QuoteLarryPM - 11/14/2015 5:54 PM Lesson Learned: Don't get in passes with participants out of the USA. Postage to get to me=$7.70, postage to Canada=$22.00! That aside, good pass, guys. The Box is on its way to Nova Scotia.
What do you mean don't get in passes with participants out of the USA. I can point you to numerous successful and fun to be in passes involving International Geeks, including Canadians. You know, whenever I send a gift, a bomb, my end of trades or whatever it is I send to Geeks in the US (or outside Canada for that matter), I end up paying close to $20 shipping, whatever small the box I send. But still, I participate as much as my free time and wallet permits it, because it's cool to be a Geek.
The passes I have been involved in have always had the International Geeks play "Virtually", which takes care of the additional shipping cost and, maybe even more important, avoids having to send the whole pass box thru customs, which, in my opinion, isn't such a good idea.
I wouldn't want members to think there is something wrong or more difficult when dealing with International Geeks. Many others will vouch for this I'm sure. We have members from Europe, North and South America, Asia, Australia and I hope to see members from Africa soon and maybe even Antarctica but one thing is for sure, as an International Geek, I always try to assure I'm not costing more to play with than a regular US based Geek.

I agree with you on all points and you're right, Larry shouldn't have had this come as a surprise, he should have been made aware beforehand.
I'm sorry Larry if it seemed aimed at you, I just wanted to make sure all new members knew that usually, a Canadian or International Geek in a pass isn't an additional burden for any other member of said Pass. It's usually the Moderator that deals with the International participants and absorbs their shipping costs when sending their Takes. And then the International member usually make it worth the Moderator's investment when sending his Puts and finalizing the pass. :shy:

usually the pass moderator handles all the dealings with our GWN brothers and sisters. Like Mojo said through a virtual pass that way you are sending smaller packages. I think the moderator needs to be more involved in these.
O CANADA!
QuoteMojo66 - 11/21/2015 12:06 PM
My only real problem with the way this is being handled is that members who haven't yet participated in passes on CG will think this is normal and that this is how passes are played here and, let me tell you, that is not the case.
Where is the fun in it if no one's there to put some action in it, communicate with participants, comment on puts and takes and overall, give the participants the impression that the pass is not just about anonymously swapping cigars, or worse. I'm sure Eric doesn't have any ill intentions and has all the reasons not to be more present here but to me, that is not the image a CG pass should project.
Speaking only for myself here, I'm now glad I chose not to be in this pass. And I have to say that I would not be inclined to join one if I did not know better and thought this is an example of a typical Cigar Geeks' Pass.
At least the pass box isn't being re routed to the moderator's house between each participant's transition

The moderator should be the one on here answering questions. Making sure that the pass is continuing on in a good pace. They are a project manager they don't have to be micromanager but should still check in from time to time. He/she should also handle the international mailings to make sure there are no issues since you have to do with customs. Someone who has never sent cigars to the GWN might not know the tricks of the trade those those brother and sisters don't get stuck paying a bunch of taxes. It's also easier and probably cheaper to send a small box with a few cigars then a big box full of plastic bins and 20 cigars.

A mistake is one thing. Neglect and avoidance of the situation is something else entirely.
Quotenwb - 11/27/2015 5:26 PM
99% of the passes here have been successful, but every once in a while, we have one get lost, taken, held too long, or poorly run. It shouldn't be a deterrent to participating, just a learning experience. We have a LOT of experience collectively, so it never hurts to ask a veteran to get tips and suggestions.
IMHO, if moderators set the pass order, screen participants properly, and have clear rules, then passes need very little management. The participants of this site police themselves in large part, as evidenced above.
Quotedanb6177 - 11/27/2015 5:58 PM ... I agree completely with all you have said. Im just accident prone lol. Thats why i said i would not mod after this pass. Mistakes are not taken very lightly here.
Dan, I don't call being absent from your own pass a mistake, that is not what a mistake is.
Another thing that isn't a mistake is honestly filling out a customs declaration form with the true content when NOBODY told you to do otherwise. That I call an unfortunate event that could have been prevented if the Moderator had done his job.
Geeks are more than patient and we all have been newbies and made mistakes. Mistakes are part of the deal and besides some teasing, you'll never get judge or condemned for making a mistake unless you blatantly don't follow rules and refuse to make amends. That is not what's happening here and no one is throwing stones at Eric on this, not yet anyways ;-) Here I might get my chance at a Badge.
Nobody judged anybody as far as I can see from all posts, I only see Geeks voicing concerns and making sure other Geeks know that when participating in ANY activity here they know they will be guided if needed, that the experience will be fun, trouble free and easygoing. Even when accidents happen, because they do happen, there will be someone there to help out and lend a hand but never to condemn.
I strongly invite anyone to look up past Passes Threads and read thru the whole thing, you'll see what I'm talking about. I'm not saying a Moderator should post 10 times a day, and as stated above, a Pass can very well be ran by it's members, as it is the case here, but a little involvement is a minimum as far as I'm concerned. It's a fact that, in the end, the person who takes away the most from a regular pass is usually the Moderator and to me, that implies a certain level of responsibility and requires some involvement.
It would be foolish not to partake in passes just because one is afraid of making mistakes. Do your homework, read the rules and find answers to your questions are basically the only thing that are asked of us here. In fact, the reason why I join passes here, and not on other sites (and there are many other sites), is because I feel safe. I feel I can trust things to be transparent and that the rules, always laid out clearly, will be followed by all involved. It is not policing I'm talking about, it's respect for your brothers and sisters.
I battled against myself to post or not to post, but in the end, I felt you were missing the point if what you got out of all this is that Geeks judge easily and are not tolerant. I hope I did not offend you, really not my intention, but it's my community and I don't feel at all the same way you do about it.

QuoteStogieDad - 11/25/2015 10:34 AM
Can't we just reroute this back to US geeks at this point, and move the Canadians to the end, thus allowing them to do virtual turns instead of being left out. Certainly don't want the GWN geeks to be scared to enter passes. Should have gone that way from the beginning.

I would certainly think that he would have posted in this thread yesterday afternoon when he was logged inHe posted on the 24th. If there is one thing ive learned in this pass as a relative new pass member its this. I doubt Id ever run one of these. Im certain I could not take the flogging as well as eric has. I think eric as pass mod should have better set the order but then again I as a pass member checked my order to ensure I was good with it. Guess I may have been one of the only ones to do this.
and at the very least addressed the issues/concerns. :notamused:
This is not a personal attack against Eric but a critique of how this particular pass has been poorly moderated. Had the pass been properly moderated then none of this would have been necessary. New Geeks and first time pass participants have a bad taste from this pass. Just look at your comment about not running a pass. This pass is by far the exception and not the rule. Read past threads.
Quotedanb6177 - 11/27/2015 6:58 PMQuotenwb - 11/27/2015 5:26 PM 99% of the passes here have been successful, but every once in a while, we have one get lost, taken, held too long, or poorly run. It shouldn't be a deterrent to participating, just a learning experience. We have a LOT of experience collectively, so it never hurts to ask a veteran to get tips and suggestions. IMHO, if moderators set the pass order, screen participants properly, and have clear rules, then passes need very little management. The participants of this site police themselves in large part, as evidenced above.I agree completely with all you have said. Im just accident prone lol. Thats why i said i would not mod after this pass. Mistakes are not taken very lightly here.
That's not necessarily true... I had some life stuff come up while I was moderating a pass. I ended up in the hospital and couldn't contact the members of the pass. The vets took over for me and ran the pass. A heartfelt apology later and all was forgiven. They understand that s**t happens but to see the moderator log in and post elsewhere without checking on his pass is a bigger problem...

So, what is the pass order now and who has it? I would be the next US member.
As a reminder, as mentioned in my previous post, I will be in Europe until the 11th, so please don't send it directly to me.

Honestly, if I had a large enough stash to start my own pass I'd probably bow out of this one and do so. There is essentially no mainstream pass going on right now as nothing has progressed in approx. 1 month. Has anyone heard from the mod in the past few days?

Actually, the "impetus" has been on the Canadian Postal Service. It took weeks to get there and now it's taking weeks to get back to me. I was lambasted for saying I'll never get in another pass with Canadian geeks. As dedicated as our brothers-to-the-north are, their Customs and Postal Service make it too cumbersome.

I never got a tracking number when I sent it USPS. Would have shared it when asked. I stopped reading the posts for a while. Told Eric I will send box to him when I get it, and even though I was thinking I'm done with passes, I told him I will do any he runs. I have been in his before and was happy. Sometimes things get F'd up and a little bit of understanding is needed. Oh, well, not like anyone died, right?

Quoteraize - 12/23/2015 9:05 AM
Eric, I would like to apologize. I actually forgot you were the mod and not Larry. The impetus had been on him for quite some time. I don't think anyone blames you for the snafu. I know personally I'm just annoyed by the fact that this pass has made essentially no progress in over a month. In no way do I hold you accountable. You have run this pass as effectively as it's participants have allowed.

Wow I zoned out on Geeks for 2 days over Christmas and look at what I missed for almost a week!
I'm disappointed about the cancellation and a few of the reactions here, but I think that cancelling was probably the graceful thing to do. Very sorry to hear that you've had some problems, Eric, and that you got boiled for it so thoroughly here. As someone who has occasionally just left the internet behind for a couple weeks at a time, I can commiserate.
QuoteLarryPM - 12/30/2015 5:00 PM
The package that was supposed to arrive on Dec. 14th was from Eric, he sent me some sticks and cash to offset my cost and inconvenience.[/i] It was NOT the actual box, which must still be on its way back from Canada, our friendly neighbor to the North. Sorry for that miscommunication/,misunderstanding.
