Yeah, I'm no pro here, but I'm pretty sure there's gotta be some etiquette, even if unwritten, that one establish oneself a bit before starting a pass. Perhaps this was an accident while playing around with the pass tool?

I'd like an introduction as well...however, it is a bold newbie move, and really, Lee is the first to have skin in the game. Unless he is routing the pass back to himself after each stop! I'd like to see what he starts with...well...Lee??????

since Headfirst suggested it,  just send a few directly to him!  don't bother putting them in the pass.
Title: Re: My first pass
Post by: ninfiction on 08/30/2016 12:41 PM
The pass will go fine as long as you don't reroute it to yourself mid pass. There was a newbie that did that a year or 2 ago, it did not end well.

There's a great group of guys here and really all you need to do is seed it and get moving along...and keep up with it the forum.

Also if you're going to seed with the Opus and Davidoff I would change the upper limit of the price range. You also might want to add some basic rules...you can copy those from one of the other passes. mainly about what pricing to use etc. so puts and takes are at least equal.

I see no issue with someone starting a pass right off.  It is not as if he wanted to join a pass without anyone knowing him (we have had some unknowns abscond with passes before).  Any risk is on his side.

It's a great way to establish oneself here.

You may want to throw a couple more in on top of this.  I have found that 11-14 sticks is a good seed.  It gives more variety.  Also, make sure taht you have enough room in your containers for some extra cigars.  Passes have a way of growing during their course.

Also, try and use lightweight containers.  shipping costs also can grow as the number of cigars increase, so keeping under a pound to start is a good idea.  Those disposable ziploc plastic containers work great.

Additionally, pay attention to whether there are any members from the GWN in the pass.  You typically want to stack them at the end of the pass and have them do there puts and takes virtually. Customs and shipping up North can be a bear...

You should also put up your list of seed cigars in the pass information section. That way geeks can see what you are starting with, and it may entice them to join your pass...

My suggestion, and it should apply as a pass standard, is that the original seed and all following puts should include the price as judged by the person who is doing the puts.  It can eliminate guessing and save time looking things up.  If a price seems out of line it can be addressed.

Good luck on the pass, will be watching from the sidelines

I like this idea. It's not often that info on a specific cigar is hard to find but it does happen.

Grabbing the bull by the horns, I like your enthusiasm Lee. I want to play.  May I suggest throwing in some common cigars such as the AB's and MUWAT's you have. This would make puts and takes easier for members who don't stock opus x. Just my two cents.

Another good idea for puts are local B&M house blends.  Many are not available easily, some B&M don't ship so always looking for that different smoke

You may want to consider putting the participants in order geographically.  If the package follows a loose path around the US, it moves faster, and keeps postage costs down for the participants.

Your seed list is very good, nice job, but it also should include the country of mfg and size
example: Alex Bradley Prensado (HON 6.25 X 52) ($8)
Now that might not be the cigar in the pass but only meant as an example

Also if the vitola is part of the name or it has its own name that should be also included,  Like for the AB you have, if it is a TAA release, or has a year associated with it like the Camacho Liberty

I am one who like to look thru the list a few people before me to see what is there for possible takes.  Including as much detail really helps

Your doing great, just a lot to learn.

I've got to applaud Lee for asking questions and following the advice of some veteran Geeks.  Being in your first pass is intimidating enough, but running a pass as a newbie takes real bravery (and a thick skin).   Stay involved as a moderator, don't just sit back and put it on auto pilot (that is a sure recipe for disaster). Find a mentor or two to send private PMs to with questions.  Keep asking those questions and let the brothers guide you, and you should do fine.  :bigthumbs:

Bonus kudos if you send headfirst (Gary) a Pineapple White Owl and challenge him to smoke it.  Remember, to tell him "pictures or it didn't happen!"  He would be a real pvssy if he declined.

Bruce
Thanks for the feedback.  I'm more of a "hop in and learn as I go" rather than sit and study for a long time.  Like any approach - it has its pros and cons!!

I wasn't a cigar smoker until January of this year.  I did some intensive work for PTSD and some of the other guys in the program were cigar smokers.  Many evenings after long grueling days of dealing with all our past trauma we would hang around the firepit and they got me into smoking cigars.  I quickly fell in love and have been learning ever sense.

I'm in a phase of try a bunch of stuff, really develop my palette, and learn learn learn.  I really appreciate this site, the forums, and the chance to interact with and learn from others.

I appreciate any and all feedback/suggestions - as long as they come from a place of helpful and not criticizing!

Thanks for "taking me under your wing" - all of you!

I'll bite as well if you're still looking for another! I can't just let all these jokers take up all the pass positions without getting involved!!! You'd just need to stick me in at least 1/3 way down the list due to my being out of the country for two more weeks. Passes seem to all happen when I'm traveling... If you're already rolling, no worries and I'll hop an one at a later time.

Cheers!

Puts and takes are submitted.  Not much, but I hope they are okay.  I should be able to get her in the mail to Mr. Caven today.  I'll transition it and post a tracking number when I do.

And Lee, another little something I've learned.  While the USPS' flat rate boxes are convenient, a lot of the time you can actually save money by using your own box, depending on the weight and distance.

Justin do you have a tracking # so I'll know when to go to the post office

Brian - This is incredibly frustrating... I've had a few things that haven't posted to the site after I'd clicked submit... (not a site issue, I believe it was my old phone not sending the complete message I had input). I actually replied to your message yesterday, but it doesn't look to have posted (I'll just have to double check to ensure posting). Anyways, I'm looking for the receipt with the tracking info, I'll let you know if/when I find it. It was sent priority and we're not all that far apart so I'd say for sure by Friday w/out having the tracking # present. Sorry for the issues on tracking...

Had to upgrade to a bigger tupperdor. The box is slightly large, hopefully you have a different one Brian. I'll transition and put in tracking after I drop it off tomorrow. I would guess it'll hit Indiana by Tuesday/Wednesday

Received yesterday and everything looked good, especially the Beer Bomb Brian (Ninfiction) snuck into the box for me!  I switched out the box, added a couple of bags and put the packing peanuts into a ziplock.  Everything is packaged up nicely and heading out the door in about 10 minutes.  Thanks for having me!

Couldn't just fill the box full of peanuts, figured since we talked beer the other night I might as well fill the space productively.

I know I am not part of this pass but it seems a few members here should have remembered this little piece of Cigar Pass Etiquette

Try and put in cigars of at least equal value as you take. Don’t just go by price. Three $4 cigars do not equal one $12 cigar. When you make that kind of substitution, all you have done is diluted the quality of the pass and added more shipping weight.

Diluting a pass is a serious no no.  As was mentioned, you both screw the pass leader out of quality cigars and add weight to the package. This beast cost $18 to ship back.    I am sure that Lee would have appreciated fewer, but nicer cigars, and I would have appreciated lower shipping costs.

Been biting my tongue on this one till the pass was over.  First of all congrats to Lee on completing his first pass a moderator.
But a few times this pass was diluted.  I am sure Lee didn't want to set a tone and challenge more pass experienced Geeks.  Maybe as one of the FOGs on this site I should have said something but I wasn't part of the pass and didn't feel I should step on  the moderator's toes

Pass was at the house when I got back from a work trip.  Thanks all......this was a great learning experience.  And...you guys are right.  This is my first pass so I wanted to soak up the opportunity to learn.  With that I really didn't feel in a position to offer much opinion on the puts and takes that were happening along the way.  I agree with the idea that I match what I give with what I have taken - but - in the spirit of learning and getting my feet wet I didn't want to be to vocal or strong about mismatches.

You know you can learn lots from others....both on what TO do and what NOT TO do.  As this pass went thru other's hands and I looked at each person's own approach to puts/takes I have learned lots.  I'm thankful to you all for giving me both good and not so good examples.

Looking forward to another one.
Lee

As a new member, you took the right approach on this to make it a successful pass, Lee.  Challenging established senior members of any forum never ends well, even when they are wrong and you are right.   I'm not sure that many of us would be able to be as passive when members watered down the Pass.  But now its complete and you have certainly earned your street credibility and a good reputation.  This is the point where you are expected to leave each member feedback on their profile about their participation and performance in the Pass, and they are expected to leave you feedback on your performance as a Pass Moderator.

Lee, you did the right thing taking the high road, even comments made with the best of intentions can be misconstrued and taken the wrong way
