I will be out for a couple of weekends upcoming, but am very interested in trying a traditional pass. Give me the boot if you think my vacations will make things too inconvenient, or put me at the end of the pass (I'm definitely unavailable from 9/23 - 10/4 solid).

Thanks for the invite, but I have a busy couple of months ahead of me, so I will politely decline.  Ya'll have fun, though!

Thanks for the invite Eric. I would love to participate, you run a good show, but I just can't.

I was out of time already and then my wife had surgery Saturday (all is well) and she'll be out of commission for 2 months. I'll be playing Mister Mom and Mister Dad all at ounce for a while, and those are two full time jobs

If, by the time you start this, my situation changes, I'll hop on if there is room and you agree to add me. I usually play last and virtually anyways so it wouldn't require reorganization of the pass order and what not.

Gentlemen, just wanted to take a second to introduce myself for anyone in the pass who hasn't seen me around over the last year or so. I have been smoking cigars for years, but until a year ago, my experience was limited to infused cigars and only about 1 a year. I am in the Air Force and I left my home and family to attend pilot training almost 2 years ago now. Last October my wife surprised me by setting me up for a monthly membership with CI to make sure I knew she was thinking about me. Man, that has been the gift that keeps on giving. I still get excited every month to see what I'm getting. I stumbled across CG when I was still trying to figure out the basics. I've been active on here ever since I joined but at varying levels depending my current workload. I was considering starting a pass but figured I'd better participate in one first. I got a hold of Eric and he was gracious enough to grant me late entry. I look forward to both the cigars and getting to know everyone better.

Pass arrived late yesterday. Got it at my desk this morning for a quick turnaround. This will be only the 1st Montecristo #2 I've ever smoked. Hopefully my puts stack up. If someone can take a peek and make sure. If not please let me know and I'll kick it up a notch. Box will transition as soon as I get the tracking number from the warehouse later today.

Gonna be out of country until the 13th.  From the pace that this is moving, this shouldn't be an issue.  However, if the speed really picks up, we may need to move me down a spot or two to avoid delays.

On your first pass, I recommend touching base with the moderator or a senior member to see if they agree that your Puts and Takes are equal or better.  It avoids a lot of grief down the road, and makes you more confident in your choices.  Just my 2 cents.   :-)

What do you mean don't get in passes with participants out of the USA. I can point you to numerous successful and fun to be in passes involving International Geeks, including Canadians. You know, whenever I send a gift, a bomb, my end of trades or whatever it is I send to Geeks in the US (or outside Canada for that matter), I end up paying close to $20 shipping, whatever small the box I send. But still, I participate as much as my free time and wallet permits it, because it's cool to be a Geek.

The passes I have been involved in have always had the International Geeks play "Virtually", which takes care of the additional shipping cost and, maybe even more important, avoids having to send the whole pass box thru customs, which, in my opinion, isn't such a good idea.

I wouldn't want members to think there is something wrong or more difficult when dealing with International Geeks. Many others will vouch for this I'm sure. We have members from Europe, North and South America, Asia, Australia and I hope to see members from Africa soon and maybe even Antarctica but one thing is for sure, as an International Geek, I always try to assure I'm not costing more to play with than a regular US based Geek.

Oh and, I've been meaning to ask and since I've already butt in here uninvited why not continue.

I've been following this pass from the sidelines for a while now and I have to ask, where is the Moderator, I haven't seen him post in the Pass thread for a month or so,  I hope he's all right and all is OK.

I know it's not my pass, heck I'm not even IN this pass, it's just an observation. If it was me playing, I'd be expecting a little more interaction with the organizer.

Yeah, I agree.  But, I think in this instance a new guy to the site feels blindsided by having to pay more for shipping than others.  He doesn't know yet that it will all work out, probably in his favor.  Maybe the pass moderator should be more involved with these questions.

I agree with you on all points and you're right, Larry shouldn't have had this come as a surprise, he should have been made aware beforehand.

I'm sorry Larry if it seemed aimed at you, I just wanted to make sure all new members knew that usually, a Canadian or International Geek in a pass isn't an additional burden for any other member of said Pass. It's usually the Moderator that deals with the International participants and absorbs their shipping costs when sending their Takes. And then the International member usually make it worth the Moderator's investment when sending his Puts and finalizing the pass. :shy:

X2

I can certainly see getting blindsided.  The virtual turn helps with that so a normal participant doesn't get saddled with that responsibility.  Just something to keep in mind down the road.  I've had many dealings with the Canadian Geeks, and personally don't mind dropping a few extra bucks for my brothers from the GWN, but I can see how it seems when you get a box for $7 and went to the PO and had to drop $22.

This. I'm so used to paying international shipping charges that I just write it off as a "courtesy/hobby tax". I think I just sent 10 CDs to Singapore last week for $30.

I see this as an oversight/communication error. No big deal. Hopefully the involvement is good enough that this doesn't put you off joining another pass, Larry.

My only real problem with the way this is being handled is that members who haven't yet participated in passes on CG will think this is normal and that this is how passes are played here and, let me tell you, that is not the case.

Where is the fun in it if no one's there to put some action in it, communicate with participants, comment on puts and takes and overall, give the participants the impression that the pass is not just about anonymously swapping cigars, or worse. I'm sure Eric doesn't have any ill intentions and has all the reasons not to be more present here but to me, that is not the image a CG pass should project.

Speaking only for myself here, I'm now glad I chose not to be in this pass. And I have to say that I would not be inclined to join one if I did not know better and thought this is an example of a typical Cigar Geeks' Pass.

At least the pass box isn't being re routed to the moderator's house between each participant's transition

The moderator should be the one on here answering questions. Making sure that the pass is continuing on in a good pace. They are a project manager they don't have to be micromanager but should still check in from time to time. He/she should also handle the international mailings to make sure there are no issues since you have to do with customs. Someone who has never sent cigars to the GWN might not know the tricks of the trade those those brother and sisters don't get stuck paying a bunch of taxes. It's also easier and probably cheaper to send a small box with a few cigars then a big box full of plastic bins and 20 cigars.

Exactly.  The international players can do their turns virtually.  Most Canadians prefer it that way so that they don't get stuck with a big import duty if it gets held up by customs.  There is also a lot less of a chance of the pass going astray.

Can't we just reroute this back to US geeks at this point, and move the Canadians to the end, thus allowing them to do virtual turns instead of being left out.  Certainly don't want the GWN geeks to be scared to enter passes.  Should have gone that way from the beginning.

Title: Re: Fall 2015

Larry,
A virtual pass is where the moderator or that person who has the pass currently contracts the international Geek (the current pass holder does his transition) who may be next in line and holds the pass while the international Geek makes his puts and takes.  The the current pass holder only ships what is taken and then holds the pass till he/she receives the puts from the international Geek.
The international Geek is responsible for his P&Ts. Once he receives the puts he sends it to the next Geek after the virtual Geek does his transition.    The current pass holder can then post on the thread the tracking information and/or PM the next Geek.
Typically when the moderator sets the pass order he can either put the international pass participants first or last and handle them directly.  Also the moderator can ask a Geek if they would be willing to handle the virtual aspect

Out of curiosity, did you claim cigars on the customs form or did it just have the bad luck of getting caught? I've shipped numerous times to Canada and never had an issue *knock on wood. I always claim hobby supplies or my favorite is aroma therepy candles. I always send as a gift too and claim the value at $20 or $25.

It's difficult to know if you've never shipped there before. Don't let this incident discourage you from trying again though. There are some quality BOTLs north of the border and they have access to some cigars we don't have access to down here.

Yea not your fault if you don't know you can't do it..I figured it was marked cigars when I had the choice to send it back to you and just didn't loose them.I'm sure the your next pass will go smoother. :-)

I think eric as pass mod should have better set the order but then again I as a pass member checked my order to ensure I was good with it. Guess I may have been one of the only ones to do this.

This is not a personal attack against Eric but a critique of how this particular pass has been poorly moderated. Had the pass been properly moderated then none of this would have been necessary. New Geeks and first time pass participants have a bad taste from this pass. Just look at your comment about not running a pass.  This pass is by far the exception and not the rule.  Read past threads.

X2, Not attacking Eric personally, but everyone needs to be aware that "Moderating" a pass means much more than just sending out a box of cigars and waiting for it's return. The moderator should be checking P&T's, making sure going smoothly, commenting regularly and staying active on the pass thread. YES things do come up on occasion but it only takes literally minutes to drop in and at least let the pass members (and those of us on the sidelines) know that your still around and are keeping up on things.  Just my opinion of course but I am sure several vets here are of the same opinion.  Carry on Friends

99% of the passes here have been successful, but every once in a while, we have one get lost, taken, held too long, or poorly run.  It shouldn't be a deterrent to participating, just a learning experience.  We have a LOT of experience collectively, so it never hurts to ask a veteran to get tips and suggestions.

IMHO, if moderators set the pass order, screen participants properly, and have clear rules, then passes need very little management.  The participants of this site police themselves in large part, as evidenced above.

Dan, I don't call being absent from your own pass a mistake, that is not what a mistake is.

Another thing that isn't a mistake is honestly filling out a customs declaration form with the true content when NOBODY told you to do otherwise. That I call an unfortunate event that could have been prevented if the Moderator had done his job.

Geeks are more than patient and we all have been newbies and made mistakes. Mistakes are part of the deal and besides some teasing, you'll never get judge or condemned for making a mistake unless you blatantly don't follow rules and refuse to make amends. That is not what's happening here and no one is throwing stones at Eric on this, not yet anyways ;-) Here I might get my chance at a Badge.

Nobody judged anybody as far as I can see from all posts, I only see Geeks voicing concerns and making sure other Geeks know that when participating in ANY activity here they know they will be guided if needed, that the experience will be fun, trouble free and easygoing. Even when accidents happen, because they do happen, there will be someone there to help out and lend a hand but never to condemn.

I strongly invite anyone to look up past Passes Threads and read thru the whole thing, you'll see what I'm talking about. I'm not saying a Moderator should post 10 times a day, and as stated above, a Pass can very well be ran by it's members, as it is the case here, but a little involvement is a minimum as far as I'm concerned. It's a fact that, in the end, the person who takes away the most from a regular pass is usually the Moderator and to me, that implies a certain level of responsibility and requires some involvement.

It would be foolish not to partake in passes just because one is afraid of making mistakes. Do your homework, read the rules and find answers to your questions are basically the only thing that are asked of us here. In fact, the reason why I join passes here, and not on other sites (and there are many other sites), is because I feel safe. I feel I can trust things to be transparent and that the rules, always laid out clearly, will be followed by all involved. It is not policing I'm talking about, it's respect for your brothers and sisters.

I battled against myself to post or not to post, but in the end, I felt you were missing the point if what you got out of all this is that Geeks judge easily and are not tolerant. I hope I did not offend you, really not my intention, but it's my community and I don't feel at all the same way you do about it.

That's not necessarily true... I had some life stuff come up while I was moderating a pass. I ended up in the hospital and couldn't contact the members of the pass. The vets took over for me and ran the pass. A heartfelt apology later and all was forgiven. They understand that s**t happens but to see the moderator log in and post elsewhere without checking on his pass is a bigger problem...

I have no doubt that this community has a very generous nature, I have seen that first hand. Nor am I doubting the integrity of this community. I also love being a part of this community and Im in no way trying to attack its members. This is a great place to learn and share and fellowship. Tracking with USPS says the package is expected to arrive Monday, Dec. 14th.  I'll turn it around in 24 hours.

Did THIS^^^^ Happen?

Well that's the question that needs to be answered.  There is no tracking number in the pass notes on the last 2 participants.  So is Artman the last guy to have it, or did Larry get it, do his P/T's and also forgot to post the tracking number?   And where the hell is Eric??    Shouldn't he be spending some time stitching his pass back together and tracking things down so that it is enjoyable for the other participants?

Folks, you are on player 7 or 8 out of a field of 21 participants.  You're only ONE THIRD of he way through this.  At this rate, it will end up being the Summer 2016 Pass.  The upside is that the cigars will all be nicely aged!

Honestly, if I had a large enough stash to start my own pass I'd probably bow out of this one and do so. There is essentially no mainstream pass going on right now as nothing has progressed in approx. 1 month.  Has anyone heard from the mod in the past few days?

How about sharing the tracking number?  This post indicated a participant had a bead on this thing. How about an update? "Never got it, got it and smoked everything in the box"... anything that might help.

Eric, I would like to apologize. I actually forgot you were the mod and not Larry. The impetus had been on him for quite some time. I don't think anyone blames you for the snafu. I know personally I'm just annoyed by the fact that this pass has made essentially no progress in over a month. In no way do I hold you accountable. You have run this pass as effectively as it's participants have allowed.

Actually, the "impetus" has been on the Canadian Postal Service.  It took weeks to get there and now it's taking weeks to get back to me.  I was lambasted for saying I'll never get in another pass with Canadian geeks. As dedicated as our brothers-to-the-north are, their Customs and Postal Service make it too cumbersome.

Larry, I simply meant that, sans tracking number, all updates on the package's progress were reliant on your posting of them...

I think this is right - the movement of goods can be very slow.

It's been asked several times to post a tracking number but that request has gone unanswered.  And while noting "cigars" on a customs form is a mistake, not providing a tracking number in the transition details (or elsewhere) is, well, negligent.

Like it or not, you're the last Geek to have possession of the box.  And since you were the shipper only you can initiate action with the post office (see below).

At the very least share which ship method was used to send to Canada (Global Express, Priority Mail Express International (PMEI), PMEI with Money Back Guarantee, Priority Mail International, or Registered Mail)?

Depending on the service used there is a window of 3 days to 6 months to file a claim. Global Express has the narrowest window at 3 to 30 days. You, the U.S. shipper, has to file the claim.

Good luck.

I'll ask one more time, politely:  Please provide the tracking number or update the pass transaction with same. It would be greatly appreciated - especially to the pass members.  :thanx:

I never got a tracking number when I sent it USPS.  Would have shared it when asked.  I stopped reading the posts for a while.  Told Eric I will send box to him when I get it, and even though I was thinking I'm done with passes, I told him I will do any he runs.  I have been in his before and was happy.  Sometimes things get F'd up and a little bit of understanding is needed. The package that was supposed to arrive on Dec. 14th was from Eric, he sent me some sticks and cash to offset my cost and inconvenience.  It was NOT the actual box, which must still be on its way back from Canada, our friendly neighbor to the North. Wow I zoned out on Geeks for 2 days over Christmas and look at what I missed for almost a week!

I'm disappointed about the cancellation and a few of the reactions here, but I think that cancelling was probably the graceful thing to do. Very sorry to hear that you've had some problems, Eric, and that you got boiled for it so thoroughly here. As someone who has occasionally just left the internet behind for a couple weeks at a time, I can commiserate.

Wow! Just read through several pages of the travails in this pass. Glad I wasn't in it. However, the evident controversy pales next to what we've gone through in the past...RE: Twinky, TEXLEWEE, and maybe one other yahoo named Paul...not the SenorPablo type of Paul...so I applaud the restraint.

I'm glad this one has been handled, so far, without the rancor of times past. As nwb pointed out so clearly, 99.9% of passes are conducted with no problem at all. No need to be nervous about participating in one or starting one given those odds. The key for the moderator is to actively oversee the pass and the key for the participants is to understand the rules and be prompt in getting the pass turned around in a timely fashion. If in doubt about what to do, a PM to the moderator should yield a quick answer in the best circumstance.

You sent a box of 30 cigars that belonged to Eric, internationally, and didn't bother to keep a receipt or tracking?

My guess is that mistake cost Eric about $250 - $300 and was more than inconvenient.  :violin:
