Kent, you should write a Geeks article on how not to conduct a pass here. This is a great case study in how messed up things can get.
The thread from 15-16 was an entertaining read for sure. If you notice, we had the two parties as participants in that pass that are/were involved in this one.
Really a great learning experience. Someone made a reference to passes of the past that were worse...how much worse does it get?
Honestly this is why other "less relaxed" forums have strict guidelines for who can run passes and even be in them.
Given that CG is already equipped with feedback and the badge system. A "pass eligible" and "pass runner" badge wouldn't hurt imo.

Feedback needs to be left to warn other pass starters about this behavior as well. There is still time to explain himself and try and make right, but logging on and not answering to the situation does not bode well. It would be easy to fess up, say oops I f&*&#$d up, let me send a few sticks to the mod or further down the pass and I will make this good. Nobody would ever have a problem letting him in again. But to avoid the situation just looks like you are playing on the good will of the geeks, not cool.
I found my error and I'm working on making it right with the mod.
Quick explanation to those who are so ready to condemn me...I meant to Put 5 and Take 4, but I kept 5 and the most expensive one in my Takes (the Padron) was kept by accident. I was rushing to get the box off since the last time I was blamed for the whole thing going awry when I had no idea the UPPS would want the keys to my car and my first born to ship cigars to Canada. The value of these sticks, if I hadn't messed up, would have been about equal. I have offered to send $$$ to the next guy to "buy" sticks out of his stash, or a B&M for that matter, to more than make up for the difference.
You won't have to worry about my being in another pass, I'm not I your league as far as knowledge or holdings. To those who expressed a willingness to give me the forum to explain, thank you.
I appreciate that you didn't just run and hide from the mistake.

Because I received a cigar as a gift it has no value in a pass? I got a $7.00 stick for $2 or $3, it's pass value is not $7.00?

For your questions, if a cigar was received as a gift we generally use CI or Famous pricing. I think the issue lies with sticks such as Gurkha and Varina Farms. While they have an MSRP on those sites, they are generally inflated just to show a large discount. So in general, we do not consider a $10 MSRP Gurkha a $10 stick in a pass, in fact we generally would ask not to put sticks such as that in a pass.
If you are new to passes, it is easy to make a mistake, so the first thing to do is run puts and takes by the moderator. If they are OK with it, then it is a go. But in private, it is easy to explain why a stick may not fit in a pass, instead of running into larger problems like this. Once you have a feel, you know the ones that are not generally wanted in a pass so you avoid them.
For me, passes are not just about what I get from them, it's just a fun way to interact with the geek community. Most of us shoot to put more than we take and we get a couple sticks we may not have or have wanted to try. Don't get to upset with people questioning you, just answer them. If it is screwed, make it right. If you and the mod are cool, then we are all cool. Just a little communication goes a long way. Hope this helps.

Gurkhas are notorious for MSRP over hype. You don't see the Crest XO on the sites like CI or Famous. Cigar Place shows an MSRP of $535 for a box of 20. But the discount 83% so it sells for $4

Pass etiquette can and has been a struggle on occasion and there are articles on passes here on the CG site. I normally do not get involved in a discrepancy when not a member of the pass, but for future reference, if there are puts/takes that are in question it is best to go PM to the moderator prior to shipping so that it is not an issue. Some cigars are no longer available or rare and harder to determine actual value. Others ie Gurkha may have a high msrp but sell at dogrocket prices.
I am glad to see that this one is being resolved between parties to remedy the situation.
I am a bit confused as to why the admins are considering guidelines on pass participants as the moderator at present has the responsibility to maintain order in their pass IMO.

Hey guys.....Just FYI........I talked with Brian via phone Friday Morning. He and I agreed to a plan to fix it, so take my word - when the sticks hit transit again by Tuesday - all will be as it should be. Basically, I will make it right since it's in my hands now. Larry - don't worry about sending sticks or money as it would be to much of a hassle to try and time it out to catch up with the pass. I told Brian that I would go ahead and process this out and not wait on money or sticks since I did not want others to have to wait on account of this "Hiccup". If you want to do something with Brian - then that's up to you two to work out. I got you covered on this one. I'm basically going to pull the 2 sticks in question and replace with something more inline with what was expected - along with some geek math applied.
This is just my humble $.02 worth - we all make flubs and mistakes. What Michael said was spot on. But here's something he didn't say - that rings true. The guys on here are stand up dudes - I'm still relatively new to the site and several of these guys have been great mentors. I've blow up several inboxes, emails, PM's and phones over the last 4 months. All these folks are here to help and they have all answered me back quickly. I say this because you posted your knowledge was not up to theirs. THEY will share with you and help you if you ask - or stay active in the threads and read over things on the site. I promise you this is not intended to sound like preaching - but I want you to rest assured that the "old guards" on here have forgotten more about cigars than you or I will probably ever learn - but they will all share their advice, knowledge and friendship - if you ask.

Thomas, glad to see that you are asking up front. You have some nice puts, but the Davidoff Limited Edition 2015 Year of the Sheep is a $35 cigar, and the Opus X 20 Years Celebration Power of the Dream is a $31-33 cigar. You should put 2 cigars in with at least the same value. Putting in 3 or 4 cigar that equate to $65 is still "watering the pass", no matter how nice they are.

Prior to taking cigars from the pass, you'll need to compare the physical contents of the pass to the Cigar Pass System's listing. It is important that you notify the moderator of any inconsistencies before executing your turn or transitioning the pass to the next participant.
Please limit your takes to no more than 6 cigars. Also, please stay within your league with the takes so the pass does not get diluted. No taking one $10 stick and putting in three $4 sticks.
This is spelled out pretty clearly in the rules of the pass which should have been read prior to joining the pass.

If the container is a 16 cup Sterilite, can't remember if it's blue or red, that was the one I put in there to start. It's like a $3 container, don't worry about sending it back. Consider it a swap for whatever you're going to use for the pass.
And thanks for repacking and reassessing your P&Ts
For what it's worth, here is my opinion on some of goings-on in this pass and in general:
1) It is up to the pass moderator to screen participants, run the pass, handle puts/takes issues, field questions, etc. You can ask the participants to run all takes/puts by you before shipping, you can put newer participants first in the order, and you can institute other requirements to protect the pass. As a moderator, you ALWAYS run a risk of something going wrong in the pass, but that risk is usually outweighed by the generosity of the participants. At the end, it is also great if the moderator left feedback so that future mods can get an idea of who wants to join their passes. We are all adults, and I don't think it is necessary to institute stricter guidelines, participant requirements, or badges.
2) We are a self-policing community, which has its pros and cons. IMHO, there is a right and wrong way to call people out for mistakes with their takes/puts. Calling them out openly on the forum is not the best option; it is embarrassing and automatically puts them on the defensive. In my experience, I've been able to resolve all but a couple of issues privately with a PM. We all want to protect each other from being taken advantage of, but if we set a negative tone in passes (and really in any thread), newer members are not going to want to participate. I've been on enough toxic forums where the tone is unwelcoming and unforgiving, and those forums struggle and eventually die out.
3) There are incidents, from time-to-time, where grievances need to be aired for the entire community. Some people choose to react negatively to cordial PMs or suggestions, think nothing is wrong, and lash out at the vets and people that are trying to help. These people tend to be narcissistic and we don't want them as part of our community. In those cases, pile on. :biggrin:

By the way, the above wasn't directed at Brian or anyone in particular. Just some general observations.
Have to agree as a general rule with Nathan, moderators need to moderate their pass with a slight variance......
If you are new to CG and you have any doubt of your puts/takes before you submit or send the pass on, you are wise in getting the nod from the moderator to save any grief after the fact. Taking an Opus and putting a Gurkha will throw Curmudgeons into a "get off my lawn" post frenzy. The other is sitting on a pass for a week, then doing poor puts/takes.

Full disclosure here. tfkirk has handled this very well in my opinion. He asked before he just did his thing. I did ask a couple guys about the Cohiba's he proposed because I don't buy them and they can be expensive. I had also pm'd Kirk in the meantime, but was out of town all weekend so his post had been here for a bit.
He did shoot me a pm with new takes and puts which I think are very fair.
I think he kind of got caught in the s**tstorm from previous activity even though he was attempting to get input.
so...I do think it is good we all watch out for the passes, it certainly isn't fair to the guys at the end if the pass is picked over. I did inquire about second opinions, and I'm a softy and might not go after guys as much as I should if they are taking too long or the P&Ts are questionable...anyway, perfect storm apparently.
Brian if your good then nobody should have any issues. Kirk did the right thing, should be in the Geek dictionary under what to do in a pass if you not sure

Got the box yesterday. Updated my puts and takes. Added 2 more boveda packs. Packed her back up and it will be on the road tomorrow. Headed to CT

I always forget to hit confirm after i hit transition now. I just realized i did it again. I put the tracking number in the first time then threw away the receipt. So now i dont have the tracking number.
looking at my potential puts/takes...does a 2007 or 2005 Camacho Liberty without coffin = Davidoff Limited Edition 2015 Year of the Sheep? Obviously can't use a store comparison.

This is certainly a decision to made by the moderator, but IMO the 2005 is a good trade considering its extreme rarity and the fact that many people (including myself) consider it the best Liberty ever made. The 2007 is a great cigar, but many of them showed up without coffins in alternate packaging, and not as rare or an even trade. But again, not my pass and it should be up to Brian.

I've attempted to contact Chris here, via email and on Facebook with no reply. At this point I just hope he's alright...if he is I hope he enjoys the cigars, they were good ones.
Not much else I can do short of flying to Connecticut and chasing him down. Sucks that everyone didn't get their turns but it would suck more if something very serious happened to Chris and that's what prevented the pass from continuing. I like to believe he wouldn't have just kept the box on purpose, but that is a possibility.

My "runner" picture was only meant in good fun. We've interacted with Chris for years here, and he doesn't strike me (or others that I've talked to) as a pass-stealer. Something has come up in his life where he has fallen off the grid. His last FB activity was the same time that he posted his P/Ts here. I just hope that he and/or his family is OK. Cigars can be replaced.
I'm not in this pass, but would be happy to send a fiver to help you start this back up since you were only half way through it.
