7th Annual Cigars for Troops Drive
It's that time of year again! Even though the holiday season is a couple months away, starting early will give everyone who wants to participate time to send a care package. Here are the previous years' threads:
2010 - http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?topic=5894.0
2011 - http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?topic=9907.0

Historic Donations
2010 - 525 Cigars
2011 - 587 Cigars
2012 - 676 Cigars
2013 - 1,343 Cigars
2014 - 1,617 Cigars
The basic rules:
*The cutoff will be October 31st for getting packages/donations in the mail to me. This will allow me enough time to get them shipped and the soldiers receive them before the holidays. Please note that my mailing address has changed since last year; please PM me for it.
*This is open to anyone, whether you are a vet or newbie. The more the merrier! This is your chance to get that coveted "Troop Supporter" badge.
*Send as many cigars as you would like. Even a fiver will make a difference. Cutters and/or matches would also be appreciated, as well as sealed pipe tobacco, pipes, pipe cleaners, etc. Please, no lighters – I'm trying to avoid any problems with USPS.
*Cigars with cellophane travel better. However, if you have cigars without cellophane, feel free to send them. Any donations of 5/6 finger bags is also appreciated.
*Packages can be drop shipped to me from vendors. Members have done this in years past with success.
*Please PM me if you send a package. I'd like to avoid boxes sitting on my doorstep in case I'm traveling.
*I will keep a running list of those that have expressed interest along with if I received the package. If you commit to donating early on and decide it can't be done, no harm, no foul.
*Paul (SenorPablo) has generously offered to cover all shipping costs. Thanks Paul!
Last year, I created a virtual humidor with all the cigars. Depending on the response, I might do that again this year. For those of you who keep track of your cigars in the virtual humidor or excel, providing a list of the donated cigars when you send them helps a LOT in this effort.
One other note: if you know of a group deployed oversees, especially in an area of conflict, please nominate them by sending me a PM. We typically send 3-4 packages, so I'd like to spread the wealth.
As always, feel free to post any questions!
Definitely count me in Nathan. Thanks for doing this again, it's a great opportunity to give back.
Excellent, I have been wondering if this would be coming up even before Q3 ended. I am looking forward to contributing, and I think the virtual humi feature is a great idea for this!
Thanks for doing this again, Nathan. I know it is a lot of work. I'm in again.
Awesome. 2000 sticks this year? I think we can. Thanks as always Nathan, and I am in.
Definitely a great cause. Gladly count me in again this year Nathan.

I like that goal. Will be getting sticks together soon.
Are there any guidelines for this? Do you usually buy well-priced "everyday cigars" to send over? Send your extras? Purchase big packs/boxes and send the whole lot?

It's really however you want to do it Daniel. Going on the basis that everyone has different tastes and everyone is at a different experience level, there is really nothing you couldn't send. It's all a matter of what you feel comfortable with.
The first year that I did this, I really didn't have much of a stock, so I purchased some cigars online and had them delivered directly to Nathan. The last 2 years, I've gone to Cigarfest where you received 100+ different cigars from different brands. So last year, I made a package of the cigars from the event that I wasn't planning to smoke and some others I had sitting in the humidor. I plan to do the same thing this year with my event cigars and a little humidor cleaning.
Totally in again...thanks for your effort in putting this together every year Nathan.
thx for another year. i'm in of course!
Count me in to Nathan this is a great cause
Nice man. I'm in for this.
I'm definitely in again. Thanks for putting this all together and the work involved to handle the logistics.

Most of these guys are not highly experienced cigar smokers, so I would avoid sending any of those super full bodied, ligero heavy, sticks that would knock out a buffalo. :meansmoke:

In the past, we've sent to deployed groups in Afghanistan, Egypt, and Iraq. I've sent small quantities of ISOMs in the past, but as always when sending cigars to the US and then again to US troops, there is always a risk.

I will probably do one shipment in early/mid October, judging by my schedule over the next month or so. I don't have a ton in my own humi, but I hope to donate about 20 for the cause.
Please add me to the list ... will you PM address to ship the sticks to?
Thanks for running this again Nathan. I'll be sending something in.

We're in the last month. I know Nathan went home with a stack of cigars from CiagrPalooza but I'm pretty sure we're still far from beating last year. Come on guys, time to dig into those humidors.
Sorry for my long delay. I will have something out by the 15th
I handed off my cigars this past weekend...somewhere out there in cigarpalooza land
USPS. #9500 1132 1914 5281 0970 95
Rebecca brought hers over Monday. I will package them up with some more sticks and get them in the mail tomorrow.

7th Annual Cigars for Troops Drive
It's that time of year again! Even though the holiday season is a couple months away, starting early will give everyone who wants to participate time to send a care package. Here are the previous years' threads:

As Chuck noted, you can always help out with Toys for Tots. Or, if you'd prefer to do CFT, there is always next year.
How does the toys for tots go?

You bet! Right up to October 31. Please send a PM to nwb.
Thanks!
Alright folks, I received a box late last week from CigarPlace.biz with a Dominican sampler and some cutters. The note inside said it was for the CFT drive, but it didn't have a receipt or return address. So I don't know who sent them.
Does this sound like anyone's donation? If so, please let me know so I can give credit where it is due. Thanks!
Yep, that would be from me. Thanks Nathan for putting this on again this year. Good cause.
Well my package tracking said it has arrived in a foreign country Oct 17. Ummm now where is it?

It looks like it got to US Customs in Chicago yesterday.
Nathan,
What's the count up to now? Anywhere close to the 2,000 mark? I just looked at the humi and it's in the 900s but not sure if it's current.
It might be a good idea to update us as we get closer to the 10/31 cutoff. If it's needed I can probably send some reinforcements.

Shipped today, sorry it took so long!

The virtual humidor is up-to-date as of today, and I typically have it updated when I post donation pictures. As we get closer to the end of the month, I will try to provide as many updates as possible, but I know I'll be getting some monster donations that will need to be logged.
All,
There has been a push to pass our count from last year or hit a certain number of cigars donated this year, and although it is still possible, I don't want the membership to feel that is the ultimate goal. We donate a lot of cigars per donor (average is 25 per person so far this year) and there shouldn't be pressure on anyone who hasn't donated as of yet.
With that being said, we have about 16 folks that have shown interest but haven't sent their donations in. A few of those will be very large donations. So I don't have a great gauge on how many we will ultimately collect, but I can tell you it will be a lot of cigars that the troops will enjoy.
Thanks to everyone who has or is donating this year. It is a pleasure coordinating it.
Another donation arrived today from C130Driver, plnortham, and scrubs. Thanks!

Amazing guys and that was the first time I actually used a box to ship sticks. It worked.....lol
You guys are doing a great job.
tried to send them this afternoon but fedex was already closed. ill ship them out monday and post a tracking number then...
That is fantastic -- >1,000 Cigars!! :cheer:
That's great guys. A few words of encouragement. A good friend of mine who was stationed in Little Rock with me met up with me for a cigar about a week ago. He brought a third guy who I didn't know at the time but was a friend of his. We all lit up and the conversation began to flow like the salmon of Capistrano and before I know it he's telling me about having been in Iraq or Afghanistan (I forget which now) and receiving a box full of cigars. He talked about how great it was for everyone, but especially him being a true cigar geek, as he stashed several away and enjoyed them for weeks to come. I just smiled knowing it had to be from our community. It may seem like a small thing, but I can assure you it is bringing people true happiness who deserve it. Keep up the great work!
On the way. UPS 1Z165A6V0309576418.
This is the FINAL week to get donations in! Please have them in the mail by Saturday, October 31st.

Wow nice job all
Great job everyone involved!
you all did good and thanks to Nate
Very cool effort everyone. Very interesting and encouraging to be a part of this.
I'll try not to get long-winded here, but I want to comment briefly that on many cigar pages (most definitely including here on the Geeks), I see the best of what it means to serve in the military reflected in people's attitudes and posts. As an individual somewhat jaded and bitter toward the rampant corruption in the armed forces' command structure, with numerous friends and family members having had poor to extremely traumatic experiences therein, and all having had their lives changed for the worse, it's been a long and bloody path to step back and recognize individual honor, duty, patriotism, and sacrifice still exist, even when I find that hard to see at the top levels.
So, even though my involvement in this has been very small, it has been valuable and humbling. Thanks to Nate for his coordination, and to all for the reminders that there is still good remaining in the US military.
Two donations came in late last week, and I was just able to log them all. Thank you Kman and CigarPlace!
With that, I'm wrapping this up. THANK YOU to the following list of donors!!!!

Around when does the cigar drive usually start?
7th Annual Cigars for Troops Drive
It's that time of year again! Even though the holiday season is a couple months away, starting early will give everyone who wants to participate time to send a care package. Here are the previous years' threads:
2010 - http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?topic=5894.0
2011 - http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?topic=9907.0
2012 - http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?topic=1503.0
2013 - http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?topic=2560.0
2014 - http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?topic=2926.0
