If you haven't interacted with me yet, there are a few things you should know:
I love giving gifts
I love Christmas
I love music, particularly hymns and carols
With all the fraternity and generosity this site and its BOTLs have shown me over the past several months, I wanted to do something in the spirit of the season. With the first Sunday of Advent fast approaching, lights going up around my neighborhood, and my patience wearing out, I decided to kick this off a bit early - but that just means someone will have cigars sooner! I have no idea how well this is going to work, but I'm giving it a whirl anyway.
THE IDEA: To share some cigars with those interested in trying them, and to prompt a little bit of holiday music listening, I'm asking everyone to guess my favorite Christmas song (okay, second favorite, because #1 is a bit too obvious)
THE RUB: These are "everyday smokes" - no unicorns or magical snowmen here. I initially thought of limiting this to Expert-level ranks and below, but as long as you're game, are an actively participating member of Cigar Geeks, and will enjoy the sticks, I don't think I care who enters.
THE RULES:
1. One guess per geek per day. Any votes over the first, timestamped with the same date as the first, will be ignored
2. Guesses must be posted in this thread. It's on you to not repeat guesses that your fellow Geeks have made
3. Every two days that go by (so beginning Friday), if the song has not been guessed, I will issue a hint and add a cigar to the "stocking"
4. The "stocking" will begin with five cigars in it, listed and pictured below
BONUS:
If you guess correctly, and have embedded (not linked to) a video of the song, one additional cigar of my choosing will be your reward for being on my "nice" list! (Video can be instrumental or vocal, but cannot be ridiculous or off-topic)
EXTRA BONUS:
If you post a video of YOURSELF SINGING a Christmas song, cigar in hand, you will earn a Christmas card from the Millard household, handmade by my wife! You do NOT have to have guessed the winning song for the contest to earn this - I just like spreading merriment.
Stocking currently consists of:
- Macanudo Maduro Crystal
- Sancho Panza Connecticut Caballero
- Oliva Serie G Toro
- Partagas Black Label Corona
- Marco V Gold Label Grand Reserve Gigante
- Drew Estate Acid Cold Infusion Tea
- Oliva Nub 460 Cameroon
- Camacho Corojo Robusto
11/27 HINT AND UPDATE:
- I would never attribute this song to a specific artist. It is a traditional Christmas song/carol that has been performed and sung many times by many people
- Added to stocking: Drew Estate Acid Cold Infusion Tea
11/29 HINT AND UPDATE:
- The lyricism to this song is decidedly sacred. It is not a secular Christmas song
- Added to stocking: Oliva Nub 460 Cameroon
12/1 HINT AND UPDATE:
- This song was originally composed in the British Isles, and is considerably more popular there than it is in the US
- Added to stocking: Camacho Corojo Robusto

In layman's terms, it means we're singing about Jesus Christ and not Santa/Rudolph/Frosty. When I was an aspiring musicologist, "sacred" and "secular" were how we always differentiated lyrical content and setting. If anyone has a better suggestion that makes more sense, I'm all ears.

Angels from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o'er all the earth;
Ye who sang creation's story,
Now proclaim Messiah's birth:
Come and worship,
Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King!
Shepherds, in the fields abiding,
Watching o'er your flocks by night,
God with man is now residing,
Yonder shines the infant Light;
Come and worship,
Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King!
Sages, leave your contemplations,
Brighter visions beam afar;
Seek the great desire of nations,
Ye have seen His natal star;
Come and worship,
Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King!
Saints before the altar bending,
Watching long in hope and fear,
Suddenly the Lord, descending,
In His temple shall appear:
Come and worship,
Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King!

May God send our master a good crop of corn
And a good crop of corn that may we all see
With the wassailing bowl, we'll drink to thee.
And here is to Fillpail and to her left ear
Pray God send our master a happy New Year
And a happy New Year as e'er he did see
With the wassailing bowl, we'll drink to thee.
Here's to our cow , and to her long tail,
God send our master us never may fail
Of a cup of good beer : I pray you draw near,
And our jolly wassail it's then you shall hear.
Come butler, come fill us a bowl of the best
Then we hope that your soul in heaven may rest
But if you do draw us a bowl of the small
Then down shall go butler, bowl and all.
Be here any maids? I suppose here be some;
Sure they will not let young men stand on the cold stone!
Sing hey O, maids! come trole back the pin,
And the fairest maid in the house let us all in.
Then here's to the maid in the lily white smock
Who tripped to the door and slipped back the lock
Who tripped to the door and pulled back the pin
For to let these jolly wassailers in.
The last couple of guesses have been very on track - see hint #3!

Once In Royal David's City - one of my favorite lesser known carols
Two people now who have joined and made this contest their first (and for neobelicoso, his only) post? This I did not expect.
Oh are contests not open to new members?
That's generally up the contest moderator. You did the right thing and put a little blurb on the newbie page introducing yourself (points for you!) - your boyfriend did not. He's going to want to do that unless he wants an earfull from the old farts. Anyway - welcome to you both. Enjoy the site - there's quite a bit to be learned here...

Oh are contests not open to new members?
No, not necessarily. In fact, I had geared this more toward newer folks. It's just a little concerning when a contest is the first (and/or only) thing that a new member posts on - can be a red flag. We like giving things away, but CG is about building a community and keeping folks around. Since plenty of new members may post for a week or two and then never login again, I think some trepidation is natural with people who enter this site and the forums through a contest thread.
Borrowing one of the Crew's curmudgeon badges for a moment, I don't necessarily mean to imply that you're opportunists dropping in on a community for easy, free cigars, but this is the internet, and we have to entertain that possibility.
This is my first contest, and it's distinctly possible that I didn't think through to this eventuality when I posted it.
Haven't seen anyone take Daniel up on his Christmas card offer, so disappointing, there's so much roasting potential there.
Daniel, you may want to up the ante to the winner if they post a video of themselves singing the winning carol, just a thought if you really wanted to see some merriment happen...or just what people will do for a free cigar!

Oh good heavens, this would never end if people were to have to sing it!
The thought of offering free cigars for a video of a song is appealing though. My wife might be insulted that one of her Christmas cards wasn't good enough for folks, however. Also not sure just how many of my cigars I might end up going through!
Away in a Manger is my guess for today
Darnit, I was going to guess Coventry Carol. I love that one. It's all about killing babies.
"The Coventry Carol" is a red-hot guess, but that's still not it!

What Child is This?
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen?
Hark the Herald Angels Sing?
The First Noel?
C'mon? What is it? :banghead:
I swear I'm really trying, read the clues and all, read thru the whole thread and am hopeful this one hasn't been guessed yet

Well, it's none of those, as they've all been guessed multiple times already.
I think someone needs to go lie down!

Was it at least a good guess :shy:
Christmas cheer is going to turn ugly pretty soon if this goes much longer! :lmao:
While it was written in Britain, the lyrics aren't particularly Christmas-oriented - I don't see it referred to as a carol anywhere.

"everyone to guess my favorite Christmas song"
Hmmmmm,,,,, Me thinks this a most ambiguous Christmas song........

Ah, no no, sorry - I was addressing Mojo's latest guess!
Honestly my song is not that obscure - no more so than some that have already been guessed, and it's definitely a Christmas carol through and through.

This is my guess today too, but as an ACTIVE member, my guess is actually eligible.
my favorite. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR07r0ZMFb8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR07r0ZMFb8)

Today's Guess: Handel's Messiah, in particular the Hallelujah Chorus, composed in 1741, in England by George Frideric Handel,
Perhaps a suggestion would be to list guesses in a Google doc like a spreadsheet that would be sort-able and searchable.
Not my guess (since I already took my turn today), but just sharing one of my favorites that makes me laugh every year and embodies the true atmosphere of the holiday.

Today's Guess: Handel's Messiah, in particular the Hallelujah Chorus, composed in 1741, in England by George Frideric Handel,
"The Messiah", and all of its parts, are really an oratorio, not a traditional carol, but points for originality. I guess I understand the guess, since the "Hallelujah Chorus" is so oft split off by itself.
I will be seeing a full performance in two weeks with my wife and parents, and am very much looking forward to it.

True it is an oratorio and supposedly written for Easter but the Hallelujah Chorus is a fixture at Christmas now. Props to Handle for writing something that still is played 250 years later. Doubt the Beibs will ever be able to say that.

Also, here's my favorite rendition of "The Sussex Carol", by The Priests (it's me, are you really surprised?)
Congrats Gary! :bigthumbs:

Lol, no. I'm accomplished, but I'm not that good.
I meant that it's from a group comprised of three Irish Catholic priests.
