This is a thread generated automatically by the Cigar Pass system to discuss the Cigar Pass named 'Happy Newbie Year Pass 2016!'.

I ran a similar Pass in 2013 and will count it as a "success" since many of those "newbies" from back then are still around today as active members and great BOTLs, and some have even climbed up to Guru status! You might even recognize a few of those "newbs" from back then: Longhorn, Vroomp, tvolball, Otter, bmac7754, mpurtle01 and nkowal, to name a few. :lmao:
Target date to launch this is the first or second week of January, so sign up today! Limiting this to 14 players.
It's almost a New Year, so what better time to give our newer members a chance to gain some experience and respect. The purpose of this Pass is to show everyone how much fun passes can really be! This Pass is for members who have been in three (3) or less passes and have a "Veteran" status or higher, or by invitation. Those outside of the US can play "virtually" and will need to pay shipping both ways (which is about the same cost as mailing a bigger box within the US anyway.) I will be happy to assist anyone with questions on value, puts, takes, etc. as the Pass moves along. Or feel free to ask another FOG for advice . . . there is never shame in asking!
The cigars in this pass will have a 3.5 star (or better) rating and have strength of medium, medium-full or full. No mild cigars or dog-rockets welcome here! Infused cigars should be kept in a separate ziplock bag and not mingled with the rest of the cigars. Value of cigars will be between $3 and $20 dollars. Trade value should be done by comparing box prices first from well known sites (like CI, Famous, Atlantic, etc.) Auction sites or "Crazy Eddie" cheap deal sites (like Cigar Page) should NOT be used to determine value. Average Member Purchase Price in the DB is not accurate either (because its usually much lower due to extreme savings).
Rating: An average of 3.5 stars or better AND reviewed by at least 2 members (this eliminates reviews of 5 stars on one person's personal taste.) Caveat: If the cigar is unrated or only has one reviewer but its sister cigar of the same blend but different size has average 3.5 stars or better, its fair game. There may be other unforeseen exceptions, and all questions on ratings should be made to the moderator for final determination.
There will be a SURPRISE twist at the end of this pass upon its successful return home.
As always, please respect the value in your puts and takes, and follow Cigar Pass Etiquette (link found here:
http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=37)
Most of all have fun, and Happy Newbie Year!
Hey I remember that one. I also remember recently smoking one of those cigars from it which you told me was well aged now. I think it was the CAO Sopranos.
Get in on Bruce's pass newbies, he won't leave you stranded like the other pass out there is doing.
Woaa. Brlesq moderating a pass? That's amazing.
Makes me wish I was still a newb.
If you need/want to mix in some experience, I'd be happy to play.
So happy I'm still a newb
Sounds like I fit the criteria, so I'm happily in if you'll take me.
How the heck are you guys newbs and I'm not? Hmmm...
I don't qualify but those that do should post up, limited number of Geeks will get to have fun on this one and I get the feeling this will be a good one.
But come to think of it Bruce, I joined CG right after the end of that 2013 pass of yours, so technically I would be a newbie... to this pass :shy:
Have fun with this one, will be watching the action.
Because evidently, the first 10 months you were on the site, you mostly just did passes! That got you up above 3. :-)
I've been active in other areas, but this would only be my 3rd pass (unless Secret Santa counts?). At the rate the Fall 2015 pass is going, this might well complete first.

Jason, you are welcome to join this one. Even though you've been in more than 3 passes, a couple of those fell apart at some point, so we won't count them. ;-)
I'm in! I think I meet the criteria!
Alright, screw it... Count me in.
:bump:
Seeing I'm a newbie I shouldn't sound stupid asking this, but how does a virtual pass work really? Now due to my location, most of you may have noticed that my participation involves me ordering online and shipping it straight to an individual, which kinda sucks since the cigars are most likely fresh and not well aged and ready to smoke. I have stuff to share but due to the stupid law, the post office here don't ship cigars through the mail....damn Cuban foolishness.... Hopefully someday i will be able to fully participate in the passes and don't subject you guys to factory fresh cigars.

Why can't you ship cigars through the mail in a US Territory? Is it a different postal system?
To answer your question: Virtual players are stacked at the beginning or the end of the Pass when the box is in the moderator's possession. When it is the virtual player's turn, he picks the cigars he wants out of the list (his takes) and tells the moderator what he is sending (his puts). The moderator mails his takes to him, and the player mails his puts to the moderator plus the cost of postage that the moderator incurred. But that is still the same cost or less to the virtual player than what it costs to ship a whole pass box with 20-40 cigars in it, and the additional benefit is avoiding all the customs duties he might get straddled with if a bunch of cigars come across the border.
Very nice of you to kick this one off again Bruce!

Thanks for explaining that, and to answer your question about my mailing issues. I live in the Brtitish Virgin Islands, right next to the USVI just a ferry boat ride away. I get my mails from the US through the USVI and use a mailing service to bring them over here. Its easy getting them in but due to how close we are to the USVI and easy access to Cuban cigars they are touchy when it comes to shipping cigars to the US. I do take a chance every now and again and take some Cubans over when I'm going over to the USVI.

Hooray Hooray :dancing:
Joe's in!
We now have 11 pass members, and a good group, so I am going to finish seeding the cigar list tomorrow and try to get it out by Tuesday. Brad (Longhorn) has graciously volunteered to sit in the middle and assist with any questions you might have if I am unavailable. Since this is a Newbie Pass to help you get your feet wet and build up your "street cred", QUESTIONS ON PUTS AND TAKES ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. Don't be embarrassed to ask . . . I still send a note to moderators when I am in a Pass just to make sure that it all looks OK.
I've set a preliminary pass order, so please go check it out and let me know if anything comes up so we can shuffle your turn and keep this Pass moving along. Before you transition the Pass to the next member, PLEASE CONTACT HIM to make sure that he will be around to receive it. Tracking numbers are expected, and should be posted so that we all know where this box is at any given time. I will provide Bovedas and finger bags at the start, so please package it up for the next guy in the same condition that you would like to receive it. Please PM me if you receive the box and something is damaged, missing, or listed incorrectly so we can correct it.
Now let's have some fun! Remember, I always have a surprise twist at the end of my passes, so stay tuned!
Somebody asked me if there is a way to get emails when this forum updates. YES! At the bottom right of the forum is a "toggle email" function. click that on and you will get an email every time this forum gets a post. Good question!

I'm w/ you. I am still amazed at the number of great cigars that I know nothing about.
And we're off! Box went to the Post office today at lunch. Tracking number is 9505510347946005154254
Gustoff, prepare to receive! Pass has been transitioned to you, so you can now go into the cigar list to start Puts and Takes early if you wish (just don't hit "transition pass" until its out the door and you have a tracking number to enter.)
Great to see it started. :dancing:
God, about time. This mod sucks. Wish he wasn't so absent...
:dancing: And so another great pass begins. :bigthumbs:
Good P/Ts Justin. I realized today that this is described as a Medium-Full pass, but I'll be one who will be happy to snag a couple of the lower intensity sticks.
Supposed to be delivered today!!! :dancing: :dancing: :dancing:
Nice put and takes.....I guess I'm next! :cheer:
OK, tracking says this was delivered, but we'll wait for Justin to confirm. The first job you have when you receive the pass is open it and show celebratory emotion :dancing: (NO drooling on the Pass! ). Then you should inspect the box and contents for any damage. Next, AND THIS IS AN IMPORTANT STEP, you should take a quick inventory of the cigars in the box to make sure that they are all there and correct on the cigar list from the last player. Right now here should be 14, and you can all see the names of what they are. (Sometimes people forget to put a cigar in, it happens. But if you don't catch it at this stage it will look like you stole it.) Report any problems to the moderator, and do not post them here. Most of the time it is a simple error.
Now do your Puts and Takes on the cigar list. Ask questions of the moderator or other trusted FOGs if you need to. Maybe you can't get it out in the next day or two? That's OK, life happens. Just post that in the forum so everybody knows what is going on. Touch base with the next guy in line to make sure he will be around to receive it. After you have sealed it all back up properly and have mailed it and received a tracking number, you need to TRANSITION the Pass to the next player. This is also done from the cigar list page. (Only the player who's turn it is can see this.) Enter the tracking number, the method of delivery (USPS, UPS, etc.) and then select the next player in line. Then hit the transition button and post in the forum that it is on its way and has been transitioned.
Now your turn is done and you can start smoking those new cigars! :smoker:
Bruce, don't mean to step on your toes but its highly recommended that you guys get a receipt and keep it until the next player has it in hand. If for some reason it gets lost or damaged in the mail, they won't talk to you without it and you will need it to claim the insurance.
That is a sweet set of smokes! Picked out my takes, put in the puts and it'll be on the way tomorrow! So pumped to get the package I actually left work early! Look at these babies! Anyways, sorry for the late post (busy with family stuff), and Thanks again Bruce for getting this together for us newer guys!

Not at all! Good advice! Thanks, Brian.
Great smokes!
Great P/T's Justin!
The Pass has been transitioned and is on its way to MacMac. Joe - You should be able to see a different screen now under "Cigars" which allows you to do your Puts and Takes when it arrives. Start thinking about these and comparing prices before the Pass arrives, but don't hit "transition" until you are completely done and have your tracking number. (I can't fix that if you do.)
Feel free to shoot me a PM with any questions. (I cannot respond during weekday working hours.)
Great! I'll begin to prepare!
And this pass is picking up speed. :bigthumbs:

Dang this pass is moving along nicely. That gets the suspense going.
Question for Bruce!!!! I am next in line and then Devin (C130) is after me. Devin lives less than 30 minutes from me. Am I allowed to just give Devin the package after me or do I still need to mail it? Thanks!

Glad this is moving along so quickly, but maybe we need to slow it down just a bit. Unfortunately a CAO America Landmark doesn't meet the criteria of this pass with only a 2.5 star rating (even though I gave it 3.5 stars  ). Im posting this per Bruce's recommendation. This is the PM sent to Bruce, just so everyone knows whats going on.
Sorry about that! This is why I was hesitant to do a pass to begin with. I don't want to be "that guy". So to make everything square I pulled the CAO out and put back the Flatbed. I kept the JdN and kept the Camacho in the pass. I hope this makes everything back to square.
I just want to make sure everyone gets whats theres. Devin will be getting the pass from me tomorrow. I will tell him about this and he can make the changes in his turn if you want. I know it will screw up his P/T's but the proper sticks will be in the pass and the pass registry will reflect that. You tell me whats best. Sorry again for the screw up. Just know there are zero hard feelings.
Thanks again!
Its all good, Phil. You cleared it all up very quickly, and that was great.
My response to Phil's PM:
"No problem, this is a "learning" pass. Nothing to feel bad about. Your solution with Devin will work just fine. You might want to post your solution in the forum to keep it all transparent, but that's up to you. Glad to have you in the pass."
For everyone else: If you have any hesitation on your P/Ts, please check in with me or Longhorn, and don't hit the transition button. Luckily the next turn is a handoff, so its easily fixed.:-)
Looks like a solid quick resolution!
Good on you for fixing so quick Phil. I'd have expected nothing less. While I think I understand passes very well, I'll probably still message Bruce with P/Ts just to be on the safe side, myself.
Wow, I've been a little busy the last two days so my forum viewing has been limited. All caught up now and there was definitely a lot of activity. I'll fix the sticks, and I plan to grab the box from Phil tomorrow, and have it in the mail NLT Saturday morning if all goes as planned.

The speed of this Pass has been great, but its not a game of hot potato. Everyone needs to send a PM to the next guy in line to make sure that he will be around to receive the Pass. Otherwise it could sit outside somebody's mailbox for a week and get stolen or weather damaged. Thanks!
Okay gang, Phil hand delivered the goods to me last night. The Bovedas were getting just a little firm around the edges so I put them in a tupperware with some DW to recharge them a little. As discussed above I'll correct the errors in the inventory, and Bruce I'll be sending you a PM with my P/T. Brad I'm sending you a PM ensure you'll be around to receive and also I need your address. Other than that, everything seem to be in good condition.

Ah... he actually met me at the B&M. They're being stored in the Longhorn Lounge.
You're right about time standing still - one of the rules in the mancave is "No Clocks".
Woe is me, for my cigars shall have tasted immortality, the likes of which I can only dream.
Daniel, on its way via USPS. Tracking and notes updated in the transition! :cigarman:
Thank you kindly! I've already got my P/T's mostly selected, and will shoot Bruce a message regarding them before the box hits.
Brad, you forgot your Takes. I'll get even with you.
Thanks for sitting in the middle of this one to help it guide its course, my friend.
Jason, the box is on its way to you as of this morning. Expected to hit Monday. P/Ts and transition made.
Thanks. I'll let you guys know when it arrives and get it turned ASAP.
This pass is moving along nicely, way to go Geeks :bigthumbs:
Yea it is moving right along.A couple hand passes helps the cause.
Having fun watching it move.
Just to verify is it going to camshaft or me next

Correct. To Raize, then Camshaft, then you. Camshaft joined late, and I had squeeze him in somewhere. Good question though. I should have probably mentioned it in the forum. But its always a good idea to keep your eye on the Pass order (under Participants) since there are times that it has to be switched (new player or somebody traveling).
While we are on the topic, danb6177 will be shipping back to me, not to appollo (who is going to play virtually). I will coordinate appollo's P/Ts.
BTW, great P/Ts Daniel. Thanks for joining us.

Following the tracking number. It literally took a day to go across the street. Hopefully they get delivered this afternoon. I'll keep you all in the Loop.
Where are we at with this Jason? Have you got the package yet?
Sorry I'm getting anxious
Got it yesterday. Should have it back out tomorrow afternoon.

No worries
Anyone near Gaston Lake VA have an indoor smoking lounge? Sometimes my patio heater just won't cut the cold enough to smoke!
Yes finally next to go. Cannot wait
Jason, I was just looking through the cigar history. We must have similar taste, I noticed two of your takes were my puts. Maybe it's kinda corny, but it's kinda cool to see them travel to a new home like that!
Seems to be just moving along quite well, well done Geeks!

Yup, smoked the Saison this past weekend. Letting the Limitada get some age on it...
Puts and takes are done. I'll try to get this out tomorrow morning.
It's on the way Mike! Thanks for having me in the pass.
Great P/T's Cam. And thanks again for taking the time to do a thorough inventory and correcting any issues.

If it helps you any, I had the Limitada in my humidor since 19 Aug 2015. I had one of my Saisons tonight too. It was quite good. It made me glad I bought 10 of them. I got them for a hell of a deal on cigarpage.com 10 for $30.
Ohh im ready.

Ohh im ready.
It looks like you should get it by the weekend. Have figuring out what you want to trade for. Pretty big selection of good stuff in that box!
Oh yes Im ready. Already have my takes and puts figured out. That way we will have another fast turnaround
For those that haven't done so already, don't forget to leave feedback for the pass. Always good to recognize a good moderator and give constructive criticism when it's called for...
I'm pretty surprised that with the weather we've been having that the package actually made it to your door on time.

Packag received safe and sound. Will have everything finished by tomorrow morning. Worked late tonight
Package has been shipped on its way to Dan.
Nice. I'm ready.
Nice takes and puts btw Cohiba.
Great pass! And a fine job so far everyone!
I want to let everyone know that we had an unintentional misunderstanding on how cigars need to be valued for P/Ts, and it has been properly rectified.
Mike (STL_Cohiba) ended up taking a high end cigar (the Casa Fuente Churchill) but didn't match it with a similarly priced Put. He believed his was valuing things correctly, and just made an honest mistake. After we talked about it, he has offered to correct the error and is sending an Ashton ESG 22 Year to catch up with the Pass.
It takes a man to step up and own your errors. I appreciate his honesty and integrity in making things right! We should be back on schedule soon. Thanks for being part of the Pass, Mike. :bigthumbs:
I would be considerably more surprised if a standing member hereabouts DIDN'T take action like Mike did, but that's a testament to the relatively high ethical fiber I've witnessed.
Good on you, Mike!
Nice catch and correction Mike!
Not a problem. I own up when I make mistakes and always make sure that I take care of my end. Thank you very much for your understandings
Way to go Mike.
Final leg of the trip for the box! Apollo will do his P/Ts virtually after I receive the Pass back.
Really great P/Ts, Dan. (The history doesn't show this, but Dan also took the Ashton ESG 22 Year that is catching up from Mike).
Very nice! And a great pass!
Great pass thanx for having me
Great job Dan. Nice P/Ts and a quick turnaround. This pass went quick.

Thanx man. Yep smooth sailing in this pass. well done everyone!
The Pass box arrived back home today! All the inventory checked out perfectly. There was even a nice bag of "tips for the mod" included. (I don't know who put what in here, but they all look great! Thank you, it is always appreciated!)
Last stage of the Pass is in progress, with Appollo doing his Puts and Takes virtually from Canada. (He mails his Puts to me, I return his Takes to him, he pays postage.) Once I receive his Puts, we will have successfully completed this Pass and I always have a surprise at the end. STAY TUNED . . .
Oh, and minus the virtual turn at the end, you guys turned this pass around from START to FINISH in 37 days!! Super job everyone!! :bigthumbs:
Woo-hoo. Great job Geeks. Can't wait to see what Appollo does with his turn.
Looks like it all turned out great guys. Seems like ultra-smooth sailing and good treatment of the mod. :bigthumbs:
Mailing my puts tomorrow.Bruce should see them in a week :-)
Its on its way tracking#LM004874931ca will get puts and takes done later on today. :-)
Appollo's package with his Puts from Canada was received today. As a moderator tip, he included a nice pair of cigars that we can't get here. :shy: All I have to do now is send back his Takes and I will close out the Pass.
Gentlemen, I want to tell you all how proud I was at everyone's performance! This Pass traveled like a race horse around the country, and everyone made a strong effort to keep the momentum going. You guys proved that Newbies can complete a Pass very successfully. It just takes communication and a little effort. Good on you! :bigthumbs:
I have left each of you positive feedback on your profile. If I missed anyone, please let me know. You deserve to get the street cred on this one.
And now, as I promised in the beginning, my passes always have a surprise twist. We're going to give something new a try and hope that it works. I am going to bomb at least half of this Pass box back to one lucky player. Gulf Stream Park in Florida has live simulcast horse racing (that I believe you can even see on YouTube afterwards).
http://www.gulfstreampark.com/racing/live-stream
Your horse will be the number of your turn in the Pass order as listed today (Gustoff is 1, MacMac is 2, Appollo is 11, etc.) There will be 11 horses. I am not eligible. Race Date is Saturday 2/20/16. We'll start with Race 1 which currently has 12 horses. If NONE of the first 11 horses are scratched, then we will have a winner. (If there are any horses #12 or higher that win, then the first eligible horse across the finish line (1 thru 11) will be the winner.)
If there is a scratch among the first 11 horses, then Race 1 is disqualified and we move onto a new race until we have a winner. The order of races following Race 1 will be: Race 2, Race 5, Race 7, Race 8, Race 9, Race 10 and Race 12. If they all have scratches, then I will have to devise an alternative (or just keep the cigars! )
http://www.gulfstreampark.com/racing/handicapping/entries/entries-details?raceDate=20160220#race1
Lets see how this goes. Good luck everyone!
I was watching this from the sidelines and gotta say it was played by all and hats off to you Bruce for being a successful moderator. With that said, what # horse do I get??
Certainly no horsing around on this pass, at least no "ney" sayers
Very interesting twist!
Great pass with a great bunch of geeks!
I guess I'm going to have to get into horse racing now too.
This sounds Excellent! Great twist!
Nice twist on the pass Bruce.Go 11
This has been a perfect Pass, you guys rocked this one, kudos for a well ran pass and, obviousely, kudos to Bruce for his generosity, what a nice way to end a pass. :bigthumbs:
Well done Newbies and Well Moderated Bruce :bigthumbs:
This is a really cool twist! Thanks a lot Bruce! :bigthumbs:
Reminds me of this https://youtu.be/e3GKiRp333w
haha well done man!!. Great idea for a twist. Go 10!!!
Race 1 has a scratch in the lineup. Right now, Race 2 still looks good.

No idea what any of that s**t means...
The results are in!! Click on the three line icon (Playlist: Daily Races) on the top left corner, and choose Gulfstream Park Race 2 / February 20, 2016. Congratulations, _________!
I'm a little confused when trying to find the horses names, but if I watch the Race 2/ Feb 20 video, it appears that it's horse six (grey and gold) "King's Knight" or something. Does that mean sixth in order?
Congrats Daniel on the big win

It means that #6 won, and you were #6 in the pass. Millarddj is the winner! Will get your prize out early next week.
Ha, didn't want to get my hopes up. Horse racing is NOT my area of expertise. Thanks a ton Bruce, what a great surprise!
Congrats, Daniel! Cool ending, Bruce and a well run pass!
congrats!... Sounds like the pass was run like a pro.
Nice race! With a great reward.
Congrats on the win!
congratz Daniel!
Congrats Daniel!
I actually received my goodies two days ago, so I apologize for being so late to post this. Bruce sent along 14(!!) sticks from the pass, and was also so thoughtful as to include a Havana Saver, which we'd discussed on a herf a while back. Thanks again Bruce for a great pass, for the contest at the end, and for your gift as well. This was a great time!
:bigthumbs: Great end to a great pass.
Great selection of sticks. That is a great way to end that pass.
Very. nice cigars! Love these passes!
That's one hell of a take!
