teams have WAAAAAYYYY more than that.

Boy,

Am I glad I have a "bye" this week.  My team scored a total of 1 point on opening day.  The next lowest total was 34.  Is this possible?  Is my team THAT bad, or did they just have an "off" day from top to bottom.  What The H-E- Double Hockey Sticks is going on here.!!

One thing is for sure though, I am having fun  :dancing:

I could use about 6 more bench spots!

I also think I'm heavy on starting pitching and they all go the same day, I suppose it doesn't matter when they start but maybe some relief pitching would be better for more points over time...still early and still getting a feel.

I think I led the league in strike-outs...by batters, the first week...that is not good.

I just try and make sure I fit my 12 starts in each week, you can surf the waivers for daily starters.  Or of course you could try and trade a starter for a closer with someone if you really feel you are heavy.

Just make sure you don't use all your starts and then have a great starter sitting there Saturday or Sunday and you can't use their points.

Personally i would probably go A-ROD only because Votto is a left hitter and facing a lefty pitcher in Lester... but having said that Votto will probably hit 2 homeruns and A-Rod will strike out 4 times LOL

Thanks John, these are excellent answers. I did not expect as much from a competitor

They both have been pretty hot since the beginning of the season. Votto is due for a monster year and A-Rod (a liar that could still prove to be a great ball player) has so many things to make fans forget, he HAS to perform this year. I got them both after the draft, real surprised nobody jumped on them.

You want to bench good starters not release.  But I usually have a roster spot that I can pick up a daily starter if I need to fill the 12 starts.

There is a rules page:

http://games.espn.go.com/flb/content?page=flbrulesindex2015

Poke around the league home page and there are a few suggestion articles as well.  Basically the biggest thing is get all your starts, try and bench a player with an off day, and monitor each player to make sure if you should drop/bench/add.  The big guys are easy, what wins leagues is smart moves from waivers and trades to maximize your points.

It's fantasy leagues I know nothing of and that is the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

I was a baseball fan growing up, played it too (decent pitcher until they began hitting my fastball) and was into it until the Expos left town. So it's fun getting back into it. Sure I've watched the world series but that was pretty much it... until this year and this fantastic idea of a CG Fantasy Baseball league.

All in all, I think it's my favorite sport with hockey coming second but since we don't have a Bb team, it's hard for me to get truly interested.

It might have to to do with the DL, I had 3 guys on the DL to start and they don't take up a spot but as soon as they come off the DL you have to dump them or another player to make room for them.

I'm still trying to get a handle on the whole thing so I could be wrong but I think we're all allowed the same amount of active players with only 4 bench spots.

I think you haven't been patient enough with the players you started with. You've dropped some really good players so far... Baseball is a really long season and most players go in streaks... good ones and bad ones.

In this league you need lots of of Starting Pitching. Sometimes they they lay eggs but they can also score more or the same amount as a position player in a week in 1 start. Look at matchups and pick up guys against low scoring teams

I'm in the same spot Kent, though I wonder if I'm giving too much rope to some guys, not much on the scrap heap though.

Make sure you get all 12 starts in each week...if you're like me half of those guys will suck anyway but there's an off chance they could score big.

It's a hard balance to know when to cut bait, or ride a few weeks to see if they come out of it.  But that is the fun of it, you can't just luck into winning, it takes some strategy and savvy moves.
Title: Re: CigarGeeks Fantasy Baseball League 2015

And I was thinking I'd be riding the wave peacefully all season and still have a good chance at winning but that was wishful thinking at best

Kent, my best advice (and I'm no pro) is to not drop your players so fast. Ride them out a little longer or try trading instead of just releasing them. The quality of free agents / available players isn't getting better with time. The good ones are on the DLs or having a real bad start. There must be a gem or two hidden but it would require a lot more work and analysis to find them.

It really all comes down to how much work you are willing to put into this. I am pretty lazy when it comes to having fun so I try to get by with as little work as possible but I might not be a good example to follow :shy:

Still, I must say, Go Expos

Just my opinion - but Kennys Vargas and Eddie Butler to start.

Fantasy Baseball is a marathon, stats tend to come around over time, but you need to be patient with guys during their slumps. In general, look at ownership percentage if guys are not doing well. Unless the guy is out for year don't drop a guy with 50+ % ownership, with 13 teams he'll get gobbled up even if he's slumping.

Guys, I'd be willing to part with Salvador Perez (C) or Victor Martinez (DH, 1B). I would trade for a good starting pitcher.

Anybody in need of a catcher that plays almost every game or maybe you are looking for a solid 1st basemen that can double as a DH.

Also, if you want both and have something to offer I'd be listening.

So far, I really think it's been smoke and mirrors for me.  Got out to a big lead last week, but my team has stunk it up now for about 5 straight days.  Can't complain I suppose, but I'm thinking the sky is gonna fall shortly and I'll come back down to earth.

Are you ready for us to start sending sticks your way?
Just want to make sure I didn't miss something and was supposed to have sent them already.  :-0

I should have taught of that, I'm not so far from last place myself but won't get anything for it

Hye guys, as far as sending the cigars to me, I am good to go.  Feel free to send along season winnings and All-Star Break sticks and I will redistribute the ASB sticks here shortly.  Thanks for playing!  Please PM me tracking when you send, and I will post a list showing who has sent shortly as well.

I will check on the 12 game start, the 13th start should not have counted in total.

Hey fellow Fantasy players, I have too many DH as it is and, as much as it pains me, I need to trade one against something interesting. As of now, I'm not looking for a specific position so all goes, besides another DH unless he also has eligibility for OF and/or C.

I'm looking to trade Victor Martinez OR David Ortiz.

Any interest?

Hey guys,

Jonathan Schoop is freshly off the DL and he's already racking up the points. He's getting a regular playing spot so he's not a bench player or Triple A candidate, they made room for him on the Roster.

I have no real use for him right now, any offers?

Thanks for the bump - reminded me I need to get mine in.

On the 13th start - as long as you are below 12 going I to Sunday, all will count that day. It's an all/nothing way that ESPN handles it. Sometimes it's possible to get up to 14 or 15, depending on how the schedule works. To get there you'd probably have to drop quality starters, so usually it's not worth it.

Any way to change that situation or at least declare another one of my players as undroppable, I'd really like to drop this one or trade him.

We had a real dogfight the past 2 weeks.  So close.  Unfortunately for me, Nicks pitching staff is THE BOMB!!  Don't know that I can compete unless my middling starters have career games.  It seems some of my starters are being rested as well, which will make it tough.  Should be fun.  I'll do my best!!

THANK YOU!

Had a blast.  The playoffs went down to the wire.  Took a significant lead on Nick Saturday, but then he started racking up the points Sunday.  Had me really nervous until my bullpen stepped up and saved the day.  Really can't believe I won.

Congrats Steve, great season.  Happy with my results, won my two playoff weeks.  It was another great season, keeps me on top of my baseball IQ for sure
Michael,  thanks for setting it up and running it again this year.
Wait till next year!

Congrats on the win! My pitchers got ROCKED on Saturday. That was rough. If you look at it Osuna/Elias/Porcello combined for -33! That put me behind and I knew it was going to be tough. I scrambled to try to get as many starters as possible on Sunday (I ended up getting to 30 of 26 total allowed starts), but it wasn't enough. Steve's right, his bullpen stepped up in the clutch and racked up 28 points. That Saturday was the major difference! Congrats!

Great season. That was a lot of fun. Thanks for running this!

There's 14 great ones here (which means someone threw in a second one).  Thanks again to StogieDad for running the league.  Look forward to next year.
